Brief summary of education The course summarises the standards for collection of DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) patient dose data and QC (Quality Control) data from the PACSRIS (Picture Archiving and Communication SystemRadiology Information System) workflow and gives practical advices on how to implement workflows in a standard PACS environment. Available IT applications and methodologies are presented to highlight use of DICOM image metadata: the information available in the file header of every DICOM image. A summary of the intensions of the regulatory authorities in the Nordic countries regards automated collection of patient doses in diagnostic radiology is given. 5. Target audience Registered medical physicists and engineers within EU 6. Educational needs The technical and clinical developments in the field of radiology are accelerating. However, the labour of the staff working with quality control and service is growing more difficult due to use of highly complicated equipment and large patient throughputs. On the other hand, the technical progress creates a possibility to monitor the radiological process using standardised data in the PACS workflow. This data source is often overlooked due to poorly developed infrastructures for collection, processing and visualisation of the data. The information available can also be accessed using a wide variety of tools and standards. The objective of the course is to present an introduction to the topic, describe the practical possibilities at hand and provide a platform for further developments in the field. Automated collection of patient dose and QC data contributes to better understanding of how radiological equipment is used in daily practise. The implementation of a well designed local workflow for collection and processing of data require knowledge of the alternatives. In order to facilitate the use of available data in the radiological workflow there is a need to share information on the subject, inspire developers to continue their efforts and create a possibility for cooperation. The course will be a meeting place for establishing useful contacts.
