Key Contact for Clergy Terms of Service: Archdeacon of Berkshire. This role falls within the Clergy Terms of Service formally known as Common Tenure. The Archdeacon of Berkshire is the person designated by the Bishop of Oxford to issue the Statement of Particulars for the post holder. Accountability: Priests share with the Bishop in the oversight of the Church. Whilst, as an office holder, the individual is expected to lead and prioritise work in line with the purpose of the role, they are encouraged to inform the Archdeacon and the Churchwardens about any issues exceptional or otherwise that have the potential to affect ongoing delivery of ministry. 1 Vicar of The Cookhams - Role Description

3 SECTION 2: Context As a diocese we are committed to holistic mission, working through the framework of Living Faith for the Future. We have defined our purpose as to join with God in creating a caring, sustainable and growing Christian presence in every part of the Diocese of Oxford, enabling every Christian and every Christian community to live and share the love of God, seen in the life of Jesus Christ. Diocesan Context Within the Living Faith framework we are inviting every parish, benefice, Board and Committee to paint their own unique work of art using the colours of: Sustaining the Sacred Centre Making Disciples Making a Difference in the World Shaping Confident, Collaborative Leadership Creating Vibrant Christian Communities These priorities are supported centrally by resources, training, conferences, workshops, missioners and much more. We are inviting benefices and their priests to share a vision rather than demanding a response. We encourage a priest to have a ministerial interest beyond the benefice which is a personal specialism and may be made available to the wider church - a sixth day ministry. 4 SECTION 2: Context Deanery Context The Diocese is currently going through a Mission Action Planning process, and an initial Deanery Mission Action Plan has been considered by the Archdeaconry Mission and Pastoral Committee. In relation to The Cookhams the plan made the case for an increase of stipendiary allocation from the current 1.5 to 2.0, primarily on the basis of time spent by the previous incumbent in the role of Area Dean. Whilst this is clearly now subject to further discussion, the plan sets out a requirement to keep the resources in The Cookhams at a level at least equal to its current allocation for the next 5 years. The Benefice of the Cookhams is the largest ministry unit in the Maidenhead & Windsor Deanery with around 16% of the electoral roll and contributing around 18% of the Deanery s total diocesan share. 3 Vicar of The Cookhams - Role Description

To exercise the cure of souls shared with the bishop in The Benefice of The Cookhams in collaboration with colleagues including the praying of the Daily Office, the administration of the sacraments and preaching. General B. To have regard to the calling and responsibilities of the clergy (as described in the Canons, the Ordinal, the Code of Professional Conduct for the Clergy) and other relevant legislation including:- bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care. instructing the parishioners in the Christian faith preparing candidates for confirmation diligently visiting the parishioners of the benefice, particularly those who are sick and infirm providing spiritual counsel and advice. consulting with the parochial church council on matters of general concern and importance to the benefice bringing the needs of the world before God in intercession calling your hearers to repentance and declaring in Christ's name the absolution and forgiveness of their sins blessing people in God s name preparing people for their death discerning and fostering the gifts of all God s people being faithful in prayer, expectant and watchful for the signs of God s presence, as he reveals his kingdom among us C. 6 Section 3: Role Purpose and Key Responsibilities Specific Responsibilities in the Benefice Mission and Outreach To engage widely and deeply with the community and to lead others to do so. To continue the work with the schools, both the Church schools and others, and to develop the ministry with children. To lead the Churches and their members to reach outwards into the community. Leadership and working collaboratively To encourage vocational and spiritual development among the clergy and lay community. To develop open and welcoming attitudes within the Church and an inclusive reputation across the wider community. To collaborate effectively with the Ministry Team, lay and ordained, and to delegate effectively where possible. Worship and preaching To maintain the high standard of traditional sacramental worship and preaching and additionally to develop other forms of worship for the wider community To encourage Prayer and Study Groups and to support pilgrimages, quiet and study days, to lead us into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and help us to be his disciples To offer joint services for the Parishes to celebrate our common life and to share in our mission together. 5 Vicar of The Cookhams - Role Description

7 Section 3: Role Purpose and Key Responsibilities Pastoral Care To lead the development of pastoral care within the Benefice, stretching and growing the current pastoral arrangements. To encourage and empower others to make Church events outreach opportunities and to be fully inclusive of all people within the community. To encourage Church members to act as leaders for community initiatives. Stewardship and benefice organisation To provide leadership to the existing benefice organisation, identifying where we work best together and best separately, challenging and improving organisation. To oversee and lead Succession Planning of clergy, officers and congregations. To implement a practical and consensus based framework for management of the benefice finances, identifying the balance between Buildings and Mission. Personal development and spirituality To have realistic and practical understandings regarding the need for continued spiritual and theological self-care i.e. regular established days off, quiet days, retreats, cell groups, etc. Vicar of The Cookhams - Role Description 6

8 Section 3: Role Purpose and Key Responsibilities Leadership Roles within the Benefice and the Community The Vicar is the chair of the Ministry Team. The Vicar is Chair of both PCCs. The Vicar chairs the Standing Committees of both PCCs. The Vicar is responsible for the scheduling and apportionment of duties of the clergy and LLMs related to the holding of services and pastoral care duties. The sense of community in The Cookhams is very strong, and the Vicar will be expected to ensure that the church is part of that community, has its say and plays an active role in it. We see our churches as being very much part of the wider community, not just the Christian one. The Vicar of the Benefice also holds the following posts:- Trustee of The King s Hall Trust (which houses the Stanley Spencer Collection) Trustee of Pinder Hall (the community hall in Cookham Rise) Custodial Trustee of Elizabeth House (Day Centre for the over 60s) Chairman of Cookham Voluntary Services Trustee of the land on which Cookham Dean School stands Governor of Cookham Dean Voluntary Aided Primary School Other Requirements Car Driver The geography of the benefice means that the ability to drive is essential.
