The National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain Association unites patients, policy makers, and healthcare, medical, and scientific communities to transform lives through visionary support, advocacy, research, and education of fibromyalgia and chronic pain illnesses. Your partner in tackling fibromyalgia & chronic pain.
Employers Pay the Price for Chronic Pain in the Workplace
Definition Acute pain is a normal sensation that alerts us to possible injury Chronic pain is different it persists and can last for weeks, months or years Often accompanied by other health problems, including: Fatigue Sleep disturbance Lack of appetite Mood changes
DID YOU KNOW? Pain is the number one cause of adult disability in the U.S. Pain costs $294 billion annually in lost workdays, medical expenses, and other benefit costs. Lost productive time from common pain conditions among active U.S. workers cost an estimated $61.2 billion annually, largely due to reduced performance while at work. Thirteen percent of the total workforce experienced a loss in productive time during a two-week period due to a common pain condition, including headache, back pain, arthritis, and musculoskeletal pain.
Employer Concerns Presenteeism An employee shows up to work, but is not functioning optimally Reasons, including: Pain Medication side effects, including opioids Brain fog Fatigue Other
Employer Concerns Absenteeism: An employee does not show up to work due to pain or other reasons Effective loss of investment in employee Lack of productivity How is employee morale affected, especially if other employees are expected to pick up the slack?
Chronic Pain and YOUR Business - Decrease in employee productivity + Missed workdays + Increase in medical and benefits expenditures LOST REVENUE
Employers: Take Action Take steps to support a healthy environment if you take interest in health and wellness, employees are more likely to show an interest Become educated on appropriate treatment modalities to manage chronic pain, including chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, etc. Consider an onsite corporate health clinic
Personal Experience In December 2005, I woke up from hysterectomy surgery and had electrifying pain throughout my entire body In 2006, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia What is FIBROMYALGIA? Are there helpful treatment modalities?

Evidence-Based Treatment: Chiropractic Care + + Doctors of chiropractic receive a minimum of seven years of higher level and clinical patient education DCs are well-trained and positioned as the first option for low back pain + Drug-free, non-invasive, evidence-based treatments + Effective back and general neuro-musculoskeletal pain management
Evidence-Based Treatment: In relation to work-related nonspecific low back pain, chiropractic care is associated with: A lower disability recurrence, when compared to treatment by other medical interventions Less use of opioids Fewer surgeries Lower medical expenses Better outcomes Chiropractic Care Higher patient satisfaction
Evidence-Based Treatment: Chiropractic Care A 2010 study performed on Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee s fully insured population found that after risk adjusting each patient s costs, episodes of care initiated with a doctor of chiropractic were 20 percent less expensive than episodes initiated with an MD.
Onsite Corporate Health Clinics Onsite corporate health clinics address a myriad of challenges including: Control and reduce health care costs Enhance access to primary care Function as a medical home for employees and their dependents
Employer Receptivity to Onsite Clinics Employers increasingly consider on-site corporate health clinics as a vital component of corporate health and wellness strategies that aim to: Measurably improve employee productivity Integrate wellness initiatives Provide an employment benefit comparable to other employers In some cases, these clinics result in better control of corporate health care expenditures through on-site screening for chronic diseases and active condition management. Foundation for Chiropractic Progress latest white paper, Growing Role of Doctors of Chiropractic in Onsite Corporate Health Clinics
Future Growth Experts predict that onsite corporate health clinics will continue to gain popularity and grow by percent as a result of their ability to address health conditions that are both prevalent and costly.
Tool-Kit Interested in maximizing profits, and increasing worker productivity and well-being? Tool-kit components I am happy to discuss the framework of a tool-kit development, and how you can implement this tool-kit in your workplace.
Conclusion Chronic pain is a serious and growing problem Employers: Actively engage your employees and provide meaningful solutions to yield higher productivity and healthy bottom lines
