5 Presentation Dear Colleagues, on behalf of the SOI Board, I wish to express our warmest welcome to the International Congress, an event that confirms and consolidates once again the commitment of the Società Oftalmologica Italiana (SOI) for the promotion of the visual wellness in Italy as well as the support and protection of the profession of ophthalmologists. It is a special edition, celebrating 10 years of cooperation and scientific exchange with the ophthalmologists from all over the world. A testimony of this is the 17 th SOI/OSN/AICCER Annual Meeting with a live surgery broadcast from the theatres of the Casa di Cura Igea, offered by Mr. Sandro Vergani: a two-day full immersion, from Friday 25 (8.00 am 6.00 pm) to Saturday 26 (8.00 am 1.00 pm). During Session 35, the traditional SOI Awards will be offered to: Stephen S. Lane, professor at the Minnesota University, for the Benedetto Strampelli SOI Medal Lecture entitled New Advances in Cataract and IOL Surgery Going from Good to Great by the Integration of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies; Josè Cunha-Vaz, Benedetto Strampelli SOI Medal Lecture entitled New Advances in Cataract and IOL Surgery Going from Good to Great by the Integration of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies; Josè Cunha-Vaz, professor at the Coimbra University, for the Gian Battista Bietti SOI Medal Lecture, entitled Diabetic Retinopathy. Clinical Phenotypes and Biomarkers of Progression; Bruce E. Spivey, President of the International Council of Ophthalmology for the SOI Honorary Award in Ophthalmology ; Sergio Bove, General Manger of Alcon Italia, for the SOI Award A life Spent Serving Ophthalmology. During Session 36, the Awarding Ceremony continues with the SOI Outstanding Humanitarian Service Award offered to Giorgio Paolo Coggi Berzetti for his activity of over 12 years spent taking care of needy people, together with Medici Volontari Italiani (Italian Volunteer Physicians). Last but not least, young Claudia Bruè will receive the SOI Mario Gelsomino Award, during Session 44 on Saturday morning. Comparing International experiences is the leit motiv of the Symposium carried out in cooperation with the American Academy of Ophthalmology on Guidelines (S. 19), during which the best clinical evidences will be shown, taking into account the risks and benefits of treatments and of diagnostic tests as well as the possible medical and legal implications. Ninety-six events, 36 of which are monothematic courses, 10 institutional courses and 47 sessions, together with encounters and meetings, through which the Scientific Society aims at tackling the several ophthalmological themes and expressing the issues of the whole sector. A total of 133 hours of professional updating, which provide 115,5 CME credits as well as 21 EACCME credits. Furthermore, the participants to the surgery sessions will have the opportunity to access the Distance Learning route Cataract Surgery free of charge, which enables to acquire 13 CME credits more. Over 27 Monothematic Societies have adhered to the 10 th edition of the SOI International Congress, certifying the importance of an event where the whole category of ophthalmological doctors meets. The congress route opens with the specialist session dedicated to endovitreal therapies (S. 1) in the Plenary Hall (Auditorium) from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and it closes with the Subspecialty Day dedicated to the annex therapies (S. 45) on Saturday in Sala Rossa 1 from 8.00am to 1.15pm. Every day, in 10 congress halls working simultaneously, the training sessions offer different theme routes at a fast pace: 23 May: Retina day, surgical retina, cornea and ocular surgery, neurophthalmology, genetics in ophthalmology, glaucoma, refractive and cataract surgery, orbit 24 May: Surgery and medical retina, uveitis, cornea and ocular surface, ipovision, pediatric ophthalmology, refractive surgery. 25 May: Refractive and cataract surgery live, cornea, instrumental diagnostics, uveitis, pediatric ophthalmology. 26 May: Refractive and cataract surgery live, orbit and ophthalmoplastic, ocular tumors, pediatric ophthalmology, cornea. The SOI Congress also deals with the relationship as well as the interaction with the operators in this field, through a large exhibition area displayed at Floor 1, that I encourage you to visit. Before taking leave, I am pleased to remind you one of the most important appointments of our association experience, i.e. the Members Assembly, taking place on Thursday 24 in the Plenary Hall (Auditorium) at 12.15pm. Lane Dr. Lane is past President of ASCRS. He has also been a Board Member and officer of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and a Board Member of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Lane has served on the American Academy of Ophthalmology s Committee of Secretaries as the Secretary for e-learning and e- Education.. He previously served as co-medical editor of EyeWorld and currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is on the Executive Committee of ASCRS and is also on the Board of the ASCRS Foundation. He is recognized in Who s Who in America, Who s Who in the World and was also named as one of the Nation s leading medical specialists in Best Doctors in America. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed his ophthalmology residency at Pennsylvania State University. Following completion of his residency training, a fellowship year was spent training in cornea and external disease, and refractive surgery at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Lane s expertise is in cornea/ external disease, anterior segment surgery and refractive surgery. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Lane is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota. He instructs and teaches courses, gives presentations and lectures extensively on cataract and refractive surgery both nationally and internationally. Dr. Lane is a visiting faculty member of ORBIS International. Dr. Lane is actively involved in clinical research having participated in over 50 national clinical trials investigating new products for cataract and refractive surgery. In 1993, the AAO presented Dr. Lane with the Honor Award for teaching contributions and in 2002 he received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement Award and Secretariat Award. In 2011 Dr. Lane was again honored by the AAO receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Lane has been invited to give more than 300 invited lectures nationally and internationally and has presented more than 15 named lectures including the Binkhorst Lecture. He has also participated as visiting professor on numerous occasions. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed ophthalmic papers and has written chapters for or served as co-author of 20 books. 9

Clinical Phenotypes and Biomarkers of Progression José Cunha-Vaz José Cunha-Vaz, M.D., Ph.D. is Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and President of the Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light and Image (AIBILI), a notfor- profit Clinical Research Organization. He is Chief Editor of Ophthalmologica and Coordinator of the Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinal Vascular Diseases Section of the European Vision Institute Clinical Research Network (EVICR.net). Dr. Cunha-Vaz moved in 1979 to the United States to become a fulltime Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Retina Service at the University of Illinois at Chicago until his final return in 1986 to Portugal. He was for many years Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Coimbra ( ) and President of Institute of Biomedical Research on Light and Image (IBILI) ( ). Dr. Cunha-Vaz s work has included laboratory and clinical research in retina and intraocular fluids with special emphasis on blood-retinal barriers and diabetic retinopathy. He was the first to describe the Blood-Retinal Barrier and initiated clinical vitreous fluorometry and multimodal macular mapping. He was PI for research grants funded by NIH (USA), FCT (Portugal), European Union Research Programmes and others. Dr. Cunha-Vaz has authored and co-authored over 450 peerreviewed papers and books. He was elected member of Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis in He is a founding member and General Secretary of the European Academy of Ophthalmology. He has received many awards such as the Helmholtz Gold Medal of the European Society of Ophthalmology, the Paul Henkind and the Alcon Research Institute Awards. He has been elected an honorary member of Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology, Spanish Society of Ophthalmology and Instituto Barraquer in Barcelona. Dr. Cunha-Vaz has received the Orders of Merit and Henry the Navigator from Portugal. 11

13 SOI Award "A Life Spent Serving Ophthalmology" 2012 SOI Award A Life Spent Serving Ophthalmology 2012 Sergio Bove Born in Salerno in 1960, married to Gemma with two daughters, Alessandra and Beatrice. After secondary school at the age of 19, moved to the United States where in 1983 he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from New York University. Based on his business studies, started his career in an American Multinational Company (American National Can) in Salerno dealing in metallic packaging, occupying positions of ever-increasing responsibility in Finance until After that, moved to Milan where he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Management at the Bocconi University. Married in 1987 and, in 1989, moved definitively to Milan, where he now lives with his family. Joined Alcon in 1990, where he started his career as Finance Director with responsibility for Finance, IT, Logistics, Personnel and Customer Service. At that time Alcon had a turnover of 6 million Euro and employed about 30 people. Over the five years he held this position the company doubled its turnover and number of employees. During this period he contributed to the creation of the back office organisation needed to sustain this fast development. Alcon Surgical Division was created in 1991; in June 1995 he was appointed to be its Director. Over the following four years in the position, he made a fundamental contribution to the growth of the sales and marketing organisation though ongoing development of the sales network, close relations with key opinion leaders and the development of specialized marketing. The launch of the Legacy Phaco Emulsifier, the Accurus Vitrectomy System, the Custom Pak as well as the Acrysof lens give a great contribution to the acceptance of Phaco and small incision as the preferred surgical techniques. Appointed General Manager of Alcon Italia in 1999, a position he still holds. With regard to the pharmaceutical market, the anti-glaucoma products Travatan, Duotrav and Azarga were launched and a second line of representatives was created for the promotion of non-glaucoma products such as Systane, Vigamox and Nevanac. In 2003 Alcon became the leading ophthalmic pharmaceutical company (in units) and in 2010 became market leader in glaucoma (in units). Confirmed in his position in June 2011, following the entry into the Novartis Group and the Alcon/Ciba Vision merger in June. Today Alcon Italia has a turnover of around 280 million Euro and employs 320 people. Characterized by strong sense of family and ethics - loves his work and dedicates most of his free time to his family, this year he will have his 25th wedding anniversary. Loves reading and watching good films and shares his family s passion for travel, taking every new opportunity to get to know new places and cultures. 13

In July 2004, she got a graduation summa cum laude and right of publication from G. D Annunzio Chieti-Pescara University where she received an MD degree. She did a residency in ophthalmology at University Polytechnic of Marche, Ancona in November From August 2008 and Dicember 2010 she performed a medical retina fellowship with Professor Lawrence Yannuzzi at Vitreous-Retina-Macula Consultants Office, New York, USA, and a surgical fellowship with Professor L. Chang at Columbia University, New York and an other one with Professor F.R. Spaide at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, New York. She attended as a co-investigator several international multicenter trials. She published more than 40 scientific publications in international journals and others are in print. She was a speaker in numerous national and international meetings. She worked for DARC (Digital angiography reading center) as a reader of color images of the fundus of the eye. She was a supporting contributor in the creation of the Opthalmicedge.org web-site. She was a recipient of prestigious awards: Best Poster in AMD (ASRS, August 28 September , Vancouver, Canada), Best Scientific Work 91 SOI National Congress (November , Milan, Italy). Up to date, she is registered at the third year of PHD at Neuroscience Department, Ophthalmic Unit, of University Polytechnic of Marche, Ancona, as retinal specialist following the teaching of Professor Alfonso Giovannini and Cesare Mariotti. Her clinical practice and scientific activity are principally focused on medical retina, surgical retina, electrophisiology and retinal imaging. She is a member of the following scientific societies: SOI, American Academy of Ophthalmology, GIVRE. 15

He resides in San Francisco. Dr Spivey served as the first EVP and CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of the American Academy of Ophthalmology ( ). He also served as CEO of: California Pacific Medical Center (where he was also Chief of Ophthalmology ); and, the California Healthcare System , all in San Francisco. Dr. Spivey then served as CEO of Northwestern Healthcare Network, a multi-hospital system in Chicago from , and from he was CEO of Columbia-Cornell Care in New York. Dr. Spivey has been President of the American Board of Medical Specialties and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies as well as the American Ophthalmological Society and the Society of Medical Administrators. He is a founder of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company and is a trustee/director 11 organizations including the International Council of Ophthalmology Foundation; the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology; and, Helen Keller International. SOI Outstanding Humanitarian Service Award 2012 Giorgio Paolo Coggi Berzetti Medici Volontari Italiani Dr. Giorgio Paolo Coggi Berzetti collaborates with MVI since Medici Volontari Italiani it s an international association which purpose is to give medical assistance to people in difficulty. His first expeditions in Africa begin when, during the reconstruction of Bukumbi Hospital in Tanzania, an ophthalmologic service with out-patients activities has been created. This service continues till 2007, when the hospital becomes district hospital. In that period, 5 missions are done; other 5 ophtalmologists take part of it to do 2000 visits and 350 operations. In 2006 starts the second project at Ambatondrazaka in Madagascar, where the religious order from Turin of Piccole Serve del Sacro Cuore has a dispensary. In that place a structure with a theatre, a sterilization room, an hospitalization room and out-patient has been built and the needed instruments have been provided. Moreover, an optics laboratory for construction and distribution of glasses has been added. The project has been realized in 2 years and it s still evolving with a progressive growth of the number and quality of services. The first two organizational missions had been followed by two missions per year. The mission s total amount is nine, 17 is the number of people that took part of them, 11 of them are ophtalmologists visits and 348 operations have been done till now. In the next summer and winter two missions more have been organized. Dr Giorgio Paolo Coggi Berzetti di Buronzo has participated in 1 mission in Madagascar, as well he will participate in the mission in the autumn of this year. 18

24 General Information Posters Computer Poster Session A station dedicated to the consultation of posters, equipped with two computers at congressmen s disposal, has been set up. Such a station can be found opposite to the main Congress entrance. Discussion Posters will be discussed during a dedicated session. Time allocated for the authors will will be 3 minutes. Surgery Survey Post The electronic post Cataract and Refractive Surgery Survey can be found next to the main Congress entrance. It is promoted by SOI and carried out thanks to Théa s contribution. The survey has the aim of creating an Italian data bank on surgical techniques, on the type of material used and pre/post operational management protocols. Ophthalmologists can participate in the survey by filling in the questionnaire on line, using only 5 minutes of their own time. Badge Upon registration at the Congress venue, all participants up to date with dues, will receive a badge with a personal photograph* which, if transferred to another person, will be declared void. Such a badge must be worn in a visible way. Access to the exhibition and conference areas is allowed exclusively through an electronic bar code check of the badge. Access to the Congress area is not allowed without a badge with photo. Any act referred to duplication of the badge will lead to automatic cancellation of the previous one and will be charged 50 Euros. Badges will be as follows Participants Staff E Exhibitors Board of Directors * Photo Station: should a Soi member receive a badge with no photo, he/she must go to the Photo Station. In order to regulate the requests of the professional congress organizers, an entrance fee of 1,000 Euros is set. The accredited person can enter the congress and exhibition areas, but cannot have any set permanent location, nor distribute promotional and/or advertising material. Such material can be distributed only after perusal and approval by the SOI Steering Board. The above-mentioned operators must present a written request for accreditation to the Secretariat at the Registration Desk in order to enter the Congress area. Accredited people will receive a non-transferable personal badge. Moreover, they will have to comply with all the safety regulations demanded to participants and exhibitors. Certificates of Attendance The certificates, only valid for fiscal purposes, are issued solely upon request of the interested person and only for those days in which the participant was actually present.. To request such a certificate, it is necessary to apply to the registration desk. 25 General Information INFORMATION FOR THE SPEAKERS An integrated software system for the automatic management of the Speakers Ready Room guarantees the simultaneous vision of the congress rooms on the screens placed in the whole congress area, including the Exhibition Area. Moreover, it is possible to visualize the speaker by handing in to the Speakers Ready Room a photograph in jpg format.. Speakers are requested to go to the Speakers Ready Room three hours before their presentation, otherwise their presentation is not included in the system All Congress rooms will be equipped with PC projection (1024x768 XGA resolution) as well as of a video projector only for DVDs. Slides or VHS projectors are not available. It is necessary to hand over to the technicians a copy of their work on CD, DVD or on USB memory stick. Their work can also be downloaded from their own PC The use of the speaker s own PC is allowed only for Courses in the following Rooms: RED 1 RED 2 BLU 1 BLU 2. Speakers are advised to make a copy on CD, DVD or on a USB memory stick of their presentation and to make sure with the technicians of the Speakers Ready Room that their own PC is compatible with the equipment of the Congress. Speakers are also requested to be in the Congress room 30 minutes before their presentation. All papers must be prepared with MS Power Point 2007 (Office 2007) program and *.pdf (Adobe Acrobat) files, suitable to be seen with a 1024x768 (XGA) resolution. All the Congress equipment stations (Speakers Ready Room and Congress room PCs) will be endowed with the updated version of OFFICE 2007 and the most widespread video codec: MPEG-2, DivX, Intel INDEO and Cinepak. The speakers using a video with a codec different from the one specified in this card are requested to bring, together with their presentation, the installation files of the codec used, to enable technicians to install them. This is the only procedure that can guarantee the vision of the videos in Power Point. For MAC users: if you wish to use a presentation made on MAC computers you have to present it to the Slide Centre for conversion. In case of videos or other conversion impediments your MAC can be connected to the projector in the conference room; you shall make sure you have the necessary VGA video adapter. It is not possible to project a film and a PC presentation at the same time, in as much as every Congress room will be equipped with only one projector alternatively used to project a film or a PC presentation. In Rooms equipped with double podium, speakers shall get ready on the second one a few minutes before the end of the ongoing speech; it is not allowed to start a presentation before the end of the previous one. 26 General Information The Meritorious Supporting Member fee includes the following benefits: an accident insurance policy (limited to the participation to the two annual Congresses) the policy which offers a contribution for the updating courses needed to retrieve the driving license penalty points specific legal protection in case of traffic accidents. In all the SOI Congresses, the Meritorious Supporting Members can collect their badge and congress bag at a dedicated desk. How to register at SOI The registration to the Association can be carried out on line by downloading the form from the web site or by requesting it at the SOI Secretariat by calling the telephone number Documents that need to be attached to the application form to register with the Italian Ophthalmological Society 1. Declaration of correspondence of the degree and professional qualification in Italy for foreign ophthalmologists. The Scholar of Ophthalmology must attach a personal curriculum. 3.
