2 1.0 Primeval History Genesis 1-11 How our relationship with God started 1.1 Creation (1:1-2:25) Our relationship with God started at his initiative, he created us. o The existence of God seems to be a self-evident truth for the Holy Spirit (see Psalm 90:2) o Genesis 1:1 the Hebrew word for God is Elohim, which denotes majesty. o God clearly is the creator. And God said o We have been created in God s image. 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. - That means that we have been created in God s moral image. When people look at God s people they should be able to see what God is like. 1.2 The Fall (3:1-4:15) Our relationship with God is severed by our rebellion. o Genesis 3 presents us with the truth of Romans 5:12 Sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men because all sinned for before the law was given sin was in the world. o Our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Ephesians 6:12). o The temptation Satan casts doubt on the authority of God s word (3:1) The seed of doubt is watered with denial (3:4) T Then he feeds it with delusion. 3 o Adam and Eve did not die physically (at least not right away) but they did die spiritually- o Genesis 5:3 an echo of a phrase introduced earlier but this time the phrase reads, When Adam had lived 130 years he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image. o Our biggest problem is not what we do, but who we are (see Mark 7:20) o Notice the promise 3:15, And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel. o Praise God! He has given us a second Adam. So we read in I Corinthians 15:45-49 The first man Adam became a living being the last Adam, a life giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven. o With Christ in us we now demonstrate the image of God once again. 1.3 The Flood (4:16-9:29) o Notice the pervasiveness of sin (6:5) o Be sure to get the order right Noah found favour or grace in God s sight (6:8) and then was a righteous man (6:9) o Take note of the promise 8: 20,21 I will never again curse the ground because of humankind, for the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living creature as I have done. o And how God seals it with a sign 9:12 This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature. 4 1.4 The Tower of Babel (10:1-11:32) o Notice the self reliance and the self-worship (see 11:4) Then they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth. 2.0 Patriarchal History (Genesis 12:-50) How our relationship with God is sustained 2.1 Abraham (11:10 25:8) Faith Notice how Abraham s story contrasts with the tower of Babel. Tower of Babel Abraham 11:3 They said to one another 12:1 The Lord had said to Abram 11:2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 11:3,4 Come let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly Come let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name of ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth. 12:1 leave your country, your people and Your father s household and go to the land I will show you. Genesis 12:2 I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great and you will be a blessing. o Abraham was a man of faith. 5 The Abrahamic Covenant Genesis 12:1-3 Genesis 12:4,5 Genesis 13:14-17 Genesis 15:1-21 Genesis 17:1-27 Genesis 22:15-18 God initiated his covenant with Abram when he was living in Ur of the Chaldeans, promising a land, descendants, and blessing. Abram went with his family to Haran, lived there for a time, and left at the age of 75. After Lot separated from Abram, God again promised the land to him and his descendants. This covenant was ratified when God passed between the sacrificial animals Abram laid before God. When Abram was 99 God renewed His covenant, changing Abram s name to Abraham ( Father of a Multitude ). Sign of the covenant: circumcision. Confirmation of the covenant because of Abraham s obedience. The Abrahamic covenant was foundational to other covenants: *The promise of land in the Palestinian Covenant (Deuteronomy 30:1-10) * The promise of kingly descendants in the Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7:12-16) *The promise of blessing in the Old and New Covenants (Exodus 19:3-6; Jeremiah 31:31-40) o Genesis 22 Abraham willingly offers his son as a sacrifice. 2.2 Isaac (25:19-26:35) Trust 2.3 Jacob (27:1-36:43) Dependence 2.4 Joseph (37: ) Obedience Fall 2010 Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church Page 5 of 6
