GOVERNMENT AS SOURCE OF FUNDING From nextgov.com
GOVERNMENT AS SOURCE OF FUNDING Some of this money is available for the private sector Contracts: Grants Grants are not just for academia Government stressing commercialization of academic research Applied research vs pure research
DARPA Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Information Innovation Office (I2O) Current example: DARPA-BAA-11-63: Automated Program Analysis for Cybersecurity (APAC), Response Date 9/14/2011 The Automated Program Analysis for Cybersecurity program seeks to develop new automated program analyses capable of proving that programs have security properties of interest to the Department of Defense (DoD), and to demonstrate those analyses in the form of tools designed specifically to keep malicious code out of DoD Android-based mobile application marketplaces.
NSF National Science Foundation (NSF) Funds mainly academic institutions but there are opportunities for Partnerships with private sector organizations Also Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) opportunities Designed to stimulate technological innovation and increase private sector commercialization Phase I, Phase II and Phase III (commercialization) funding Example: : Electronics, Information and Communication Technologies (EI) due December 2, 2011
GOVERNMENT LABS Many labs have some form of cybersecurity component U.S. Air Force Research Lab, Rome NY Agile Cyber Technology (ACT) program Due September 7, 2011 Naval Research Lab, Center for High Assurance Computer Systems White papers continuously accepted Various contracts and grants awarded
IN-Q-TEL Launched in 1999 as a private, independent, notfor-profit organization by CIA Makes strategic investments in startup companies that have developed commercially-focused technologies that will provide strong, near-term advantages (within 36 months) to the intelligence community mission Over 70% of the companies funded have never done business with the government Example: Keyhole, acquired By Google and launched as Google Earth Submit business plan for consideration
