1 What is a Solar Geyser? SOLO-85 Solar Geyser Information Document. A Solar geyser is a unit used to heat water from the sun. It does not use any electricity as a conventional electrical geyser does. It relies purely on the sun s energy to heat the water. What does a standard Solar Geyser consist of? A standard Solar Geyser is made up of various Parts. 1.) A round metal tank which holds the water. 2.) Solar Panels that have pipes in them that heat the water up and circulate the water around in the tank as it is heated up. This is called the collector. 3.) Sometimes the Solar Panels maybe Glass tubes called Vacuum Tubes, this is also known as the collector part of the geyser.

2 What is the SOLO-85 Solar Water Geyser and how does it differ from the conventional Solar Geyser? The Solo-85 Geyser is a Hybrid Geyser. This means that there is only one part to it and it comprises the Geyser Tank and the Solar Collector in one unit. This is different from the conventional Solar System whereby the Collector, (the unit used to heat the water), and the Water Tank is separate. Collector Frame Tank What types of accessories are available for the SOLO-85? It doesn t matter what type of installation is done using the SOLO-85, the geyser remains the same. The geyser is the same for all types of installation, only the accessories change. The Accessories available are as follows. 1.) Basic installation Kit.

3 2.) Retrofit installation Kit. 3.) Roof or Wall Frame. 4.) Frame Legs, (Manual feed only). 5.) Tile Roof Hooks. 6.) Ibr or Corrugated Roof Hooks.

4 What types of Installations are there for the SOLO-85 Geyser? There are four different types of Installations for the Solo-85 1.) Manual Feed. Accessories Required: 1.) 2 x Taps with a ¾ male thread. 2.) A funnel to fill the geyser. 3.) A SOLO Frame with Legs. 4.) Frame extended LEGS. 5.) 2 X L shape 25mm pipe The manual feed installation comprises of the SOLO-85 Geyser which is fed manually with a Bucket. A funnel is attached to the Top right hand inlet of the SOLO-85 and a tap is attached to the center left and the bottom left of the SOLO-85. The geyser is filled up with cold water through the funnel and the hot water is taken out through the Tap. An Air pipe is attached to the Top Left Hand side of the SOLO-85. The water is drawn of after a 2-3 hours of sun exposure from the center tap first. If the geyser is left for a 1-2 hours more the hot water can be drawn from the bottom tap. If the SOLO-85 is refilled after water is drawn from the center tap, the water needs to heat again which will take 2-3 hours of good sun exposure.

5 2.) Gravity Feed. Accessories Required: 1.) A SOLO Frame if Floor or Flat Roof Mounted. 2.) A Basic Installation Kit if the water system uses pumps to increase pressure. 3.) Tile roof hooks if the geyser is mounted on a tile roof. 4.) IBR or corrugated Roof hooks if the geyser is mounted on an IBR or corrugated roof. This installation is used with a JOJO tank connection. The JOJO tank is connected to the SOLO-85 geyser s cold water inlet and feeds the geyser with cold water. The hot water is then either fed to the building from the hot water outlet of the geyser or a tap may be connected to the hot water outlet of the geyser. IT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT IF PUMPS ARE USED ON A JOJO TANK TO INCREASE THE PRESSURE OF THE GRAVITY FEED JOJO, A BASIC INSTALLATION KIT MUST BE USED. If the cold water pressure is fed into the building at a higher pressure than 4 bar, a PRV must also be inserted into the cold water feed to the building or else there will be a pressure imbalance, which will prevent the Hot water from coming out of the SOLO-85.

6 3.) Basic Installation. Accessories Required: 1.) A BASIC Installation KIT. 2.) A SOLO Frame if Floor or Flat Roof Mounted. 3.) Tile roof hooks if the geyser is mounted on a tile roof. 4.) IBR or corrugated Roof hooks if the geyser is mounted on an IBR or corrugated roof. This installation is NOT used when the SOLO-85 is being used to PRE-FEED an existing electric geyser. The basic installation comprises a SOLO-85 Geyser and a BASIC Installation Kit. The BASIC Kit comprises the following: 1.) Pressure Reducing Valve. 2.) 200 Kpa Temperature / Pressure Valve. 3.) Tempering Valve (Mixing Valve). 4.) Vacuum Breaker. 5.) Copper piping and connections. The basic installation takes the cold water in through the pressure reducing valve and into the SOLO-85. It also has a connection to the Tempering Valve. The Hot water outlet of the SOLO-85 also connects to the tempering valve. The tempering valve mixes the cold water inlet and the hot water outlet together, regulating the outlet water temperature to 50º Celsius. The vacuum breaker is used to keep air out of the system. The T.P. valve is a safety valve that is set at 200 Kpa (Pressure) and 85º Celsius (Temperature). This valve will release water from the geyser if the pressure gets above 3 Bar or the temperature is above 85º Celsius.

7 5.) Retrofit Installation. Accessories Required: 1.) A RETROFIT Installation KIT. 2.) A SOLO Frame if Floor or Flat Roof Mounted. 3.) Tile roof hooks if the geyser is mounted on a tile roof. 4.) IBR or corrugated Roof hooks if the geyser is mounted on an IBR or corrugated roof. Retrofit Plumbing Kit (Copper ) 1 Set Main Components 15mm Copper 0.12 m 22mm Copper (9 X 1.1m) 9.9 m 1/2" nuts + ferrule 22mm * 3/4" Male Solder 4 each L15*22 Capillary L22 Capillary T22 Capillary S22 Couplers Capillarity 8 each 3/4" Swing Check valve (Non Return Valve) Water Pressure Reducing Valve TP Valve The Retrofit installation is when the SOLO-85 is CONNECTED TO an existing electric geyser. The installation requires the RETROFIT installation kit. The SOLO-85 is used to pre-heat the water and this hot water from the SOLO-85 is used to feed the Existing Electric Geyser with hot water, so that the electric geyser is hot all the time and the electric element is not used. There are two types of scenarios where the Retrofit installation is done, but the installation and the installation kit are the same. This scenarios are as follows: 1.) The SOLO-85 is installed lower than the existing electric geyser. When the SOLO-85 is installed on the roof at a lower position than the electric geyser, the water in the electric geyser will circulate through the SOLO-85 and back into the electric geyser. This is a natural phenomenon called thermo-siphon. The natural rising of the hot water creates pressure in the loop and the water will circulate around between the two geysers.

8 2.) The SOLO-85 is installed higher than the existing electric geyser. When the SOLO-85 is installed on the roof at a higher position than the electric geyser, the water in the electric geyser will NOT circulate through the SOLO-85 and back into the electric geyser UNLESS USING THE TERMOSIPHONE VALVE. The benefit of the pre-feed is still applicable, however the electric geyser s element will heat the water for the first time in the electric geyser. As water is drawn off from the electric geyser the electric geyser will be fed with hot water from the SOLO-85. This does not apply at night time when there is no Sun. The RETRO installation comprises a SOLO-85 Geyser and a RETRO Installation Kit. Q & A What temperature can the SOLO85 handle? The Solo-85 Geyser has been tested between -20º for 24 hours and +85º Celsius for a period of 3000 hours and there were no problems. The T.P. Valve, (Safety Valve), will release steam from the geyser if the temperature is above 85º Celsius. Will the SOLO-85 Freeze in Cold weather conditions? The Solo-85 Geyser will not freeze or burst in very cold or sub-zero temperatures. Will the SOLO-85 Solar Water Geyser Loose temperature overnight? The Solo-85 Geyser will loose temperature overnight, how much depends on the ambient temperature and how long the night is as well as how strong the sun is the following day. Why is the SOLO-85 Solar Water Geyser not giving Hot Water? The Solo-85 Geyser may not be heating the water for a few reasons. 1.) There is no sun. 2.) The geyser is being shaded by trees. 3.) The geyser is not facing north. 4.) The geyser is not angled to the correct angle degrees. When does the SOLO-85 Solar Water Geyser need a frame? The Solo-85 Geyser needs a frame when it mounted to a wall, (when the roof is not north facing), or when the geyser is installed on a flat roof, or when the geyser is used for Manual feed. What water pressure can the SOLO-85 Solar Water Geyser withstand? The Solo-85 Geyser, if connected to a municipal water connection, can withstand a water pressure of NO MORE than 250 Kpa. A pressure reducing Valve is supplied with the various kits to reduce the municipal water pressure into the SOLO-85 to 250 Kpa. Failure to connect the municipal water connection through the PRV, will result in damage of the geyser.

9 Why is my HOT water pressure To LOW? Because the Solo-85 Geyser has a pressure reducing valve when connected to a municipal water connection, this reduces the pressure of the HOT water to 250 Kpa. If the COLD water pressure is higher than 400 Kpa, the two different pressures oppose each other. This may result in the cold water pressure pushing harder than the HOT water and therefore reduced pressure could result. The solution is to put a pressure reducing valve on the COLD water connection into the house that is set to 400 Kpa.
