1 CABIN DEVOTION GUIDEBOOK JUNE 27 JULY 1, 2016 Hebrews 1:1-2: Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 2 A NOTE FROM THE CAMP DIRECTOR Dear Chaperone, This Cabin Devotion Guidebook is designed to help you with one of the best parts of Fusion Camp, the nightly cabin devotions. After a full day of learning about how to listen and obey HIS Voice while having a great time at camp, you get to have one of the best times of the day quiet time with the campers FUSING together everything they have done at camp before they go to sleep. Please don t overlook this important time. After everyone is ready for bed, bring the cabin together for the devotions and prayer time. Since you will be paired with a second chaperone, work together to plan out a way that both of you are involved in this special time with the campers. Please read the devotions before leaving for camp so you can be prepared to present each one. The lessons in this book will help you review what the campers learned earlier in the day, provide fresh truths from God s WORD to help give another prospective on the day s primary points, and provide questions that can be asked to spark a great conversation between you and the campers. As you read the devotions, the text that is in bold are statements or questions that you can read to your campers during the devotion. Please feel free to expand on the ideas in these devotions to make them more personal to you and your campers. Most importantly have fun with the devotions and provide an opportunity for each camper to hear HIS Voice. Above all else, pray for God to do amazing things in the lives of these children. Don t forget to smile and communicate any needs or concerns to the Camp Staff so we can help make this the best camp experience ever. 3 MONDAY NIGHT CABIN DEVOTION LISTEN (1 Samuel 3:8-10) CHAPERONE PREVIEW: It s the first night of camp after a crazy day of travel, setting up the cabin, worship, and enjoying the Snack Shack experience for the first time. For many of your campers this is an exciting time, for others it could be a time of stress as they are away from their families and may not know everyone in the cabin. Every night during cabin devotions use the Opening Questions to get the campers used to participating in the conversation. The devotions are a great time for the campers to ask you questions about what they are learning it s not all about just giving information. Use the first part of tonight s cabin devotion to get to know the campers and to allow them to get to know each other. A game is included below, but you can use any activity to allow the campers to get to know each other better. The second half of the devotion will focus on God s perfect creation and how we are not perfect. Before starting the cabin devotion each night, make sure everyone has their Bible, is sitting together, and is ready to pay attention. It is a good idea to have the campers ready for lights out immediately following the cabin devotion. Have the campers turn to 1 Samuel 3:16 before getting started. OPENING QUESTIONS: Q: What was the best part of your first day of camp? Q: What surprised you the most about camp? Q: For those returning campers, what are you looking forward to doing again at camp? ICE BREAKER GAME: This week, we are going to be talking about a few different ways God chooses to speak to us, but before we begin we need to make sure we are going to be ready to listen. If God speaks to you this week (and He certainly will) would you be able to hear His voice? Let s play a game to work on our listening skills. (Line your campers up against a wall or bunk and play a simple game of Simon Says. Start by giving the kids easy instructions to follow and then gradually make them harder) How hard was it to listen carefully to my voice and then follow my instruction?

4 FUSION QUESTIONS: The same can be true when we are listening for God s voice. We can easily get distracted when God is trying to get our attention. The same thing happened to a young man named Samuel in the Old Testament. (Read the following text together) 1 Samuel 3:8-10 says A third time the LORD called, Samuel! And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, Here I am; you called me. Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, Speak LORD, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, Samuel! Samuel! Then Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. Q: Have you ever said those words to God before? Let s say them together. Speak Lord, your servant is listening. Q: Do you think God responded to Samuel s request? Q: If you said those words to God, do you think He will respond to you? Q Have any of you heard God s voice today? Let s pray these words to together tonight. Let s ask God to speak to us and promise Him that we will be listening for His Voice. Take prayer requests. 5 TUESDAY NIGHT CABIN DEVOTION HIS-STORY (2 Timothy 3:16-17) CHAPERONE PREVIEW: The title for today s Bible study was God speaks through His Word. The cabin devotion tonight will be a quick review of the Bible lesson from the morning and then move to the idea that we must follow the example that Jesus gave us. Remember to share with the campers how your story is a part of HIS Story. Have the campers turn to 2 Timothy 3:16-17 before getting started. OPENING QUESTIONS: Q: What was the best part of your day? Q: Anybody do something today that they had never done before? Q: What is something you learned today during Bible Time? ICE BREAKER GAME: Start off with a review of the Bible Lesson from today: In our Bible study earlier today, your Bible-Learning Leaders asked a great question. They said, Why should I listen and apply God s Word? It s so true. If we don t know God s Word, we won t know HIS VOICE. The Bible is much more than a history book. The Word of God (The Bible) is actually a book about His-Story. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Write the verse above on separate pieces of paper or on whiteboard that you bring from home. Have your campers recite the verse, then remove a word or phrase and have the campers repeat the verse. Continue until all the words have been removed and the kids are saying the verse from memory.

6 FUSION QUESTIONS: 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that all Scripture is God-breathed. Because we are talking about God s Word, that makes a big difference. Like we said yesterday, we better listen because these are important words. Sometimes His Word gives us a warning, sometimes it gives us a word of encouragement or a lesson in life. Many people see God s Word as a road map that tells us the way we should go or a guide-book that helps us become thoroughly equipped for every good work. Q: What do you think about the Word of God? Q: Has God s Word ever given you direction or encouragement? How? Q: How did Jesus use the Word of God to fight off the devil s temptations? Q: What s something new that you have learned from God s Word today? Let s pray together and thank God for His Word. Take prayer requests. NOTES AND PRAYER REQUESTS

7 WEDNESDAY NIGHT CABIN DEVOTION THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VOICE (John 10:27) CHAPERONE PREVIEW: The title of this morning s Bible study was God speaks through His Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible Learning Leaders focused on the Apostle Paul s experience on the Damascus Road. Everything about Paul changed on that day. His name changed. His job changed. His desires changed. We want the campers to see that Jesus is still changing lives today. Have the campers turn to John 10:27 before getting started. Campers were given an opportunity to respond to the Gospel in Chapel tonight and we would like to give them another opportunity to respond to Jesus during Cabin Devotions. Please be in prayer for this important night. You may also need to refer to the ABC s of salvation in the back of this guidebook. Tonight has the potential to be one of the most emotional nights of camp, both for the campers and for you. Ask the Lord to lead your conversations with the campers and be ready to answer questions. OPENING QUESTIONS: Q: What was your favorite part of the day? Q: What has been the best meal of camp so far? Q: We talked about sin tonight at Chapel, what is it and how does it impact us? If anyone in the cabin went forward during Chapel to receive Christ or rededicate themselves take some time to discuss that decision with the campers. FUSION QUESTIONS: Today, we ve heard a lot about Jesus. Through the words of Jesus in Scripture, we can hear God s heart and God s voice- and know what God is truly like. Q: Can anyone quote the key verse for the entire week? Hebrews 1:1-2: Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. Jesus doesn t just speak to a select group of individuals who can jump through the right spiritual hoops. He speaks to EVERYBODY. Kids in Africa, China, Germany and Ohio can all hear Jesus voice by reading the same Bible.

8 John 10:27 says My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. To a sheep, the voice of the shepherd is the most beautiful voice in the world. Isn t it cool how Jesus is compared to a Shepherd and we are compared to sheep. Q: Why do you think we are compared to sheep and Jesus to a Shepherd? Q: Why do you think the words of Jesus are written in red? Q: How can sheep know their shepherd s voice and follow him? They know Him. They know His voice. They belong to Him. They recognize Him by the sound of His voice. He is the one who will always lovingly lead them down the right path. Q: Do YOU know the voice of Jesus? Q: Have YOU heard the voice of Jesus calling YOUR name tonight? Getting a relationship with Jesus is as simple as A-B-C. A-Admit you are a sinner and that you can t be with God by just being good. You have to repent, or turn-away from the old sinful ways B-Believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died so we can be forgiven for our sin and C-Confess to someone else of your decision that Jesus is now in charge of your life. In Romans 10:9 the Bible tells us, If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Q: Would anyone here tonight like to follow Jesus? Let s pray together and thank God for His Word. Take prayer requests. NOTES AND PRAYER REQUESTS

9 THURSDAY NIGHT CABIN DEVOTION THAT STILL SMALL VOICE (1 CORINTHIANS 3:16) CHAPERONE PREVIEW: The title of this morning s Bible study was God speaks through the Holy Spirit. The Cabin Devotion tonight will be a quick review of that theme and the work and role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Have the campers turn to 1 Corinthians 3:16 before getting started. OPENING QUESTIONS: Q: What was the best part of camp this week? Q: What are you going to miss the most about camp? Q: How many of you have seen God do something awesome this week about you or one of your friends? Q: You learned about the Holy Spirit today in Bible, what did you discover? FUSION QUESTIONS: This morning we looked at a lot of verses that talked about the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus left His disciples, he said He was not going to leave them as orphans (someone with no hope and no family) Instead, He said in John 14:16-17 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. We are made in the image of God and when we confess Jesus and follow Him as our Lord and Savior, His Spirit comes to live within us. Q: Have you ever heard someone refer to that still small voice? As Christians, God speaks to our hearts; guiding us and helping us make the right decisions. When we are tempted, that same Spirit warns us and nudges us to do the right things. 1 Corinthians 3:16 says Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16)

10 Q: Has God s Spirit ever given you direction? How? Q: How important is prayer when communicating with God s Spirit? Why? Q: How can 10 people to hear the same sermon and yet walk away with a different application? Q: If we are God s Temple how should we treat our bodies? Q: What are some ways people treat their bodies poorly? Today in Bible Study your Bible Learning Leader talked about the Fruit of the Spirit. The Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Q: Which fruit sticks out the most to you? Q: Which one can you work on the most when you leave camp and go home? Pray together, asking the Spirit of God to guide you and teach you. Ask Him to help you grow closer to God this year. 11 SHARING THE GOSPEL WITH CAMPERS As a chaperone, you have the wonderful privilege of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with your campers. If a child has questions about what it means to be a Christian, we want you to feel comfortable communicating Biblical truth to them free from confusion. A simple way to share the Gospel is the ABC s of Salvation. Before sharing this Gospel presentation with a child, feel free to talk about your own experience in coming to faith in Christ. To get a good idea where the child is spiritually, ask them these questions: What s on your mind? What Bible verses/preaching have you been thinking about? What decision have you made, or are you making? Have you ever made a decision for Christ before? How do you think someone becomes a Christian? (Don t prompt them, let them tell you.) Would you mind if I told you what the Bible says about becoming a Christian? A - Admit Admit to God that you have sinned and disobeyed Him. The Bible says: Romans 3:23 All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death (everlasting punishment). No sin is allowed in Heaven and sin separates us from God

12 B - Believe Believe that Jesus was the Son of God and that He died on the cross and rose again. His blood was shed to pay for your sins. The Bible says: 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Because Jesus loves you so much, He took the punishment for you so that you can be forgiven and be with God in Heaven C - Confess Confess that Jesus Christ is your Savior and Lord. The Bible says: Romans 10:9-10, 13 Confess your faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. John 3:18 He who believes in Him (Jesus) is not condemned. When you trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you, God forgives you! You become His child, and He promises you a home in heaven forever! Put your trust in Jesus as your Savior from sin. Do it today, and begin following Him by obeying His Word, the Bible. After going through the ABC s of Salvation, ask the child if they would like to choose Jesus. If so, have the camper pray with you out loud with you. (Here is an example) Dear Heavenly Father, I ADMIT that I have sinned against You. Please forgive me of my sin and make me Your child. I BELIEVE Your Son Jesus died on the cross for my sins, was buried in a tomb and on the third day, rose again from the dead. I CONFESS my faith in Jesus Christ as my Savior. In His name I pray. Amen.
