1 COLLEGIO IPASVI DI ROMA 3 rd International Conference The Commitment of Nurses to Patient Safety: a Therapeutic Alliance Congress venue: Jolly Hotel Midas Via Aurelia, Roma (RM) ITALY Aprile 2008 Objectives Nowadays, patient safety is an important issue that involves various health sectors and has a strong social impact especially within hospitals. The relevance of this subject, which is part of the more comprehensive theme of quality, is proved and highlighted by a wide range of statistical data that in the last few years have been the object of discussion on healthcare issues and caused sensation for the great number of errors and adverse events. In the United States, medical errors are the 8 th main cause of death. The estimated direct and indirect costs for avoidable adverse events range between 17 and 37 billion dollars a year. Some of the most interesting strategies to enhance patient safety are: - passing from a punitive and repressive system towards those who commit errors to a non-punitive system that encourages spontaneous reporting of errors; - creating a culture of safety based on prevention and prediction of probable errors; - setting up a system that would systematically detect and correct risky situations that may lead to an error or harm. From this viewpoint, the 3 rd International Conference: The Commitment of Nurses to Patient Safety: a Therapeutic Alliance, represents an occasion to build a common pathway for the safety of the public on a national an international level. This objective can be achieved only through the exchange of experiences between the various interested parties working together and where nurses are on the frontline in ensuring patient safety. In fact, only an integrated management of the risks with the committed participation of all the interested parties will bring about change in critical practise, in order to promote a culture of health that pays more attention to the patient and to the health workers.
