3 Surface Energy and Adhesion A major distinguishing feature between adhesive families is surface energy adhesion. Typically measured by dynes per centimeter, surface energy measures the attraction between unlike. The dyne level is the actual measure of the surface tension. On a high energy surface substrate an adhesive flows providing a better bond. On a low surface energy substrate an adhesive will bead up and not flow out. A good example of this is visualizing how water contacts an un-waxed car vs waxed car. Water droplets spread out on an un-waxed or high surface energy surface and bead up on the waxed or low surface energy surface. 5 Once the proper adhesive family is selected, an adhesive s format should be considered next. Some popular formats include: 3M Adhesive Transfer Tapes Transfer Tapes are essentially glue on a liner. They are generally between 1-5 mils and are very conformable making them ideal for high speed part processing. 3M Single Coated Tapes Single Coated Tapes consist of adhesive applied to one side of a backing. These tapes are usually 2-5 mils of adhesive and rest on backings that are 1-10 mils thick. The choice of backing is important since it typically affects how the tape will withstand its application environment. 3M Double Coated Tapes Double Coated Tapes consist of pressure-sensitive adhesive on both sides of a carrier. They also help to absorb shock and distribute stress over the bonded surface 3M Medical Specialty Tapes Medical Tapes are often designed for stick-to-skin applications. 3M Performance Label Materials Label Materials consist of an adhesive coated liner and facestock. A topcoat may also be added to the facestock to aid in print receptivity. Labels are available in permanent, repositionable, removable and semi-permanent adhesive families. 3M VHB Tapes VHB tapes are made up of closed cell foam and solid acrylic adhesives that are highly viscoelastic meaning that they both absorb and disperse energy. They are extremely durable tapes that withstand harsh environments. 3M Commercial Graphics Graphic printable films designed for the visual communications industry. 3M Membrane Switch Spacers Membrane Switch Spacers are double coated tapes designed to bond and provide circuit separation in a membrane switch spacer. 3M Reclosable Fasteners Reclosable Fasteners are used in applications requiring multiple opening and closures and are available with or without adhesive. 3M Protective Tapes Protective tapes or mask, are designed to protect various during manufacturing, assembly, shipping and delivery.
