Ah! What is Faith? The ever yet simple and yet convoluted word in the Church. This brief article will glimpse into this most profound word, Faith from the perspective of the Holy Scriptures, theology and the spiritual life of the Church. After Jesus has spent three years with the disciples He asks them, Who do you say I am? MT 16:15 Peter responds, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus then goes on to say to the disciples, And I tell you that you are Peter [Rock], and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. The foundation of a vibrant and charismatic church is Faith, the faith that is expressed in what St. Peter said to the Lord Himself. Previously in the Gospel of Matthew, during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said about believing in His teachings and in Him, Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Faith is the foundation of who a person is. Pastoral Message from Father John Lardas The base of the theology of the Church is Faith. The sacred doctrine of the Nicene Creed begins with the faithful person saying, I believe in one God Many of the controversies that were addressed at the ecumenical councils were based on faith issues. Is Jesus the Son of God? Is the Holy Spirit God? Is Jesus really a man? Is Jesus really God? Is the resurrection real? Thus when one proclaims the sacred doctrine of the Nicene Creed during the Divine Liturgy, he or she is saying, I believe! Spiritually, St. Gregory Palamas says the following about faith in the context of the Who do you say I am? MT 16:15 Peter responds, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Gospel story when Jesus walks on the water. What is the source of patience in temptations? Genuine faith in God. St. Nektarios on his thoughts about Christ s teachings says Faith is the chief source of virtue and power. When one wants to look at the challenges presented in the community of the church, every person needs to contemplate wholeheartedly on a very simple and yet powerful word, FAITH! During His time with the disciples, the Lord said unto them, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. MT 16:24 From this passage, one might conclude that it is not just about having the name Christian because of belief, but to have the works of belief. St. John Chrysostom teaches the following based on this passage. For so, if one were a judge at the games, and had a friend in the lists, he would not wish to crown him by favor only, but also for his own toils. Thus, with Faith, comes commitment, hard work and toil. Ending, after Jesus had cursed a fig tree, He said to His disciples on the concept of FAITH, Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, Go, throw yourself into the sea, and it will be done. ΜΤ 21:21 In Christ, Fr. John K. Lardas Archangel Michael Sep/Oct

Getting To Know Deacon Joshua Pappas Dn. Joshua Pappas joined the Archangel Michael Church community in August 2016 along with his wife, Diakonissa Joanna. He is the son of Fr. Harry and Presbytera Kerry Pappas, who live and serve in Stamford, CT. Dn. Joshua was raised primarily in a suburb of Minneapolis and attended college in North Carolina at Davidson, where he studied religion and economics. After graduating in 2008, he worked for three years at Liberty Mutual in White Plains, NY while continuing to discern a call to ministry that began in college. In 2011, he left Liberty Mutual to pursue a Master of Divinity at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. Dn. Joshua was ordained to the Diaconate on August 7, 2016 by His Grace Bishop Andonios of Phasiane at the Church of the Archangels in Stamford, CT. Serving on the altar that day was his father, Fr. Harry Pappas, Fr. John Lardas, Fr. Nikolas Karloutsos, Fr. Evangelos Evangelidis and others. Thankful for the Lord s guidance and abundant love, they are excited to work and grow with the Archangel Michael community in the spirit of the Gospel. In 2014, he married Joanna Lialios who hails from Glenview, a northern suburb of Chicago. Holding a Master in Education and having taught high school for several years, Diakonissa Joanna taught at a private Catholic school while Dn. Joshua finished his final year of seminary. 6 New Beginnings Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth... --Isaiah 43:19 By God s grace, the Archangel Michael Church finds itself at a truly unique time in our parish s history as we embark on a series of new beginnings. After 35 years, Fr. Dennis celebrated his final Sunday Divine Liturgy of our Archangel Michael Church on June 26th. On June 30th, the feast of the Holy Apostles, Fr. Dennis and Fr. Nikolas celebrated their last Divine Liturgy together. What a blessed coincidence that the feast honoring the first apostles of our holy Orthodox Church would be a day to celebrate the thriving community that our beloved Fr. Dennis and Fr. Nik have guided, nurtured, and grown. At the conclusion of the liturgy, Parish Council president Michael Psyllos presented Fr. Nik with the icon of Archangel Michael that was written(painted) by parishioner Anna Frangoulis Gioutlakis, who trained in Greece to be an iconographer. The very next day, on July 1st, we welcomed Fr. John Lardas and Presbytera Eleni and their family to our community. Fr. John celebrated his first Divine Liturgy in our chapel, honoring the feast of Sts. Cosmas and Damian of Rome. Again, what a fitting coincidence that these brothers, who were physicians, possessed the gifts of healing the sick and when their faith was tested, they professed, it is not by our own power that we treat you, but by the power of Christ, our true God. Believe in Him, and be healed. Fr. John and Presbytera Eleni s younger son, Kemon, served on the altar with George and Stephen Tsimisiris. 6 Archangel Michael Sep/Oct

New Beginnings Fr. John s first Sunday Divine Liturgy at AMC was celebrated on July 3rd. In attendance along with Presbytera Eleni were many AMC parishioners, as well parishioners from Sts. Constantine & Helen (Brooklyn), St. Nicholas (Flushing), family members and friends, with Kemon again serving on the altar. Fr. John was overcome with emotion and gratitude, as his service and leadership represents a new beginning for all. He also recognized and thanked Fr. Dennis and emphasized that he and Presbytera Paula will always be welcome at our Archangel Michael Church. Fr. John is joined by Deacon Joshua and Diakonnisa Joanna Pappas. A 2015 graduate of Holy Cross Seminary, Dn. Joshua was ordained to the Diaconate on August 7th at the parish of The Archangels in Danbury Ct. and he will be ordained to the Holy Priesthood on October 9th at AMC. Deacon Joshua will be working closely with Fr. John as he begins his ministry. Truly, it is a time of new beginnings. With His providence and grace, we pray that our Archangel Michael Church continues to thrive, provides a strong spiritual base, and strengthens us as we do His good work. I can do everything through him who gives me faith. -Philippians 4:13. Archangel Michael Sep/Oct

News & Events Philoptochos SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT HANDS-ON CHARITY This past July, the 43rd National Philoptochos Biennial Convention was held at the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center in Nashville, TN. The delegates from AMC were Chris Ioannou, President; Eleni Germanakos, Social Services liason; Eleni Sfiroudis, Recording Secretary/ Feed The Hungry Coordinator. Needs children, to innovative projects like Angel Babies which is the re-purposing of wedding dresses into burial garments for babies who pass away, our sisters around the nation are very busy doing hands-on work. MAKING A DIFFERENCE - ACTS OF KINDNESS We returned inspired and energized. We would like to share our experience with you here in the hope that more of you might be moved to action. To excerpt an article in The Tennessean, July 5, 2016: We women of the Greek Orthodox Church in America have served about 750,000 meals to those in need since February 2015 and we want people to know about it. Spreading that success story isn t meant to be selfcongratulatory, but inspirational, said Maria Logus, the national president of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society. Logus, who became the head of the philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America in October 2014, is leading an effort to raise the 85-year-old organization s public profile and reemphasize tangible acts of charity. I want people to know what Philoptochos can do. I want it to inspire them to do things, Logus said. I ll partner with them. I ll work with them. We ll do whatever we have to do as long as we re all creating a better world. Philoptochos has about 26,000 members nationwide and the National Philoptochos gave out $1.74 million in aid in But the question of what Philoptochos does continues to persist, Logus said. We have been a secret too long, Logus said. We re not just the fundraising arm. We re the philanthropic arm. We re out there. We re doing hands-on philanthropy.... If there is a need out there, we are going to respond. It is what we do... From youth projects like The Kids N Cancer Buddy Program, or the initiation of a family camp for Special With the initiation of MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY which was first established through the Philoptochos Literacy Committee s partnership with Loukoumi books, the initiative is a cross-generational project focused on engaging young children in order to make a difference. Just as we partnered with our own AMCares in the making of thousands of sandwiches to feed the homeless this past year, chapters all around the country, together with the youth from their Greek Schools, Sunday Schools and sports programs have been busy: ~making cards for veterans, that were placed On hospital meal trays ~making travel-size health kits for the homeless and for victims of disaster ~gathering and distributing gently used icons to veterans ~coordinating housewarming baskets for veterans moving into their new homes ~making Hearts of Hope pillows for heart patients recovering from surgery...and so much more. The question is, what will we do over the next ecclesiastical year? Make a Difference Day is OCTOBER 22nd, The goal is for all members nationally to collectively do 8500 good deeds. This number represents 100 deeds for each of the 85 years that Philoptochos has been in existence. THE LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE The motto of this new arm of National Philoptochos is Inspire, motivate and empower women to reach their fullest potential while contributing collectively through philanthropic service. The mission is to inspire visionary, philanthropic servant-leaders with a commitment to community service. For further information and to apply 8 Archangel Michael Sep/Oct

Our chapter, along with our entire community here at Archangel Michael strongly supports The Hellenic Relief Foundation. There is another charity that has received funds from National Philoptochos and that is Apostoli Mission, which has an impressive record of professionalism and spiritualism. We are all urged to support their efforts. Apostoli - Philanthropic Organization of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens www. mkoapostoli.com and info@mkoapostoli.gr ST. NICHOLAS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH AND NATIONAL SHRINE To date, Philoptochos has donated $1.3 Million. To the skeptics that have taken issue with the scale, scope and ultimate cost of this project, we want to point out that the Archdiocese has taken on an historic mission: we are challenged as a Greek Orthodox community to build the only house of worship on this sacred ground, which will include a nondenominational bereavement center to overlook the memorial. With millions of visitors projected annually, a responsibility of this magnitude is one of the most complex projects in the redevelopment of the site. This is to be a national shrine of Eastern Christianity. We have to have a masterpiece of architecture, the Archbishop has said. The ultimate design of a domed structure, which will glow at night through a veneer of white Pentelic marble from the same vein in Greece that was quarried to construct the Parthenon, must also be constructed according to the bomb-proof engineering required for the site. With a design strongly influenced by Hagia Sophia, a landscape that could scarcely have been imagined a decade ago has become a reality. Philoptochos remains vigilant in our support of the rebuilding of this church. ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING INITIATIVE Convention delegates were given a presentation by survivors of human trafficking who shared their stories of abuse and addiction and finding healing at Thistle Farms and Magdalene Homes. The ladies at Thistle Farms produce and market handmade products under the Thistle Farms brand which can be found at Whole Foods among other national retailers. The money raised is used to support Magdalene Homes as a refuge for other victims.the delegates donated a total of 350 individual gift cards valued at over $8000. On the weekend of November 18th-20th, 2016, the Youth Choir will sing at the DAD Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians 32nd Annual Church Music Conference entitled, I Will Sing Praises to God As Long As I Live. The conference will take place in Southampton at the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary with Fr. Alex Karloutsos and Fr. Constantine Lazarakis. Composer Dr. Tikey Zes will be conducting the adult choir and Archdiocesan District Youth Archangel Michael Sep/Oct

Music Liaison, Georgia Kaufman, will be conducting the youth choir for the Hierarchical Liturgy which will be celebrated with His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios. The Federation of Church Musicians has made arrangements with the Southampton Inn, located in close proximity to the church. To assure hotel accommodations for our Youth Choir, we have booked reservations for Saturday evening, November 19th. On Saturday afternoon, music workshops, luncheon and rehearsals are scheduled followed by an evening Dinner Dance. It promises to be a very memorable experience. To learn more about the Southampton Conference and hotel accommodations, please contact Miss Georgia or Miss Eleni at kriseleni@icloud.com or via telephone at MAY GOD BLESS EVERYONE AS WE BEGIN A NEW ECCLESIASTICAL YEAR! GOYA Welcome back! We hope that everyone had a wonderful summer! The GOYA year is off to a running start! You will also have the opportunity to meet the new Board that evening. We are pleased to announce the GOYA Board: Co-Presidents: Steven Gerazounis, Francesco Maropakis Co-Vice Presidents: Tommy Drenis, Konstantinos Geleris, Marika Reynolds, Lazarus Ziozis Co-Secretaries: Liana Drenis, Irene Tsahas, Eleana Tsiamtsiouris, Irene Tsahas Co-Treasurers: Marinos Mihalatos, Themi Pappas, Christiana Psyllos, Despina Tsiamtsiouris Looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday, September 9th! 15 Health & Wellness PREPARING FOR YOUR FIRST 5K WALK/RUN By Stefani Pappas, RDN, CPT The Annual Archangel Michael 5K Walk/Run is coming up this Fall. Signing up for a race such as this can be the perfect way to kick off your fitness routine and help a worthy cause. Running is a great option for those who are looking to increase their physical activity. This affordable and time-efficient exercise is something that you can manage at your own pace. Oftentimes, getting the motivation to start your running regimen can be difficult. Having a short-term goal of an upcoming race gives you something to work towards and look forward to! Here are some tips to help you prepare for your first 5K Walk/Run, and to get you started on your journey towards better health. Create A Training Schedule A 5K race is 3.1 miles. Don t be daunted by the mileage; this is a great goal distance for a beginner. Two months of training is ideal to prepare for a 5K race, but always consult your doctor before beginning a physical activity regimen. Your 5K training schedule includes a combination of running, walking, and rest. Aim for three days of running/walking for 30 minutes, and then two days of lightly walking for 30 minutes. Spend one to two days per week resting, which may include stretching or light yoga. Customize this program to your liking, and write out an actual plan that you can view every day. Download A Running App Running apps can help track and improve your fitness. These apps provide comparison, coaching, and other ways to enhance your physical activity. You can share your run on social media and get your friends involved to help encourage you on your fitness journey. My two favorite apps are the Nike+ Running App and Map My Run. You can download these or search for other apps that you prefer. Invest In Training Gear Good quality training gear can optimize your performance. Invest in a good pair of running shoes that you can break in prior to the race. Wear wicking fabrics that allow air to circulate and cool off your body during your run. Choose bright clothes that keep you visible if you are running outside. New training gear also adds extra motivation and excitement while on your running journey. Focus On Nutrition Good nutrition can enhance your physical activity performance and overall wellbeing. Focus on a balanced diet that includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Minimize the amount of processed foods and sugary items that you consume. Don t neglect hydration, especially since physical activity increases your hydration needs. Maximize Your Potential You are fully capable of putting your health first! Know that you have the ability and confidence to achieve your goals. A 5K Walk/Run is meant to be a fun experience for you and the community. What matters is your effort and perseverance during this exciting time! On the day of your race, try to keep everything in routine. Eat the same breakfast you ate while training, and leave an hour or so for your body to digest before racing. Get to the race early to stretch and lightly warm up your body. Stay hydrated and ensure adequate sleep both during your training and prior to race day. Take a deep breath, and give that race all you ve got! Stefani Pappas, RDN, CPT, is a Clinical Dietitian at St. Francis Hospital. She is a personal trainer, fitness instructor, and contributing writer for Elite Daily. She provides private and group nutrition counseling on Long Island and in New York City. Visit her website com for more information. Archangel Michael Sep/Oct
