2 Help and Hope FOUND at The Scott Mission! P overty was new to Joyce and her family. Their fear and hopelessness were made even worse because they didn t know anyone and had nowhere to turn for help. Then a friend from church told Joyce she could find help and hope at The Scott Mission. They told me, There s a place you can go. There s help out there, Joyce says, remembering the day when their lives changed forever. The Scott Mission helped with the food and clothing the family urgently needed and so much more! Joyce received counselling and joined a Bible study group. Her children went to summer camp, thanks to support from friends like you. study group and encouraging others who are adjusting to a new life in Toronto. I don t come to The Scott Mission for help anymore, Joyce says with a broad smile. I come here to help others. Joyce and her entire family are deeply grateful for the many kindnesses they received, and she encourages everyone to continue to support The Scott Mission with their time and financial gifts. Thank you for being partners. If there was no support, The Scott Mission would not be able to do all that they do, Joyce says. And at Christmas, instead of having to explain to her little children that food on the table was more important than presents, you helped The Scott Mission make sure her little ones each had gifts to open. That was more than 15 years ago and, today, Joyce s family is in a much better place. Those who are hungry and alone can attend a special Christmas day meal and fellowship... with gifts! Here are ways you can help those who are in need this Christmas season: MEALS. Just $4.25 will provide a hot meal this Christmas season. TOYS. Donate or host a toy drive to stock our free Christmas toy store for struggling families! CLOTHING. Provide warm clothing for the neediest as the weather turns cold. $30 will keep a needy child warm with a new snowsuit or winter coat. FOOD. Donate or host a drive to stock the shelves of our food bank. Items urgently needed include canned fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, and pasta. Or sponsor a grocery gift card for $45. TURKEYS. Donate a turkey to give those who are hungry a special Christmas meal of their very own. HOW YOU CAN HELP THIS CHRISTMAS! No one should be hungry and alone at Christmas! 5 This Christmas, Benny is Thankful for YOU! B enny worked hard and enjoyed a life of independence, until extreme back problems made it impossible for him to work. He was relieved to receive some financial help for his disability, but it was not enough to make ends meet. Isolated and frightened for his survival, Benny turned to The Scott Mission. Here, he found tangible help with food and clothing, as well as the encouragement he needed to cope with the constant pain. I ve been coming to the Mission for almost 6 years now, Benny says. I enjoy the meals and talking with staff. They are such nice people. I haven t met any group like them. Benny keeps busy on projects like painting and other work at The Scott Mission s Collingwood Lodge at Blue Mountain. The lodge is a special place where retreats are held so clients can learn job and life skills, and spend time in God s Word in the peace and tranquility of the great outdoors. This Christmas, Benny will be thanking God for caring friends who make it possible for The Scott Mission to serve the huge number of people who turn to us for help each day. Keep supporting because a whole lot of people need help and the Mission is doing a great job, Benny says. Thank you for giving generously at Christmas and all year long to help people like Benny. A Heartfelt Gift of Time and Treasure S usan Cloyd loves to help others. In her professional life, she worked as an emergency room nurse. There, she frequently encountered homeless people and their great need always made her want to do more to help them. So upon retiring Susan joined our wonderful team of volunteers at The Scott Mission, and turned her compassion toward those who are hungry, homeless, and hurting. Over the last ten years, Susan has served in a great many capacities, but her greatest joy is in serving meals and encouragement to those in need of help and hope. I do the serving, and I always love it, Susan says. It absolutely helps and they re grateful. When I leave, some of the guys say come back soon! I want to help them feel contented and maybe have a little laughter in their lives. Plus, I ve done something that makes me feel good, she adds. Susan Cloyd has served as one of The Scott Mission s volunteers for ten years. Her compassion for others has brought help, hope, and healing into a great many hearts in the Toronto area. In addition to serving the hungry this holiday season, Susan will be working in The Scott Mission s Toy Room. There, she will bring joy to parents who are struggling to make ends meet by helping them choose from donated new toys so their children will have a gift to open on Christmas. Susan says the interaction with parents is a special time of sharing and caring, Most parents are very genuine and grateful. Some say Merry Christmas and give me hugs. Susan gives of her treasure as well as her time, supporting The Scott Mission with financial gifts and also with donations of new toys to stock the Toy Room.
