Feedback from the posters What is a research poster for? What should be included Design principles Before you print! Competition feedback Summary 2

What is a research poster? A static visual A demonstration Designed to be presentation to tool for a short noticed! communicate oral presentation your research. or discussion. Your poster should communicate your message on its own But This does not mean you can clear off! Be prepared to give a short talk and answer questions in a poster session. So, make sure you have an interesting title and a strong design that supports what you are saying. 3

What should be included? Title including: the people involved in the work and their affiliation. Summary of what you have set out to do, how you have done it, the key findings and main results. Introduction outlining the project s aims and objectives. Methodology explain the techniques and procedures used, also state and justify any assumptions, so that your results can be viewed in the proper context. Results Conclusion Further Work includes recommendations on how the work could be progressed or other tests that could be applied 4

Poster design - text Keep It Stupidly Simple Make text as large as possible. Short sentences. Short paragraphs with spaces between. Bullet points are good! 5

Poster design Fonts The simplest fonts are the easiest to read, for example: Arial Verdana These fonts do not have serifs or embellishments that make them more Calibri Century Gothic Lucida Sans difficult to read but check that your organisation does not have an in-house style. Choose on font and stick to it throughout your poster. To emphasise use: size, CAPITALS, bold, italics, colour, or underline. 6

Poster design colour can Create an impression Decide on a colour theme with two or three colours. 7

Poster design - backgrounds Soft colours like pastels, and greys or subdued photographs work well as a background Your text and graphics might stand out better in a box than on the background. Stronger colours can be used around the edges - or to separate sections. 8

Graphics on a poster A picture is worth a thousand words, and good graphics will attract people to your poster. But there are rules: 1. They should be relevant and support the text. 2. Figures should be numbered for so that they can be easily identified from your text. 3. They should be large and simple. 4. Clearly label the axes and data on graphs avoid separate legends. 9

Before you print! Check to find out any specific rules for the event you are making your poster for. Remove any acronyms or abbreviations. Get your supervisor to check it is factually correct and complies with your University s design policies. Ask someone you trust to tell you the truth what they think of your design, and how easy it is to understand. 10

(comments from the feedback cards) 11

Text and images Concise - does not overload with info coordinator Relevant and interesting images - sufficient images to keep reader from tiring - good figures to display results - Flows without text 12

Attractive Design - Eye-catching - Innovative - visual: draws the user in coordinator - good use of colour - good background Well structured - simple layout - good figures to display results 13

good analysis coordinator appropriately presented innovative clearly described 14

What we liked 15

The original presentation contained only the Competition feedback and summary sections used in a feedback session for research posters submitted to the First Gfg 2 Summer School in August Following requests for more general advice, I have added the sections: What is a research poster for?, What should be included, Design principles, and Before you print!. 16
