This manual applies to the Sweex Wireless LAN USB 2.0 Adaptor 140 Nitro XM, the Sweex Wireless LAN PCI Card 140 Nitro XM and the Sweex Wireless LAN PC Card 140 Nitro XM. This USB adaptor or wireless network card easily allows you to set up a wireless network in no time at all. This USB adaptor or wireless network card complies with all international standards for wireless communication such as IEEE b, IEEE g and CE. This wireless LAN product is compatible with all major operating systems and the Nitro XM-technology ensures a data transfer speed almost twice as high as the current g standard. In addition, products which support 140 Mbps, can communicate directly with each other via the Direct Link option, in order to optimize the data transfer speed. Depending on conditions, this product has a wireless range of up to 30 metres indoors and 50 metres outdoors. For security reasons, the USB adaptor or wireless network card is compatible with WEP bit protocol and WPA bit protocol, which means that data is encrypted before it is transmitted. We advise you to first read this manual carefully to ensure the correct operation of this product. Insert the supplied CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. An options screen will start automatically. In this menu select the first option Install software PC/PCI Card or Install software USB and click on open. If the start screen does not appear automatically, click the Start button and then select Run. Type X:\setup.exe in the window that appears (where X is the letter of your CD-ROM drive). You may not have enough rights under Windows 2000 to install drivers and software. If this is the case, please contact your system administrator. You will need administrator rights to install new hardware and software. Installation procedure USB 2.0 Adapter Make sure that the software for the USB-adaptor is installed. For optimum performance we recommend that you place the USB-adaptor in a free USB 2.0 slot. A message will appear on the screen within a few seconds stating that new hardware has been found. Click on Next to continue. LEDs The USB adaptor has 1 LED: ACT (Activity), which will flash yellow if data is being transferred. Installation The installation depends on the operating system you are using. This manual describes installation for the following operating systems: Windows 98SE Windows 2000 Windows XP (Home and Professional) Important! Developments in hardware and software are extremely rapid so we advise you to ensure that your operating system is up-to-date before commencing installation. You can do this very easily by starting Internet Explorer and selecting Windows Update in the Tools menu. Installation procedure PCI card Take the following precautions before installing the hardware: Ensure that the software for the PCI card is installed. Ensure the PC is turned off and is not connected to the power supply Also disconnect the printer and the monitor cable, as they have their own power supply, so that you are certain that there is no voltage on the PC. Then unscrew the computer case. Once you have unscrewed the computer case, make sure you discharge any static electricity from yourself by touching a (bare) central heating pipe or unlagged water pipe. Take care not to use a magnetic screwdriver. Once again, touch the metal frame of the PC case. Avoid touching any contact points in the PC, PCI card or memory. Find a free PCI slot and remove the metal blanking plate inside the relevant slot in the computer case. It may be slightly difficult to insert the card into the PCI slot. If this happens, do not use force but try another free slot. Once the card has been inserted successfully, check that all the other cards are still inserted in their PCI slots correctly. Sometimes when inserting a PCI card, the other PCI cards are moved upwards causing the relevant card or even the entire PC to stop working. Next, replace the computer case cover and correctly reconnect all cables that were removed from the PC. Now switch the PC back on. 4 5

3 Right click on NB g Wireless LAN Cardbus Adapter (3886) and select Properties. Then click on the Advanced tab. Never use the PCI card without the aerial. This prevents any damage to the card. LED The PCI card has 1 LED: ACT (Activity), which will flash green if data is being transferred. Installation procedure PC card Make sure that the software for the PC card is installed. Insert the PC card in a free PCMCIA slot. A message will appear on the screen within a few seconds stating that new hardware has been found. Click on Next to continue. Select Compression and set the value to On. Carry out these steps for Concatenation, Direct Link, Nitro Mode and PiggyBack. Click on OK and close the menu. By doing the above you install the maximum performance at 140 Mbps. Security Security can be set at 64 or 128-bit WEP encryption or WPA (WiFi Protected Access) can be selected. LED The PCI card has 2 LEDs: Link, which will burn green when connected to the network. ACT (Activity), which will flash yellow if data is being transferred. Configure Nitro XM mode For Windows 2000 and Windows XP click on Start and go to Run. Fill in: devmgmt.msc here and press enter. You will now come to the device manager. Click on the + for network adaptor. You will now see several devices below this, including the NB g Wireless LAN Cardbus Adapter (3886). Installation of WEP encryption During installation an icon was created on the desktop. Double click on this icon IEEE g Wireless LAN Utility Before the new encryption codes are configured, the new encryption codes must be set in the router first. If the router already has encryption codes, these codes can be filled in for the new wireless product. Make sure that the WEP settings for the wireless LAN product are identical to those of the WEP settings of the router to be used. For Windows 98SE, right click on My Computer, select Properties and then select the Device Manager tab. 6 7

4 Network Key For 64 bit, you have to fill in 10 characters, and for 128 bit, you have to fill in 26 characters. Random numbers from 0 up to and including 9 and letters from A up to and including F can be used. The selected combination forms the Network Key. Wireless network configuration with Windows 98SE and 2000 If you configure the wireless network with the supplied software, please refer to the comprehensive English-language manual in the CD-ROM. Installation of WPA Before the wireless LAN product encryption codes are configured, the new encryption codes must be set in the router first. If the router already has encryption codes, these codes can be filled in for the new wireless product. Double click on the IEEE g Wireless LAN Utility shortcut on the desktop. This shortcut can also be found by pressing Start and then Programs before selecting IEEE g Wireless LAN Utility. Next, click on IEEE g Wireless LAN Utility. The following screen appears: Set the Authentication Mode to Shared Key or Open. Set the Encryption Mode to WEP. For Key Index select the number 1 and then set the "Key Length" to 64 bit or 128 bit. Fill in the selected Network Key and then repeat this for Confirm Network Key. Then press OK. Wireless network configuration with Windows XP utility If the wireless network is configured with Windows XP configuration software (XP Zero Configuration), remove the check mark from: "the key is provided for me automatically. Select WEP under Data Encryption. Enter the network key (encryption code) that matches the code in the router. Check Security Enabled and click on Config. 8 9

5 The window below is opened: Select the WPA-PSK option under Authentication Mode. Select AES under Encryption Mode. Under Network Key, fill in the code which is installed for the Network Key of the router used. Confirm the code and press OK. The wireless network is now secure. Warranty All articles that are carried under the name Sweex have a 3-year term of guarantee. Only the Sweex Digital photo and video cameras have a 2- year term of guarantee. We do not provide support or warranty for the supplied software or (rechargeable) batteries.
