1 Application note ST200 VLIW series Using the ST200 tools on the ST231-EVAL board Synopsis This document describes how the ST200 Micro Toolset can be used to compile ST200 applications and execute them on an ST231-EVAL board (mb424), over an Ethernet connection. Note: Most of the information provided here also applies to the STI5100-Mboard (mb390), fitted with an STx5300 chip. In this case, for all instructions within this document that refer to mb424 replace mb424 with mb390. 3 ST200 Prerequisites 1 Prerequisites There are several prerequisites that must be fulfilled before using the toolset. Access to an ST231-EVAL board (based on the STx5300 chip). One ST Micro Connect box must be installed and connected to the debug port of the board. For the ST231-EVAL board, remove the hood from the board and connect the target cable to the connector marked as jtag. Be careful to fit pin 1 of the target connector on the ST Micro Connect to pin 1 of the JTAG connector on the board (CN2). The ST Micro Connect box must be correctly setup and connected the the host machine through Ethernet. Refer to the documentation provided in the ST Micro Connect component. Table 1 summarizes the system components. Table 1. STMicroelectronics ST20-Connect (1) /Win, ST20-Connect/Sun ST20-Connect/Lnx ST200 Micro tools Embedded core development tools whose part number depends upon the operating system and development platform being used (for example, PC or Sun Solaris and Windows, Unix or Linux). STMicroelectronics ST200-Toolset Target board Target board. STMicroelectronics ST231-EVAL 1. Either the ST20 or the ST40 version of ST Micro Connect is compatible for use with the ST200 Micro Toolset /8
4 How to compile applications ST200 2 How to compile applications 2.1 ST231 architecture selection By default the toolset compiles the application for the ST220 core architecture. The STx5300 chip contains an ST231 core, so the following st200cc option must be specified: -mcore=st STx5300 chip selection Note: By default, the toolset compiler is not aware of peripheral control registers specific to the STx5300 chip. Specify the following st200cc option to enable the application to access relevant information in these control registers: -msoc=sti5300 This option is essential for the correct execution of any application built in OS21 run-time mode or for bare mode applications that utilizes time features. 2.3 ST231-EVAL board (mb424) selection Predefined memory configuration The toolset is provided with a default setting for using the whole LMI memory of the ST231- EVAL board as shown in Table 2. Table 2. LMI memory Target name Address Size mb424 0xC M The application must be linked with a specific st200cc option to match the predefined mb424 target name: -mboard=mb Customized memory configuration By default, the toolset compiles the application to be loaded at DEFAULT_TEXT_BASE (where the.text section of the program is set at link time) and the st200run and st200gdb debugger tools initialize the RAMEND (where the stack is initialized) at DEFAULT_RAMEND, as described in the ST200 Cross Development Manual (ADCS ). Both DEFAULT_TEXT_BASE and DEFAULT_RAMEND are defined at compile time in: <tools-dir>/target/board/<target name>/board.ld All the information related to the memory space usage of each target is encoded in the <tools-dir>/target/board/<target name>/board.ld files of each <target name> such as mb421_host. 4/
5 ST200 How to compile applications New <target name> directories may be created under <tools-dir>/target/board in order to better fit the requirement of the application for using the memory space for this board. This is taken into account by specifying the -mboard=<target name> option when using st200cc, and by specifying the BOARD <target name> option in the definition of the connection alias in the targets.cfg file when using st200run or st200gdb. 2.4 Example Compile a hello world hello.c program for this board: st200cc -mboard=mb424 -msoc=sti5300 -mcore=st231 -o hello.out hello.c -g /8
6 How to connect to the board ST200 3 How to connect to the board The application can be executed on the ST231-EVAL board using either the st200gdb debugger tool or the st200run tool. Both tools require the target board to be predefined in the targets.cfg file as follows: mb424 st200emu HTI_ID tcp:<ip address> BOARD mb424 NO_TAP_CTRL CPU_RESET_ADDRESS=0x7FFFFF00 where the <IP address> is the Ethernet IP address that has been configured for the ST Micro Connect adaptor. 3.1 Example Execute the hello world program: st200run -t mb424 hello.out Launch a debug session in command line mode on the hello world program: st200gdb -nw hello.out target gdi -t mb424 load b main run 6/
