The prospective teacher candidate will participate in an MAT interview/orientation which can be scheduled at any time throughout the semester. 1

2 To receive consideration for admission, applicants MUST COMPLETE ALL of the following steps. (Use this checklist to help you organize your application) A. Attend an orientation (contact MAT Office for an appointment at ). B. Complete and submit the MSU Graduate Application to the Graduate Office (701 Ginger Hall, use form enclosed in this packet or complete the application on-line at There will be a one-time application fee of $30. C. Complete and submit the MAT Application to the MAT office (address below). D. Submit all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts with the graduate application to the Graduate Office (701Ginger Hall). E. Submit a copy of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts with the MAT application to the address listed below. F. Along with transcript/s, submit official evidence of required 750 GRE, or 21 ACT scores, or passing Praxis II scores. G. Submit proof of a criminal records check from the Kentucky State Police. It is your responsibility to complete the form, pay the fee, and submit all required material to the State Police consistent with the directions provided. 3 What is the MAT Program? The Master of Arts in Teaching Program (MAT) is an alternative certification program that provides students an opportunity to gain a Temporary Provisional Certificate to teach in Kentucky. The MAT student is to be considered equal to any student graduating from the traditional teacher education program. Therefore, he/she will be eligible to secure a full-time teaching position starting as Rank III status. Who qualifies for the MAT Program? Prospective students must hold a bachelors degree prior to enrolling in the MAT Program. Students wishing to teach at the secondary or middle grade levels are also required to take at least 6 hours of graduate content coursework in addition to the content hours already received through undergraduate work. What does it mean to be highly qualified to teach in Kentucky? Passing the Praxis II content or specialty exam enables the student to be considered highly qualified to teach in his/her prospective content area. Students gaining certification within the MAT Program will be required to take the Praxis II content exam prior to registering for hours exceeding 12. Currently, the state of Kentucky does not require students to pass the Praxis II content exam in order to secure a full-time teaching position. What advantages are there to hiring an MAT student? MAT students are extremely fortunate to be offered 2 full years of teaching support through joint efforts of the MAT Program at Morehead State University and the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program. MAT students also come from various authentic backgrounds, thus allowing for a wide range of experiences and real-world connections to enhance their teaching. 3

4 If a student is hired for a full-time teaching position, what are the next steps? The completion of a TC-TP application is required in order to obtain a Temporary Provisional Certificate. It is the student s responsibility to complete pages one, three, and the top portion of page 4, including all signatures. The MAT Coordinator will complete the recommendation page (page 4) to verify MAT participation and eligibility and to apply for Temporary Provisional Certification. The form and official transcripts are then mailed to the Education Professional Standards Board. Two copies of the official certificates are issued to the candidate within two to three weeks. One copy is for the student and one is for district personnel records. Candidates are required to make a copy of the certificate and submit it to the MAT Office via fax ( ). How many years can the Temporary Provisional Certificate be issued? The Educational Professional Standards Board (EPSB) has granted a three year period for Temporary Provisional Certification. Therefore, from the time a student begins teaching, he/she will have three years to complete the degree requirements. If a student fails to pass all Praxis II exams, including the Principles of Learning and Teaching exam, EPSB will not grant a 3 rd year Temporary Provisional. Can the student expect any type of mentorship during his/her first year of teaching? The unique design of the MAT program provides both university and on-site mentoring services to students during the practicum year, as well as KTIP mentoring during the second year. With a mentor teacher assigned at the school site and a university mentor visiting a minimum of two times, per semester, students are observed regularly and individual growth plans are developed and closely monitored through out the practicum experience. When can an MAT student be eligible to start KTIP? MAT students are eligible to begin KTIP during their second year of teaching. However, he/she must pass all Praxis II exams, including the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) to be eligible to begin the KTIP process. 4

The required courses for both middle and secondary certifications are included in the table below. A complete listing of courses (AKA Check Sheet) are made available to all fully admitted students under their secure online Datatel WebAdvisor Account. Charges for graduate tuition at MSU compare favorably with the costs of other Kentucky public institutions. Since most of the MAT Program is offered online, candidates are able to build a convenient and flexible schedule of courses while maintaining a cost effective budget. Application for Master of Arts in Alternative Education Track A: Temporary Provisional Certification designed for those wishing to gain a full-time teaching position, who hold a Bachelor s degree in a certifiable major (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, Math, English, Business, P.E., Health, Spanish, or French). Track B: Teacher Certification for Bachelor s degree holders with a certifiable major (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, Math, English, Business, P.E., Health, Spanish, or French). **Both Track A and B certification areas qualify for the addition of middle grade certification in grade levels 5-9. **Upon evaluation of a candidates transcripts (undergraduate and graduate level), it may be determined that a candidate is eligible to pursue certification only at the middle grade level. 5
