3 1. Similarity of US & China in the forming of shale gas reservoir Lithology :Mainly dark or black mud shale with rich organic matters. Generation Expulsion Migration Oil Crack Gas preservation Shale gas petroliferous system Simple self-generation, selfreservoir petroliferous system (Source from Jarvie et al., 2003 ) Hydrocarbon generation stages: :Includes sustainable generating, supply and accumulation continuously by biological action and thermal maturation. Same gas source rock and reservoir : Generation and Expulsion of hydrocarbons, Migration, Accumulation and Preservation of all in the same stratum Features: full of gas, variable occurrences, enriched natural gas accumulation, without migration or short distance migration. Abnormal pressure: Original shale gas reservoir is usually abnormal pressure, and its pressure varied with the late geological processes.

15 4. E&P big picture in China 4.1 China has just started shale gas E&P 1) Currently China only made breakthroughs in the marine bed in Sichuan basin, while other marine beds, continental beds or double mixed beds have not formed productivity yet. In July 2014, China has released 54 exploitation rights covering an area of 170,000m 2, and completed 400 wells including 130 horizontal wells, and China has completed 20,000 meters of 2D seismic work and 1500m2 of 3D seismic work. 2) China totally has 500 billion cubic meters including proved, probable and possible reserves, and has realized 1.5bn cubic meters annual production. The total reserves of shale gas in China is expected to hit or even exceed 6.5bn cubic meters in 2015.
16 4. E&P big picture in China 4.2 Technological advancement in past five years 1)E&P technique and equipment are basically localized, cost for horizontal wells has been reduced, and construction period has been cut shorter. 2) Shale gas companies have mastered the physical geographic, drilling, completion, workover and fracturing technology, and are capable of drilling 3500m horizontal well and apply stage fracturing. The self-developed fracturing truck has been put on production. The largest fracture-series we achieved are 22 in horizontal well, with a length up to 2130 meters. In some cases, the drilling depth hits 5000 meters. 3)The drilling period of Horizontal well is cut from 150 days to 70 days, and the shortest period only last 46 days.
17 4. E&P big picture in China 4.3 China still faces many challenges 1)Needs to optimize the shale gas technical evaluation regulations in continental, marine-continental transitional areas; 2)Has not fully acquired the core technology of shale gas E&P; 3) Waste disposal and environmental protection issues needs particular attention and improvement; 4)Supporting regulations and policies are inadequate
