1 No matter how often I visit the Ashmolean, it always finds a way to draw me in. Be it an exhibition, a talk, returning to a favourite gallery object or discovering one I hadn t noticed before, the Ashmolean always offers something compelling and inspiring. I ve remembered it in my will because I want it to continue to inspire its visitors, including my children and grandchildren, as much as it has me. Three transformational legacies The late Alice Jolley left her collection of paintings and a share of her estate to the Ashmolean, helping to refurbish the Western Art galleries in preparation for opening the new Ashmolean in An unrestricted bequest from the late Brian Tait has provided essential support for our free education and outreach programmes, giving visitors of all ages the chance to learn more about our collections. Nicholas Barber CBE Friend, patron, major benefactor and former Chairman of the Ashmolean The Triumph of Love Unseen in public since 1960, Titian s The Triumph of Love was acquired by the Ashmolean in 2008 and is now on permanent display. The painting was allocated to the Museum in place of inheritance tax under the government s Acceptance in Lieu Scheme. As the painting s value exceeded the donor s tax liability, additional funding was required and came from a number of private sources, including the legacies of the late Yvonne Carey and the late Felicity Rhodes, helping to secure this important painting for the nation. 2 A lasting gift The Ashmolean is built upon the legacies of John Tradescant and Elias Ashmole, and opened to the public in Countless bequests and gifts over the centuries have seen the original collection grow to become the uniquely rich and diverse museum of art and archaeology that is the Ashmolean of today. Entry to the Ashmolean is free. Your support allows us to continue to give free access to over one million visitors each year, and to provide the best for the collections in our care. Leaving a legacy is a very personal way to make a gift that will have a lasting impact, and for many it is a way to make a larger donation than would be possible during their lifetime. In spite of this, at present only 7% of those who give to charities choose to make a gift in their will*. We are deeply grateful to those who choose to support the Museum in this way, and we hope that you will consider remembering the Ashmolean in your will, helping to sustain and enhance this most special of museums. *source: Legacy10 Front cover: Camille Pissarro ( ) The Tuileries Gardens, Rainy Weather. 3 How your gift will help Your gift, however large or small, will make a difference at the Ashmolean. Leaving an unrestricted legacy allows us to use your gift wherever the need is greatest, supporting essential areas of work including education and outreach, conservation, gallery improvements, exhibitions and acquisitions. Alternatively, you can specify the area towards which your gift should be directed, for example a collection or department which holds a personal interest or attachment for you.

6 Anyone can leave a legacy gift to the Ashmolean and we would be happy to discuss your wishes with you in more detail. We are often asked about different types of legacy as there are a number of alternatives you may wish to consider: Pecuniary Legacy: This allows you to specify a sum of money to give. Specific Legacy: This enables you to leave a specific asset such as property, works of art and shares. We would be happy to advise you as to whether objects or works are appropriate for our collections. Residuary Legacy: This is a gift of all or part of your estate after other legacies and expenses have been paid. Reversionary Legacy: This allows you to leave assets to the Ashmolean whilst giving a named person the benefit of them during his or her lifetime. Tax advantages The Ashmolean is a department of the University of Oxford which has full charitable status as an exempt charity under the Charities Act 1993 (and therefore does not have a charity reference number). Any gift you make to the Museum in your will is therefore exempt from inheritance tax and may provide other tax benefits. Suggested wording for your will As the Ashmolean is part of the University of Oxford, please include the following in your will to ensure that your intention for your gift is clear: I give free of tax the [sum of / item specified / residue of my estate] to The Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University of Oxford for the Ashmolean Museum. If you would like more information or to talk to someone about how your gift could help, please contact: Susie Billings, Development Office, Ashmolean Museum, Beaumont Street, Oxford, OX1 2PH E susie.billings@ashmus.ox.ac.uk T +44 (0) We recommend that you speak to a solicitor for personal and confidential up-to-date advice tailored to your needs. They will ensure your intentions are clearly expressed and legally valid, and will be able to advise you on any tax benefits in relation to your gift.
