1 Reading Checklist 1. Demonstrates competence in the general skills and strategies of the reading process (680.01) A. Uses decoding strategies to fluently read grade-level material demonstrates phonemic awareness identifies words within a sentence distinguishes syllables within words recognizes and generates rhyming words imitates sounds and discriminates between two sounds isolates initial and final sounds in a word blends phonemes into words segments and manipulates phonemes within and between words uses basic elements of phonetic and structural analysis to decode unknown words recognizes vowel letters in words identifies letters and their sounds within the context of a given blends letter sounds into words identifies familiar word parts (e.g., er, ing, an, ar) applies familiar letter patterns when decoding a new word substitutes and matches individual sounds within and between words recognizes and reads words with silent letters (final e, adjacent vowels) uses knowledge of common prefixes, suffixes, and root words to gain meaning uses self-correction strategies recognizes miscues based on context searches pictures for cues rereads to confirm corrections B.
