4 Vocabulary Directions: First, read the sentence and try to figure out the meaning of each word in context. Then use your dictionary to find the meaning, synonyms, and parts of speech. Underline the context clues that helped you determine the meaning of each word. You may work in your journal. 1) Derision: Through the open door came the thuds and occasional clangs of a horseshoe game, and now and then the sound of voices raised in approval or derision. 2) Sarcastically: Whit said sarcastically, He spends half his time lookin for her, and the rest of the time she s lookin for him. 3) Reverently: This thing they had never really believed in was coming true. George said reverently, J**** C*****! I bet we could swing her.
5 4) Bemused: They all sat still, all bemused by the beauty of the thing, each mind was popped into the future when this lovely thing should come about. 5) Aloof This room was swept and fairly neat, for Crooks was a proud, aloof man. He kept his distance and demanded that other people keep theirs. 6) Wryly: Slim smiled wryly. He knelt down beside Curley. I think you got your han caught in a machine. If you don t tell nobody what happened, we ain t going to. 7) Fawning: Lennie gulped and his smile grew more fawning. I ain t doing nothing, he said. Just come to look at my puppy.
6 John Steinbeck on the Writing Process The basic rule you gave us was simple and heartbreaking. A story to be effective had to convey something from writer to reader and the power of its offering was the measure of its excellence. Outside of that, you said, there were no rules. A story could be about anything and could use any means and technique at all so long as it was effective If there is a magic in story writing, and I am convinced that there is, no one has ever been able to reduce it to a recipe that can be passed from one person to another. The formula seems to lie solely in the aching urge of the writer to convey something he feels important to the reader. If the writer has that urge, he may sometimes but by no means always find the way to do it It is not so very hard to judge a story after it is written, but after many years, to start a story still scares me to death. I will go so far as to say that the writer who is not scared is happily unaware of the remote and tantalizing majesty of the medium. (
