19 Why child marriage? Around 1 in 3 (approximately 70 million) young women aged in developing countries married before the age of 18 One third of marrying before 15 years of age Early consensual unions common Lower education levels Higher infant and maternal mortality rates Consequences of child marriage Limited opportunities Increased risk of STIs, HIV Increased risk of being a victim of abuse and violence

20 Why Girls Education? Transformative effect Smaller families Lower maternal mortality Healthier children, more likely to go to school Better able to protect selves and children from malnutrition, HIV and AIDS, trafficking and sexual exploitation Less likely to marry as a child It s not just about addressing gender disparities It s about power relations
