4 Jesus was a Man Born of a woman In the time of Caesar Augustus In the town of Bethlehem With an ancestry descended from Adam, Abraham, Judah, and David With brothers and sisters He ate and got thirsty Slept Wept and mourned Got angry Suffered death

5 Why is it so important that the Son of God become the Son of Man? A holy God cannot simply ignore sin or He would cease to be a holy God. Fallen mankind has incurred an enormous debt of sin that he has no means to repay. Therefore a perfect substitute was required, an acceptable sacrifice to satisfy the just demands of God. The Redeemer of mankind must be both human and divine, for one who is only deity could not suffer death, and one who is only human could not overcome death.

6 Son of Man Hebrews 2:17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

7 A profound Mystery: Son of God & Son of Man Philippians 2:5-8 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

8 OT Foretold His Coming as a Man Gen. 3:15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. Mic. 5:2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. Jer. 23:5 Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

9 OT Foretold His Coming as a Man Isaiah 9:6-7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom,to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

10 OT Foretold of His Kingdom Daniel 7:13-14 I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

11 He came as the Second Adam, Adam as he was created to be.

12 The First Man, Adam Man was created to reflect God s glory, to fellowship with God, and to enjoy His presence. God gave Adam authority over the earth, but it wasn t full autonomy. Man was to implement God s will as a steward of God s authority. But the first man, Adam, when tempted, rebelled by choosing his own way and authority, not God s. Treason=Death Sin entered and destroyed man s perfect fellowship with God, with creation, and with other human beings. Man s way led to many competing authorities, chaos, destruction and death.

13 The Second Adam The Son of God came in the flesh as the Son of Man. Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of Man over 50 times in the gospels. He reflected God s glory, fellowshipped with God, and enjoyed His presence. He always and only obeyed God. When tempted, He did not sin. He referred to God s authority. He subdued and ruled over the creation. He was the perfect Human Being. Because He was obedient even unto death, many will be made righteous and death destroyed. (Romans 5:19; I Corinthians 15:26; Hebrews 2:14)

14 2 Corinthians 5:15 makes it clear that human beings were never meant to live for themselves. 2Corinthians 5:15 he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

15 Son of Man Romans 8:3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, Hebrews 2:14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,

16 The Son of God became the Son of Man so that the sons of men might become the sons of God!

17 Sons of God When we confess with our mouth and believe in our hearts that Jesus is the Son of God, we share in the love that the Father has for the Son. The Father declares that we are adopted sons and daughters.

18 Sons of God Gal. 4:4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. Gal. 4:5 God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. Gal. 4:6 And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, Abba, Father. Gal. 4:7 Now you are no longer a slave but God s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. (NLT)

19 Adopted as God s Children Romans 8:15...you received God s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, Abba, Father. (NLT) Rom. 8:23...we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. (NLT)

20 Adopted as God s Children Ephesians 1:5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. (NLT)

21 1John 3:2 Dear friends, we are already God s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. (NLT) Revelation 21:7 All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children. (NLT)

22 Romans 8:17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. (NLT) Romans 8:29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (NLT)

23 Sons of God Jesus as the Son of Man lived with an unbroken connection to the Father. AND because we have been declared the sons (daughters) of God and are united to Him through the Holy Spirit, we can enjoy this same intimate connection to our Father in heaven.

25 Matt. 26:64 Jesus replied,.... in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven. This is the One Who is our Brother and shares His inheritance with us!

26 Lord, Don t let me be so blinded with me and mine, that I fail to see You. For it s only when my eyes see Your beauty, and my heart is filled with Your glory that I ll quit seeking identity, meaning, satisfaction, purpose, fulfillment, and life where it can t be found. So I would pray this simple prayer, Please touch me by Your grace so that there ll never be a day where I haven t somehow, someway gazed upon Your beauty.
