3 PROGRAM EXPERIENCES Admission Criteria 1. GPA of 3.0 overall OR in last 60 hours of coursework OR a Master s degree 2. Applicants must have a major in the discipline they wish to teach. If applicant does not have a major, transcripts will be reviewed and courses equivalent to a major are required. Candidates must complete the content area coursework required before exit from the program. 3. GRE scores of 350 verbal and 350 quantitative OR Miller Analogies Test score of Passing scores on the PRAXIS II exam (s) in certification area. NOTE: After admission to the program, but prior to graduation, candidates will also be required to pass the "Principles of Learning and Teaching" exam of PRAXIS II 5. Submission of a professional resume; professional autobiography; 3 letters of reference documenting relevant life/work/educational experience 6. 4 The Master of Arts in Teaching / secondary certification program is designed for candidates who are preparing to teach in grades The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) is a degree program designed to help individuals holding non-teaching baccalaureate degrees in appropriate fields acquire teacher certification. Prior to admission, candidates entering the program must demonstrate their knowledge of the discipline that they plan to teach. Upon completion of the Master of Arts in Teaching degree, candidates will be able to demonstrate and integrate content knowledge, effective pedagogical skills, dispositions, and technological skills. In addition, candidates will show understanding and appreciation for students and families from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds through course observations, assignments and reflections. The secondary certification MAT program is a 39 hour program that also consists of education and special teaching methods coursework, as well as an action research project and a semester long student-teaching experience. 5 Spanish (P-12) Technology Education (5-12) Theater (8-12) Candidates in the MAT program may choose to complete the entire program as regular full or part-time graduate students or they may choose to seek employment as teachers using temporary provisional certification. Candidates are not required to seek a teaching position using temporary provisional certification. Secondary certification candidates are qualified to become temporary provisionally certified after completing the first semester of the program. The responsibilities for the temporary provisionally certified candidates are the same as any other full-time teacher. They are the teacher of record for their classroom. The candidates are mentored by the MAT program coordinator and a mentor within their school district that is assigned by the school district. The provisionally certified candidates are also observed and advised at least four times by a university student-teaching supervisor. It is during this first year of teaching that candidates complete EGC M.A.T Practicum requirements. After the completion of EGC M.A.T Practicum, provisional certified candidates must complete KTIP (Kentucky Teacher Internship Program) before exiting the program. Candidates who choose to complete the program as regular full or part-time graduate students will complete EGC M.A.T Practicum as a regular student teaching experience under the supervision of a qualified cooperating teacher. Candidates are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA on program coursework. Upon completion of a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, graduates will demonstrate competency in the Kentucky Teacher. After graduation and successful completion of the PRAXIS II Principles of Learning and Teaching exam, graduates who chose to complete the program as regular full or EKU Graduate Program Review Documents: MAT Secondary Page 5

6 part-time students, are certified by the state of Kentucky as Rank II teachers. Provisional certified candidates must also complete KTIP (Kentucky Teacher Internship Program) before exiting the program. The College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences strive to work together to meet individual student needs through effective advising, excellent instruction and regular, supervised field and clinical experiences. In addition, student support services are provided by the College of Education Office of Teacher Admissions and Certification. Curriculum Requirements Curriculum requirements include the following: (1) Education / Pedagogy courses (16 hours); content course (12 hours); research course (3 hours); and practicum student teaching (8 hours) for a total of 39 graduate hours. Candidates attain pedagogical skills and knowledge of Kentucky Core Content topics in their certification area. Field experiences in the MAT program address the areas of discipline-specific pedagogy, leadership, and diversity. Candidates are give opportunities to plan, teach, and assess the work students as well as their own teaching skills. During the first semester of the program, candidates observe (for at least one school day) and interview two teachers in their content area. Candidates must attend a school board or site based decision council meeting. Candidates also complete an extended research activity in which they assess the diversity of their community and the organizations that serve diverse students; they must visit at least one of these organizations. During the methods courses (fall semester) candidates must plan and teach at least one complete lesson and assess both the students work and their own performance. 7 MAT Practicum. MAT candidates either work as a teacher of record using temporary provisional certification or complete a traditional student teaching semester under the supervision of a cooperating teacher. (complete descriptions of these experiences are provided on the Key Assessment Chart) Courses in the MAT program are offered on the Richmond campus in the evening in order to accommodate the needs of non-traditional students. Many of the MAT candidates work full time as temporary provisionally certified teachers or in other full-time jobs within and outside of the field of education. From time to time, courses may be offered in a web-enhanced format (50% online 50% on campus) Several content area courses are offered online. EGC 837, EMG 806 and SED 800 always offered online. Program delivery is evaluated via student evaluation of instruction (IDEA), common assessments and program reviews. Adjunct faculty collaborate with the Department Chair, program coordinators, and lead, full-time faculty to ensure consistent and fair course delivery. Monitoring of Candidate Progress The progress of candidates is monitored by the M.A.T. advisor throughout the program. Candidates progress through four transition points: Admission to EKU Graduate School, (Gate 1) Admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching Program, (Gate 2) Preparation for Admission to Student Teaching, (Gate 3) and Program Completion / Graduation (Gate 4). These transition points insure that candidates have acquired necessary professional and pedagogical content knowledge, skills, and dispositions to progress through the program. Candidates are guided through the process of each transition point during orientations, advising, and mentoring. An electronic planned program document (CARES report) is in the final development stages and should be introduced in Each M.A.T. candidate s progress is monitored through Key Assessments during each of these transition points. These key assessments are reviewed in each candidate s TaskStream e- portfolio. Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to EKU s Graduate School as well as requirements for admission to the M.A.T. program. (See for complete description.) Alignment to After having completed the first semester of coursework - EGC 820 Professional Studies I: Teachers, Schools, and Society and EGC 830 Professional Studies II: Learners, Teachers, and Action Research - candidates have a knowledge base of the EKU Conceptual Framework, the EPSB Kentucky Teacher and Code of Ethics, Kentucky Core Content, KTIP-style lesson planning, unit planning, and assessment. This knowledge base is enhanced and extended as they progress through the program. Candidates have also researched and written an action research proposal. In subsequent courses, the candidate will continue to research her/his topic. During the first year teaching/practicum experience, the candidate will collect data in her/his classroom. The Candidate will analyze the data and write a final research paper for EGC 820/EGC 889 the MAT Capstone seminar. 9 Conceptual Framework The EKU Teacher Education Program s Conceptual Framework is woven throughout the Master of Arts in Teaching program so as to ensure that candidates develop knowledge, skills and appropriate professional dispositions as they progress. Education coursework at EKU helps students to become informed, independent thinkers by developing competencies in communication, quantitative analysis, and critical thinking and by helping them understand and appreciate the diversity of culture, individuals, the natural environment, and the global society. Along with the teacher education core and their emphasis area coursework candidates construct understanding of the complexity and richness of the teaching/learning process. Pedagogical skills are introduced and applied throughout all of the pedagogy/education course in the M.A.T. program. Candidates professional dispositions are assessed multiple times throughout the program not only through self-assessments, but by instructors and cooperating teacher mentors. These dispositions include professional behaviors as well as their demonstration of positive attitudes and beliefs as demonstrated in their behaviors and words. Instructional technology is demonstrated and utilized throughout their programs. In addition, candidates demonstrate their skills with technology through their professional e-portfolio. EKU Teacher Education is committed to an appreciation and value for diversity. The diversity element reflects the unit s commitment to preparing candidates to support learning for all students from diverse populations, cultures, and environments regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, physical or learning disabilities, or national origin. The professional education programs at EKU accept the obligation to prepare pre-service professionals to be competent as they face the challenges of today s diverse school and societal settings. To further broaden the NCATE definition of diversity the unit s programs consider but do not assess each of the 12 sources of EKU Graduate Program Review Documents: MAT Secondary Page 9

10 cultural identity (race, ethnicity/nationality, social class, sex/gender, health, age, geographic region, sexuality, religion, social status, language, and ability/disability) that influence teaching and learning. The development of candidates cultural competency is infused in teacher education coursework as well as field and clinical experiences throughout the teacher education program. The design of each course in the M.A.T. program incorporate Kentucky Teacher into the objectives of the course. The candidate receives an introduction to the in EGC 820 Professional Studies I: Teachers, Schools, and Society and continues to gain a fuller understanding along with a working knowledge of the standards in the remainder of the M.A.T. program. A working knowledge is developed through development of objectives, lesson plans, field and clinical observations, and implementation of lesson plans in methods courses and teaching/practicum experiences. Integration of the KY EPSB Code of Ethics From the first course, EGC 820 Professional Studies I: Teachers, Schools, and Society, candidates receive an in-depth introduction to the Kentucky Education Professional Board Code of Ethics, which is reinforced through advising and the interview processes. Throughout the program candidates are expected to demonstrate professionalism by upholding the Code of Ethics. Content Certification Options The Master of Arts of Teaching / secondary certification program allows candidates to earn teaching certification in 17 different disciplines. Candidates must prove competency to teach their chosen certification discipline prior to admission to the M.A.T. program in 2 ways. First, candidates must take and pass the PRAXIS II content exam(s) required for certification. Second, candidates must hold an undergraduate major (or the equivalent courses) in the certification discipline. This policy ensures that M.A.T. candidates are highly qualified as defined by No Child Left Behind legislation and that they have the content knowledge to teach their particular discipline if they choose to take a teaching job while in the M.A.T. program, using temporary provisional certification as allowed by state alternative certification legislation. 16 Upon admission to the program, M.A.T. candidates already have the content knowledge to teacher their particular discipline. But because the M.A.T. program leads not only to initial certification, but also to Rank II teaching status, EKU faculty believe that candidates should have an advanced knowledge of their certification discipline. Candidates in the Master of Arts of Teaching program extend knowledge of their teaching discipline by taking 12 hours of graduate level content area courses. These courses are chosen by candidates, after consulting with their advisor, so as to best address the skills and concepts described in the Kentucky Core Content. The 12 hours of graduate content courses chosen by each candidate vary greatly, depending upon the individual interest, teaching assignment, and needs of the candidate. It is a Web-based tool for students to monitor their academic progress toward degree completion. DegreeWorks also allows candidates and their advisors to plan future academic coursework. A DegreeWorks audit is a review of past, current and "planned" coursework that provides information on completed and outstanding requirements necessary to complete a degree/major/minor/concentration. The information in DegreeWorks is refreshed each night. Admission and Exit criteria are maintained in University Catalogs. Portfolio requirements are distributed during initial education classes and are reinforced throughout the program.
