2 TOPIC PROGRAM/SERVICE CONTACT GENERAL HEALTH INFORMATION BREASTFEEDING COMMUNICABLE DISEASE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH Toll Free Prenatal Postpartum Newborns Child & Babytalk Phone Line Public health nurses answer prenatal questions such as alcohol and substance use in pregnancy, infant and childcare questions, and provide resources on family health issues. Babytalk Drop-ins Drop-ins across the KFL&A area offer parents a chance to meet with a public health nurse and sometimes a registered dietitian to receive resources and support. Topics include: growth and development, breastfeeding, parenting, healthy pregnancies, nutrition, injury prevention, community resources and more. Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) This home visiting program is for pregnant women and families with children from birth to transition to school. Parents and families referred to HBHC are initially screened. Screening provides opportunities for early identification and intervention for families through home visiting, service coordination, and referrals to services to support healthy child development. Support is provided by public health nurses and family home visitors. Breastfeeding Buddies Experienced volunteers who have breastfed provide telephone support to mothers during their first few months of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding Clinic Parents can meet with a public health nurse/lactation consultant for one-to-one breastfeeding support, education and reassurance. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class Our free prenatal breastfeeding class is offered regularly throughout the year. Taught by a public health nurse/lactation consultant, this class provides mothers and their partners the information they need to breastfeed their baby. General Information Public health nurses and an infection control practitioner answer questions about infectious diseases, childhood illnesses and infection control. Lyme Disease KFL&A Public Health has developed an algorithm for prophylaxis for Lyme disease in the KFL&A area for an attached black-legged tick. The reverse side of the algorithm has treatment guidelines for suspected Lyme Disease. Physicians Reporting Line This 24 hour line is for the mandatory reporting of over 50 communicable diseases. TB Skin Testing TB skin testing is only performed at KFL&A Public Health for the contacts of a person with active TB. It is a free service. Public health inspectors provide information on indoor air quality, food safety, private sewage system inspection, well water testing, beach closures, and animal bites. By law, animal exposures are to be reported. Public health inspectors provide premise inspections and follow-up on complaints regarding personal services (e.g. tattoo studios, indoor tanning beds), swimming pools, daycare and food premises. ext ext. 1248

3 Prenatal Postpartum Newborns HEALTHY EATING HEALTHY EATING HEARING IMMUNIZATION PRENATAL AND PERINATAL Dial-a-Dietitian Dial-a-Dietitian is a free nutrition information telephone service. Registered dietitians answer questions on a wide range of nutrition-related topics. Good Food Box (GFB) The Good Food Box (GFB) is a non-profit fresh vegetables and fruit distribution system. Prices are $5.00, $10.00 or $ Call the Dial-a-Dietitian line to find out the host site closest to you. Introducing Solid Foods to Your Baby This free class facilitated by a Registered Dietitian focuses on introducing solid foods to babies and answers common questions parents have about baby s first foods. Parents also learn how to make baby food. Infant Hearing Program (IHP) IHP offers newborn hearing screening to identify hearing loss, follow-up hearing screening for children at risk of hearing loss, and provides a range of support services for children identified with permanent hearing loss including audiology services, family support, and communication development services. Immunization Info Line Questions are answered about immunization, vaccine information, immunization records and schedules, adverse reactions, dates and locations of immunization and influenza clinics. Immunization Reporting Line Physicians should encourage parents to report all childhood immunizations to this line. Travel Clinic Call this line for one-on-one visits with well-informed travel nurses. No travel or medical advice will be given by phone; all travelers must make appointments. All non-government funded vaccines will be given by appointment only. There is a fee for all travel consultations and travel vaccines. Food for You Food for Two Food for You, Food for Two is a free program for pregnant women. Each week participants meet other new parents, prepare food and eat together. Participants receive health information from a Public Health Nurse and a Registered Dietitian. Groceries and childcare are provided and transportation may be available. Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) Public health nurses assess clients and provide information and support to promote a healthy pregnancy and baby. Public health nurses screen new mothers in hospital and provide information on infant care, self-care, parenting, and where to access community supports and services. Clients who may require more support during or after pregnancy will be offered our home visiting program. Online Prenatal Classes The Gift of Motherhood interactive online education program is an alternative to in-person classes. The classes contain the same content as the in-person program. Prenatal Classes These classes help families have a healthy pregnancy, a healthy birth experience, and a healthy baby. 4 Prenatal Postpartum Newborns SPEECH & LANGUAGE TOBACCO VISION VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS Early Expressions Early Expressions is a system of partner agencies that provides speech and language services to preschool children living in the KFL&A area. Early Expressions will accept self-and physician referrals for children not yet eligible for senior kindergarten. Take Control Baby Steps If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, breastfeeding, or have recently had a baby,you and your partner are eligible for support to become tobacco free. Access to NRT may be available. Tobacco Information Line Whether you re trying to quit, supporting someone who is quitting, trying to understand smoke-free laws, or looking for information, the Tobacco Information line can help. Blind-Low Vision (BLV) BLV offers family support and early childhood intervention services for babies and young children identified by an ophthalmologist as blind or low vision. Volunteering is associated with better health. It offers a connection between people and causes they care about. It builds relationships and allows community outcomes and personal goals to be met through participation. KFL&A Public Health has well developed volunteer programs. Volunteer opportunities include: Breastfeeding Buddies, Community Food Advisors, Falls Prevention Ambassadors, Walk On volunteering, youth engagement and more. ext ext. 1159

Sexual Health Clinic KFL&A Public Health offers confidential and non-judgmental sexual health services through our sexual health clinic located at 221 Portsmouth Avenue. Call for clinic times. Sexual Health Teen Clinics Sexual Health Services for teens are offered every second Monday 12:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. Appointments are required. As well, several local secondary schools provide clinic services within the school. Sexual Health Info Line This confidential phone line provides information about contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and access to sexual health services.
