2 Getting Started & Notice HDD1 USB 3.0 esata HDD2 HDD3 HDD4 This 4 bay external enclosure comes with end-user oriented design for intuitive operation. Connecting this device using USB or esata cable, 4 HDDs are detected and operate separately. Important! - Connecting USB & esata simultaneously is NOT possible! Choose only USB or esata interface (cable) to make connection. - SATA-II interface hosts SATA I, II, III HDD(s) - 4 HDDs work individually, Plug & Play, and Hot swappable - HDD capacity support over 4TB is possible by GPT mode under W8/W7/Vista, Linux, MAC - Windows XP can t support 3TB HDD(s) or larger. - USB 3.0 connection and backward compatible to USB 2.0 Notice: 1. This product operates between 0 o C to 40 o C with a relative humidity between 0 to 80 %. Be sure this device works under a well ventilated environment. 2. Do not block ventilation holes of this device in order to retain the best heat dissipation. 3. Do not place any liquids or chemical hazards near the product. 4. HDDs must be well secured and fixed to the HDD-tray before they are installed to the external enclosure. Refer to Hard Drive installation guide for details. 1

7 Hard Drive Installation Guide Step1: Pull out the HDD tray. Step2: Mount the HDD on the trays. The HDD tray is designed to fit both 2.5 and 3.5 HDDs. 2.5 HDD 3.5 HDD 6

8 Step3: Using screw driver and screws to fasten the HDD on the tray. Fasten 2.5 HDD on the tray with 3 screws. Fasten 3.5 HDD on the tray with 4 screws. 7

10 Hard Drive Formatting Guide on Windows Partition a volume A volume must be partitioned before you may begin using the drives under the operating system. The following sections describe procedures required to partition a volume. Note : - Follow the step-by-step instructions below to complete the HDD partitioning and formatting. - Each HDD has to be partitioned and formatted respectively. 1. Right-click the Computer icon and select Manage from the pop-up window. From the Computer Management window select Disk Management under Storage to start formatting. 9

11 2. Right-click Unallocated and select New Simple Volume. If a New Simple Volume option is not available, initialize the disk first. To initialize a disk, please check Initialize a Disk at next section for guidance. Note: In Win XP, you will probably find New Partition instead of New Simple Volume. It s basically the same idea, those two terms are often used interchangeably. 3. Click Next to start the New Simple Volume Wizard. 10

12 4. Specify the partition size. By default the partition occupies the entire volume. Click Next. 5. Assign a drive letter and click Next. 11

13 6. Name, format the partition, and click Next. 7. Review the file system settings and click Finish to create the logical partition. 12

14 Initialize a Disk If a New Simple Volume option is not available while right-clicking the Unallocated box, look to the left of the Unallocated box. You most likely would see HDD(s) Not Initialized. Initialize the HDD(s) and make sure you see Online before proceeding to HDD formatting/partitioning. 1. Right-click the Not Initialized block to observe below drop window. 13

15 2. Select Initialize Disk. 3. You will find a pop-up window below, Win 7 provides options for MBR or GPT. It is recommended selecting MBR if the HDD capacity does not exceed 2TB. On the other hand, GPT is recommended if HDD capacity is over 2TB. 14

16 4. Online message will replace Not Initialized message when disk is initialized and ready for disk partitioning and formatting. 15

17 Hard Drive Formatting Guide on Linux Partition a volume under Linux Ubuntu A volume must be partitioned before you may begin using the drives under the operating system. The following sections describe procedures required to partition a volume. Note : - Follow the step-by-step instructions below to complete the HDD partitioning and formatting. - Each HDD has to be partitioned and formatted respectively. 1. Click the Disk Utility on the Desktop 16

18 2. You can find the hard disks under Peripheral Devices, choose the hard drive that you want to format, then select Format Drive 3. Select GUID Partition Table if the capacity for your hard disk is over than 2TB. Select Master Boot Record if your hard disk capacity is under 2TB. 17

19 4. Select Create Partition, then you can decide the size for each partition by sliding the bar to left or to right. 5. Select File Type. Please be noted the message below the Type column. If it says this file system is compatible with Linux system only. Then this hard disk can t be recognized by Windows or other OS system. 18

20 6. Press Create for creating a new partition 7. The new partition is being created and you will find New Volume after finishing the creating process. 19

21 8. Once you see New Volume, select Mount Volume. 9. Select Mount Point to access into the folder. 20

The following sections describe procedures required to partition a volume. Note : - Follow the step-by-step instructions below to complete the HDD partitioning and formatting. - Each HDD has to be partitioned and formatted respectively. 1. Right click the Go icon and select Utilities from the pop-up window. 21

23 2. Select Disk Utility 3. Select Partition on the top of the window, and then select 1 partition from the Partition Layout. Note: 1partition is only a suggestion since Mac OS doesn t need to update the software very often. 22

24 4. Select Options at the bottom of the window 5. Please select GUID Partition Table. Currently, most of the Mac computers are Intel based, so if you d like to make the hard drive works normally or use it as an system drive, please make sure you select GUID Partition Table. Note: For PPC Mac, please select Apple Partition Map 23

25 6. Select Apply to finish formatting a hard drive 24

26 Power Synchronization This external enclosure can detect the status of PC and turn on & off itself automatically. a. PC power off PC Power off Power LED on, HDDs off, 4HDD LEDs off b. PC hibernates(sleep mode) Note: in some OS, when system reaches sleep mode, only monitor and peripheral turned off while motherboard power on. In this case, HDD and LED will be still on. PC Hibernates Power LED on, HDDs off, 4HDD LEDs off Note: to enhance power synchronization feature, do not turn off the main power of this product 25

27 Note About HDD Capacity Support Installing HDD(s) over 2TB is possible. However, make sure to run this device under Vista, Win7, Linux and Mac OS and activate GPT(GUID Partition Table) mode when formatting this device to have it work correctly. About USB & esata Connectivity The equipped USB3.0 port is backward compatible with USB2.0 PC/notebook by simply plug and play. esata (SATA-II, 3Gbps) is designed to support plug and play and hot swapping. Connecting USB & esata simultaneously is not available. Don t connect multiple cables, choosing only one (USB, esata) to perform your work. 26
