Nurse Computer Literacy and EMR Implementations Julie Jacobs, RN, MS EMR Specialist
Introduction Julie Jacobs, Stillwater MN RN-College of St. Catherine 1994 MS-Metropolitan State University 2009 Technology University of California, Los Angeles Began to study RN behavior 2005 Initial study in on Computer Literacy in Nurses
Learning Objectives Describe the issues surrounding the implementation of an EMR in a health care setting in the context of this Research project Identify the issues and barriers faced by Nurses in a health care setting during an EMR implementation Implement strategies to increase Nurse compliance with EMR processes Obtain Resources for enhancement of Nurse Computer Literacy during an EMR implementation
Describe the issues EMR- Skill Sets needed for successful EMR implementation Historical Data: Experiences/Good &Bad Knowledgeable Administrators, Or Not Rapid pace of Change today Research Context
Identify the barriers Nurse Barriers Research Data Time Constraints-There are patients in the Waiting Room ER Etc. Familiarity with Paper Charts/Complex processes that were hard won Fears/Concerns about Patient Safety with an EMR Predisposition toward Technology in general Low touch vs. High touch Lack of Formal Training/First User level with computers
Data Analysis (N=10) Survey Question Strongly Agree- % I am expecting the MOSAIQ 1.6 electronic medical 50% record to be easy to use. Computers in general are no problem for me. 50% I believe that an electronic medical record is an efficient 60% way to capture the encounters we have with our patients. I believe that an electronic medical record increases 40% patient safety. Information is more readily available to Doctors, Nurses, 60% and others who interact with patient s charts and treatments at Cancer Care once the electronic medical record is implemented. Overall, I have little or no concerns about the 10% implementation of the electronic medical record at Cancer Care this year.
Gap Analysis (N=10) Survey Question Extremely Important-% Gap + or - Ease of use of MOSAIQ 1.6 Ease of computer use in general Efficiency of information capture 90% 0=6-1=3-2=1 70% 0=4-1=1-2=2-3=2 +1=1 80% 0=4-1=4 +1=2 Effect on patient safety 90% 0=3-1=4-2=2 +1=1 Availability of information from the medical record Concerns regarding Implementation overall 100% 0=6-1=3-2=1 80% 0=2-1=1-2=4-3=3
Implement the strategy Strategies to increase compliance: Training approaches Need for assurance Culture of safety
