.. Toilet Training Journey Step 2:- Dry days with pants Dry days with pants. It feels different with pants on practice wearing and not wetting them at home. You can practice pulling them up & down. 5 .. Toilet Training Journey Step 3:- Dry days out. Dry days out with your pants. Take your pants and potty out, perhaps to the park or nursery. Can you keep those feet dry though? Colour in a foot (or use a sticker) each time you make it to the potty on-time and your feet stay dry! For toilet training hints and tips see 5 P a g e

.. Toilet Training Journey Step 4:- Dry nights, Are you ready? I sleep in a bed Colour in the little feet if you can do it! 7 .. Toilet Training Journey Step 5:- Dry nights. Dry nights Can you use those feet to get to the potty at night? Practice before you go to bed. In the morning, colour in a foot (or use a sticker) each your feet have got you to the potty on time! For toilet training hints and tips see 7 P a g e

.. Toilet Training Journey Well done! You did it! Well done! You have completed your toilet training journey. I m day dry I m night dry For toilet training hints and tips see 8 P a g e

.. Toilet Training Journey Parents notes Before you embark on step one, use the little feet on page 1 as pointers to let you know that they are ready. Step 1:- Choose a day or ideally two or three when you and your child can be at home or in the garden. Let your child have breakfast normally, then when you do your normally nappy change just don t put a new one on. Gently explain to your child that they should ask for the potty if they need a wee or poo and have plenty of towels to mop up with! Never get angry when they have an accident (and they will) because they have to learn what it feels like to wet themselves and then learn to anticipate the wee or poo coming. Its ok to be sad though, as they need to know you d rather they went on the potty During the first few days ask them to sit on the potty When they do successfully use the potty reward them with some colouring or a sticker and a big hug! If the first try at this stage is awful then try going into washable pull-ups or toilet training pants for a few days (or while they are in childcare) and have a another go the next weekend Step 2:- Once they are confidentially anticipating their own need to go introduce the pants Go shopping for special pants and do buy lots Practice putting pants on and taking them off you could even make it a game how many pairs of pants can you put on, or who can put their pants on quickest! Remember though that wearing big boy/girl pants or knickers will feel different and your child may revert to wetting themselves as they think they are wearing a pull-up or nappy, and they are trying to break a habit they ve been used to for two years at least. Once they are doing this step confidently at home, chat to your child s other day carers (nursery or child minders) and explain where your child is and how well they are doing, then set a date for step 3 Step 3:- Try some short trips to the park with potty in hand If your child is in day-care send them with at least 5 changes of clothes Step 4&5:- Night toilet training is just as important as day and marks a crucial step towards independence Don t leave the transition too long after they are day dry as older children can become reliant on night nappies Buy some extra sheets, a waterproof mattress cover or use bed-mats (washable versions are available now) For toilet training hints and tips see 9 P a g e

.. Toilet Training Journey Parents notes Step 4&5 Continued:- Do use a potty with an automatic movement sensitive night light so that they can see where the potty is without having to worry about switching the light on or being scared of the dark when they wake up. Do have a potty in the bedroom, make sure the path to the potty is clear and let them practice getting into and out of bed to use it. Try not to leave a light on permanently as it can disturb their sleep and they will get into the habit of not falling asleep without it. As with day dry, give them at least three weeks before you give up, it takes a long time to break a habit, but if it really is hopeless then go back to pull-ups for a few weeks then try again. Don t be surprised if over the next few years they have an odd accident, mainly these will be when they are worried about stuff like starting school, moving house etc but do take the to the doctors if they suddenly start regularly wetting the bed having been dry for some time. For toilet training hints and tips see 10 P a g e
