2 Reading Component The reading component consists of 3 sections, each correct answer receives 1 mark and the scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. Reading skills assessed include: reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail; understanding inferences and implied meaning; recognising a writer s opinions, attitudes and purpose; and following the development of an argument. Speaking The speaking test is a 3-part face-to-face oral interview with an examiner. Candidates are assessed on their performance according to the four criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, pronunciation. Speaking skills assessed include: the ability to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences and situations by answering a range of questions; the ability to speak at length on a given topic using appropriate language and organising ideas coherently the ability to express and justify opinions and to analyse, discuss and specu-

3 Listening The listening component consists of 4 sections, each correct answer receives 1 mark and the scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. Listening skills assessed include: understanding of main ideas and specific factual information; recognising opinions, attitudes and purpose of a speaker; following the development of an argument. Writing There are 2 tasks in the writing component where candidates are required to write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2. Candidates are assessed on their performance according to the four criteria: task achievement/response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy. In both tasks, candidates are assessed on their ability to write a response which is appropriate in terms of content, the organisation of ideas, and the accuracy and range of vocabulary and grammar. 4 Program Details Development and extension of 4 skills Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Brief revision of essential grammar elements that are relevant to your IELTS Tests. Weekly test practice and IELTS Test. Step-by-step detailed analysis of questions forms and strategies to answer these questions. Use and provision of support and supplementary materials to develop vocabulary and general knowledge. Essay marking from IELTS instructors to help you identify your weaknesses in IELTS Writing and how to correct them. Requirement You must spend at least 2 hours of self-study every day to finish your homework (IELTS Practice Test) You must put in sufficient effort to fix all the grammatical errors that the teacher points out to you. Because of time limitation, we cannot cover all grammatical lessons for you (but we do point out any specific grammatical errors you may have and provide you with materials and support to help your fix these errors). You must attend all the lessons as we will focus on the Strategies and help you with the techniques to do the exam faster and better. The teachers will not just give you a complete Test in the class, because it will waste your time in class. However, we will give you a segment of the test to illustrate the techniques/strategies that we are trying to teach you. We will guide you through each section of the exam and devote particular attention to individual needs and difficulties of each student.

9 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS) I 1. I am not available on Monday morning. Can I choose to learn the same skill on a different day/time? Yes, you can. We have classes in the morning (9:30-12:30pm), evening (6:30-9pm) and Sunday (9:30-3pm). You will need to discuss this with our administration before you enrol. 2. I already took the 2 weeks of the Weekday course. Can I extend to 3 weeks? Yes, you can. However, you need to inform our admin staff and pay for the remaining amount before you attend further classes at least 5 days before the course starts. You cannot attend any class without payment. 3. Is Sydney Language Solutions an IELTS Test Centre? Can I register here? We are not an IELTS test centre and therefore, you cannot register for an official IELTS Test with us. We only provide IELTS Preparation courses. For information about where to register for the IELTS test, please check the official IELTS website. 4. I took the IELTS test before and I got around band Will the training improve my bands? Yes, it will. But it also depends on the amount of effort and time that you put into the training. 5. Are all the teachers native speakers? All Speaking and Listening teachers are natives to the language. Our IELTS teachers are all highly qualified and experienced in teaching IELTS. 6. Do we get some hints for the test during the classes? Yes, you do. Our teachers will provide you with a lot of hints to complete the test successfully.

10 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS) II 7. I am having my test very soon (1-2 week time) and I need to practice. Can I make arrangements to join the ongoing class? It is advisable that you attend the whole course (3 weeks, 6 weeks, or 9 weeks depending on the class you choose). However, you can join for only 2-4 weeks but you should be aware that the short duration of training may also affect your results. 8. Do we have a lot of homework? Yes. You need to do a lot of Writing and Reading Homework at home as there is only a limited time in the class to provide you with the necessary skills and sample test segments to practice. 9. Do we learn 4 skills in one day? No, you will learn a single skill per day. The Speaking and Listening may be taught on the same day depending on the teachers and the number of students in the class. 10. Can we get a refund if we change your mind? You can get a refund if you withdraw your enrolment AT LEAST 7 DAYS before the course starts. If you withdraw between 1 to 7 days before the course starts, you will be charged $40 for administration fees. If the course has already started, we cannot refund your fee under any circumstances. 11. What support will I receive? You will receive at least 2 IELTS Practice Test (Reading) and many Writing Tests per week to practise in class and at home. In the class, teachers will also give many segments of Tests relevant to the strategies being taught. You will receive free IELTS Questions and Grammar tips published weekly on our Facebook page and blog.
