1 Presentation Objectives To give participants an over view of the medical school admissions process on both a national and state level. To highlight how TOMA and practicing DOs can become effective recruiters for the osteopathic profession and how they can impact the medical admissions process. 2 Purpose of the interview Assess the applicant s suitability for, and more specifically, osteopathic Assess to the best of the interviewer s ability the applicant s problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills Assess the applicant s altruistic nature as it relates to care giving and service activities The applicant should also be given the opportunity to gain information about the curriculum, osteopathic, support services, special insights into the school or any other areas of interest How important is a referral letter Physician referral letters give the admissions committee valuable insight into the candidates motivation and interest in A good letter should: Indicate how the physician knows the candidate How much time the candidate has spent shadowing the physician The physicians assessment of the candidates motivation for and in particular their motivation for osteopathic The physicians assessment of the students suitability for the rigors of medical school, as well as their capability to succeed How important is knowledge of the osteopathic profession Students should present in their applications that they have at least a general understanding of osteopathic Those that are successfully selected for interview will be evaluated on their knowledge of osteopathy The admissions committee will take into consideration the students performance in the interview, as well as a recommendation from a DO when determining a candidates suitability for acceptance 2
