For technical support: Call the IBM Support Center at 800-IBM-SERV ( ) or Request technical information via the Web site at Overview The Nortel 1/10 Gb Uplink Ethernet Switch Module for BladeCenter is a new switch option that enables administrators to offer full Layer 2 and 3 switching and routing capability with combined 1 Gb and 10 Gb uplinks in a BladeCenter chassis. Such consolidation simplifies the data center infrastructure and helps reduce the number of discrete devices, management consoles, and management systems. In addition, the next-generation switch module hardware is capable of supporting IPv6 Layer 3 frame forwarding protocols via a future firmware upgrade. The new module delivers port flexibility, efficient traffic management, increased uplink bandwidth, and strong Ethernet switching price/performance. The 1/10 Gb Uplink Ethernet Switch Module uses switching technology in an integrated switch module design. 2 A maximum of four Nortel 1/10 Gb Uplink Ethernet Switch modules can reside in the I/O module bays of the BladeCenter E and BladeCenter T chassis. A maximum of six switch modules can reside in the I/O module bays for the BladeCenter H and BladeCenter HT chassis when the optional Multiswitch Interconnect Module is installed. Up to three switch modules are supported in the BladeCenter S chassis. The modules can be hot-plugged into the BladeCenter chassis without disrupting normal operations. The switch connects to the server blades via the internal GbE interfaces (server ports) over the BladeCenter mid-plane. It supplies nine external Ethernet interfaces for outside communication. This includes three 10 GbE SFP+ ports and six 1 Gb RJ45 ports. Each 10 GbE SFP+ port requires an optional pluggable SFP+ transceiver. You can manage the 1/10 Gb uplink Ethernet switch through two internal 100 Mbps ports for communication to the BladeCenter management module, using any of the internal or external data ports or through an external serial port. 10 GbE 850 nm (SR) fiber SFP+ transceiver The 10 GbE 850 nm fiber SFP+ transceiver for BladeCenter is a new high-speed transceiver designed for short range transmission. It is specially qualified and tested to work with the Nortel 1/10 Gb Uplink Ethernet Switch Module, the next-generation BladeCenter Ethernet switch. In addition to the Layer 2 switching capabilities, this switch supports the expanded capabilities of Layer 3 routing. A maximum of four Nortel 1/10 Gb Uplink Ethernet Switch modules can reside in the I/O module bays of the BladeCenter E and BladeCenter T chassis. A maximum of six switch modules can reside in the I/O module bays for the BladeCenter H and BladeCenter HT chassis when the optional Multiswitch Interconnect Module is installed. Full Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing enable flexible in-chassis, traffic management and sophisticated security. The Nortel 1/10 Uplink Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module delivers full Layer 2 switching with availability capabilities like advanced spanning tree protocols, Link Aggregation Control, Cisco EtherChannel, and 802.1Q VLANs and application delivery and performance features such as granular quality of service (for example, Differentiated Services Code Point 802.1p), and IGMP snooping or relay, multicast, and so on. In particular, the switch module supports up to 16,384 MAC addresses, 4,096 address resolution protocol (ARP) entries, and up to 2,048 dynamic route entries to ensure a high level of support for a number of users. 3 or disabled on a per port basis. Multiple instances of STP are supported (for example 32 STP groups). Virtual (VLAN) support includes 802.1Q tagged VLANs and support for IEEE on nine external ports for up to three static trunk groups. Adding full Layer 3 routing to the integrated switch module delivers more power, flexibility, and security capabilities to the BladeCenter system. You can manage network traffic more efficiently with the integrated switch module. You can also contain broadcast traffic in the blade server by placing the 14 server blades on different subnets. This enables communication between each without using the bandwidth of the external ports to send traffic to and from an external L3 device. Security features help deliver added protection for switch configuration data. Packet filtering helps secure and segment sensitive traffic or network access. Support for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPv3), Secure Shell (SSHv2), and HTTPS helps supply protection for sensitive switch configuration data. Multilevel access and defined access policies help secure the switch against unauthorized management access. Support for RADIUS, LDAP, and TACACS+ gives enterprises the freedom to use current security databases. Layer 3 filtering (IP, application type, and so on) at line rate in the chassis enhances security and simplifies provisioning. The risk of traffic finding a route to a denied destination is reduced if Layer 3 routing is contained in the switch module in the chassis. Without Layer 3 filtering, several external switches might need configuration to filter traffic to limit access between one server blade and another if the traffic flows through upstream devices. Several routing standards are supported: Routing Information Protocol Version 1 (RIPv1), and Version 2 (RIPv2) Border Gateway Protocol Version 4 (BGPv4) Open Shortest Path First Version 2 (OSPFv2) Maximum bandwidth and network flexibility are achieved with uplink support for three 10 Gb and six 1 Gb ports per switch. In addition, the switch hardware will support a wide range of IPv6 protocols in the future with an optional firmware upgrade. The Nortel 1/10 Uplink Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module is qualified and tested to route, filter, and queue traffic so that no data is lost, dropped, or delayed. Applications get the bandwidth they need, when they need it, with little or no delay or jitter. Even with all the value that an integrated switch module can offer, a BladeCenter server can have its performance limited if the switch module cannot enable adequate ingress and egress bandwidth. The Nortel 1/10 Uplink Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module is the only BladeCenter switch module that offers three 10 Gb and six 1 Gb ports per switch for maximum throughput. It supports full Layer 2 through Layer 3 wire-speed packet forwarding for all connections. In addition, the flexibility of both copper and fiber ports allow for optimized use in hybrid installations or where one switching infrastructure is more economical. High-availability support and field proven resiliency are built in at both Layer 2 and Layer 3 in the Nortel 1/10 Uplink Gigabit Ethernet to help reduce single points of failure when enabling reliability and performance of the network. At Layer 2, the following are supported: Link Aggregation Control (802.3) Rapid spanning tree Cisco UplinkFast and PortFast 802.1Q VLANs Broadcast storm control Native link failover with NIC teaming At Layer 3, a special extended version of Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) enables multiple 1/10 Gb Uplink Ethernet Switch Modules to process traffic in an active-active configuration. With this feature, all switches in the VRRP group concurrently process traffic, enabling maximum switch performance. It helps provide failover support in the unlikely event of a failure.
