1 Manufacturing Technology Safety Rules Industrial Technology Department Madison High School Madison Local Schools Laboratory Safety Rules 1. Do not enter the shop unless an instructor is present. 2. Eye protection is required at ALL TIMES while shop activities are in progress. All glasses should have your name on them and a neck strap to keep them with you at all times. 3. Coats, jackets and book bags are not permitted in the shop. Hang them in the hallway outside the shop area. No loose, ragged, or baggy clothing. Remove loose jewelry and tie back long hair. 4. Absolutely no horseplay in the shop. 5. Devote all your attention to the machine process you are performing. Do NOT talk or distract operators. 6. Safety lines are for your protection. The operator should be the only one within the safety area. Stay clear of students operating machinery. 7. Tools and materials can be dangerous. Machines are to be used only for projects. You must have a specific purpose in mind before operating a machine. 8. Clean your area when finished with an operation. Excess tools and debris can cause an accident and injury. 9. Always have your instructor s permission before operating a machine. You must be tested on safety and proper procedures on each machine before working on them. 10. Plan your operations before operating a machine. Make all necessary adjustments and double check before turning the power on. 11. Never remove or adjust a safety guard without the instructor checking the setup for safe operation. 12. Use approved clamps and holding devices when necessary. 13. Keep the machine tables and working surfaces clear of tools and stock not necessary for the operation being performed. Hang tools on the tool board when not being used. 14. Maintain the margin of safety specified for the machine. This is the minimum distance your hands may be from the moving parts while the tool is in operation. 15. Gloves should never be worn during machining operations as they may be caught in the machinery. 16. If a machine is dull, out of adjustment, or in some way not working properly, notify the instructor IMMEDIATELY. 17. Never leave a machine running unattended. When you have finished an operation, turn off the machine and wait until it stops, then clean up. 18. Always practice good safety and work habits. Think before you act.

2 Jointer Safety Rules 2. Before turning on the power: a. Ask your instructor to check special set-ups b. Adjust the depth of cut i. Softwood = 1/8 ii. Hardwood = 1/16 c. Make sure the cutting knives are clear of materials 3. Keep the guard over the knives at all times 4. Stand to the left of the machine, never behind it 5. Hold the board firmly against the table and fence 6. Cut with the grain 7. Use a push stick when jointing narrow or flat stock 8. Turn off the jointer and wait for the knives to come to a complete stop before leaving the machine 9. Do not: a. Change the out feed table of the jointer b. Adjust the fence while the jointer is running c. Joint the end grain of aboard less than 12 in width Radial Arm Saw Safety Rules 2. Before turning on the power: a. Visually check the blade for sharpness b. Secure clamps and locking handles c. If the machine is not equipped with an automatic blade return, push the saw back against the stop 3. Keep the guard and the anti-kickback device in position over the saw. 4. Hold material firmly against the fence. 5. For special set ups, ask your teacher for approval 6. Allow the blade to reach full RPM s before cutting 7. Make sure that the saw has come to a complete stop before making adjustments 8. Remember that the saw will pull itself into the wood. Some hard woods may cause the saw to stall 9. If the saw vibrates or coasts away from the post, turn it off and tell your instructor. 10. Do not: a. Place your hands in line with the saw blade b. Cut more than one piece of wood at a time c. Reach over the saw line (cross arm) to pull stock into place d. Pull out the saw after it has been turned off and coasting

3 Table Saw Safety Rules 2. Raise the saw blade above the table no more than necessary to clear the material to be cut 3. Before turning on the power: a. Check the saw blade for cracks, missing teeth and for suitability for the project b. Move the fence and secure it away from the saw line c. Lock the fence in place d. Fasten a clearance block to the fence when cutting duplicate pieces of stock 4. Adjust the fence only when the saw blade has come to a complete stop. 5. Stand a little to the left of the saw line so that any kickback material will not hit you. Make sure others do the same. 6. Keep the safety guard in place at all times unless you have your teachers permission for special operations. 7. Remove the dado head from the arbor after you are finished using it 8. When ripping on the table saw: a. Use a push stick on narrow boards b. Make sure the edge grain of the board next to the rip fence is straight and flat 9. Have instructors approval a. On special set-ups b. To resaw c. To cut angles with the arbor tilted 10. Do not: a. Use a cracked or dull blade b. Begin cutting until the saw has reached full RPMs. c. Place hands or fingers in line with the saw blade. d. Clear scraps of wood that are close to the saw blade with your fingers, use a piece of scrap wood at least 12 long e. Do freehand cutting f. Cut cylindrical stock without a jig g. Rip through loose knots h. Use the rip fence as a stop gauge without a clearance block Sander Safety Rules 2. Before turning on the sander check: a. The operating controls b. The abrasive paper or cloth for rips and tears c. That all safety guards are in place 3. Always saw with the grain 4. Sand dry wood only 5. Avoid heating and burning of the wood by moving the work piece from side to side. 6. Report damaged sanding belts to your teacher 7. Do not: a. Hold small pieces of wood to be sanded in your hand. b. Touch the moving belt c. Sand or shape metal on a sander equipped with a dust collection system

4 Surface Planer Safety Rules 2. Use only clean wood, free of sand, dirt, paint, nails and other materials that may damage the blades 3. Inspect the wood for loose knots, cracks, warp and other defects 4. If the wood becomes stuck, turn off the machine and tell your instructor. 5. Let the planer reach full RPMs before starting to surface plane wood. 6. Avoid pinching your fingers between the edge grain of the face of the board and the planer table. 7. Do not: a. Surface wood that is less than 12 in length b. Take a cut deeper than 1/8 thick for softwood and 1/16 for hardwood c. Look into the planer while it is running d. Reach into the machine while it is running Band Saw Safety Rules 2. Before turning on the power adjust the saw guides as close to the wood as possible without touching 3. Before turning on the power, check the cutting radius to make sure that it is not too small. 4. Make sure the teeth of the band saw are pointing downward 5. Firmly support the wood against the downward thrust of the saw blade 6. Allow the saw to reach full cutting speed before making a cut 7. Turn off the saw and let it come to a complete stop before backing out of a long cut 8. Immediately turn off the band saw and tell your instructor if you hear a rhythmic clicking noise or if the blade breaks. 9. Do not: a. Place your fingers closer than 2 to the running saw blade b. Cross the saw line with your fingers c. Stand to the right of the band saw while it is running d. Cut round stock without the proper holding device e.
