WALL-HANGER SEWING PROJECT Light-houses EWV001 5 x5 /5 x7 Hoops and Country Cottages EWC009 5 x7 Hoop for the embroidery designs Materials: Fabric: Poly-cotton in white and in print of choice Embroidery Thread: Blue/Red Thin Batting and Cut-Away Stabilizer Fabric Temporary Spray Adhesive Print-out of the designs to be used for the Wall-Hanging. The designs will be used for Placement to make the Wall-hanging. Air Erasable Pen
I made 2 Wall-hangings: 1. wall-hanging using EWV001 - Light-houses and 2. EWC009 - Country Cottages This How To is for both. This is not an In-The-Hoop Project. The Light-houses and Country Cottages are done in line-work (Blue and Red) for best effect and look really attractive as Wall-hangings. I matched the fabric to the thread colour. This How-To will show you how to make the Wall-hanging and how to place the designs on the wall-hanger using the placement method. Firstly do print-outs of your designs. Cut carefully around them. You will have a Header e.g. Light-houses or Country Cottages. 6 Designs of either Light-houses or 6 Country Cottages. A Footer e.g. a Rope or Floral Heart Border Fabric: 2 pieces of white Poly-Cotton measuring:50 long x 11 wide Thin Batting as above. Printed Fabric: 2 long side pieces measuring: 45 x 8.5 wide. 2 pieces for the point at the bottom measuring: a: 14 x 8.5 wide b: 16 x 8.5 wide 1 piece to go across the top measuring: 16 x 8.5 wide Prepare your white fabric for embroidery: Make print-outs of all your designs and cut carefully round each one. This will give accurate placing. Fold your white fabric lengthwise and mark the centre down the length with an Air Soluble Pen.
Now place Print-out of the Header on the pen line matching it to the vertical line on the print-out. Using your pen mark each side of the print-out onto the fabric.
Take the pen and using a pin mark the centre of the design onto the fabric. Remove the print-out. Mark a 1 spacing and place the first house design (print-out) of your choice in place. Mark the 4 sides on the fabric and the centre of the design using a pin as before. Keep going in this way leaving 1 between each design. The last piece will be the Footer. Your fabric will have placement markings all the way down. Remember to number each picture and keep in order to match the placement.
Now for stitching the designs: Hoop up using the 5 x7 hoop and Cut-Away Stabilizer. Hoop up your fabric at the same time. Start at the top. Fold up the excess fabric and pin. Place the hoop in the machine. Match the needle over the centre of the design. Stitch out the 1st design. When done remove the fabric from the hoop. Cut away the excess stabilizer. Re-hoop with stabilizer and your fabric. Align your fabric. Go to the placement for the 2nd design. Centre the needle. Stitch out the 2nd design. Do all the designs in this way. If necessary, rinse your wall-hanging at this stage to remove any pen markings and dry. Press. Then carry on with the batting and backing as follows: When all the designs are done take the batting and the other piece of white fabric and spray to the underside of the embroidered strip. The spray glue will hold it in place. With your hands gently press the 3 pieces together. Now for the border. Take on long side length, fold in half length lengthways right-side facing you.
Press. Place this strip on top of the embroidery, raw edges matching. Stitch down the length.
Fold the printed fabric to the underside of the wall-hanging. Match the folded edge of the printed fabric to the stitching. Pin in place enclosing the raw edges. Do the same to the other long side. Using a decorative stitch on your sewing-machine, stitch both sides in place. Cut a V at the bottom of the wall-hanger. Mine is 6 in height.
Now for the V. Using the shorter piece, fold in half and press. Place on top of the V and stitch in place. Make sure the fabric and stitching will go completely over the side piece. Trim off the extra side piece sticking out. Now fold the fabric over, press and pin in place. Do the same to the other side.
Fold the corners to the back and hand sew in place. Stitch the decorative stitch along the V. Now for the top border. Fold hems at either end and stitch in place. Fold the fabric in half as before and stitch in place. Fold over to the back, pin and stitch in place using the decorative stitch.
You can now put a rod through the top border, all ready for hanging.
