The scene has changed from Smash A and B: now we have different children who are in a Reality School. This unit introduces all the characters and revises essential language. Allow students to spend some time talking about the characters in English, so they get familiar with them. Discuss how difficult it can be to live together with other children or people you do not know very well. Check homework from Welcome Unit. This reinforces the idea of the class being a group of people who care about each other on a personal level, rather than simply being there to learn a language. Set the writing task for homework. You could suggest to the class that they try to keep diaries in English perhaps just for a week, to start with. This would be for themselves, only, of course. Diaries can often help quite a lot both as regards language development and as a means of self-awareness. After they have written their reply, then they have to find the student who wrote the original letter. Explain that it s like a magazine that they can complete at home. Firstly, ask students what different things they can do. Then ask if any of them know any good jokes that they could tell in English. Perhaps you could tell a couple of simple jokes in English, too: eg. Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side. Ask the students to read their magazine article and then have a short class discussion about what they have read. Brainstorm with the class how many different places to live in they can think of. Write them up on the board. Encourage any students who wish to do that to report back to the class about what they did. Students do the test in class. They can use the paragraphs on p 70 of their SB as a model Initiate a class discussion about what jobs the students would like to do in the future and why. This type of activity enables students to carry out a more detailed analysis of the text and to achieve a greater understanding of what they are reading. 17 Lesson 2 33 Lesson 3 Initiate a class discussion about computers, finding out (discreetly) how many students either have got a computer at home or who are familiar with computers. For those who are not at all familiar with computers, it may be necessary to explain a few basic things to them. Students normally quite like some adverts and pay more attention to them than adults do, so it s a good opportunity to have a quick class survey of the most popular adverts of the moment! Make sure, though, that you get the students to analyse why a particular advert is more effective than the others.
