1 W E E K Student s book Methodology tips Workbook (set as homework, unless otherwise stated) 1 Welcome Unit Work through the Welcome unit. The scene has changed from Smash A and B: now we have different children who are in a Reality School. This unit introduces all the characters and revises essential language. Allow students to spend some time talking about the characters in English, so they get familiar with them. Welcome Unit Exs 1-8 Grammar Book (set as homework, unless time permits to do in class) Companion (set as homework, unless time permits to do in class) Welcome Unit (Explain to students that they should use the word list and focus box to help them learn new vocabulary.) Read the grammar explanation to students to cover any problems 2 Unit 1 Lesson 1 Talk a little bit about the concept of reality shows, since this is a reality school. Discuss how difficult it can be to live together with other children or people you do not know very well. Check homework from Welcome Unit. Unit 1 Lesson 1 Exs 1-8 (Ex 8 could be done orally in class) Unit 1 Lesson 1 Read the grammar theory in class from Welcome Unit Unit 1 Lesson 1 Unit 1 Lesson 2 This is a good opportunity to discuss important dates, like birthdays and name-days of the students in the class. It would be nice to create a Unit 1 Lesson 2 Exs 1-7 Unit 1 Lesson 2 Unit 1 Lesson 2 1
2 3 Unit 1 Lesson 3 wall chart with all the former written on them so that you can have a minicelebration in class whenever am important date occurs. This reinforces the idea of the class being a group of people who care about each other on a personal level, rather than simply being there to learn a language. Set the writing task for homework. You could suggest to the class that they try to keep diaries in English perhaps just for a week, to start with. This would be for themselves, only, of course. Diaries can often help quite a lot both as regards language development and as a means of self-awareness. Unit 1 Lesson 3 Exs 1-9 * Students can write their own problem letter, you take them all in, mix them up and then hand out a problem to each student. They then have to reply. After they have written their reply, then they have to find the student who wrote the original letter. Unit 1 Lesson 3 Unit 1 Lesson 3 Unit 1 Smash Get different students to read out the types of animals for the answers, and be prepared to have a bit of fun! Smash Recap Smash challenge 2

Explain that it s like a magazine that they can complete at home. Firstly, ask students what different things they can do. Then ask if any of them know any good jokes that they could tell in English. Perhaps you could tell a couple of simple jokes in English, too: eg. Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side. Unit 2 Lesson 1 Exs 1-9 (Ex 9 could be done orally in class) Unit 2 Lesson 1 Unit 2 Lesson 1 Unit 1 Lesson 2 This is a good opportunity to discuss sports and particularly, any sports Unit 2 Lesson 2 Exs 1-8 Unit 2 Lesson 2 Unit 2 Lesson 2 3

It s probably best to get the students to read the text silently to themselves, then each student can go at their own pace. Leave enough class time for the Chat corner activity. The writing task could be completed at home. Unit 2 Lesson 3 Exs 1-9 Unit 1 Lesson 3 Unit 1 Lesson 3 7 Unit 2 Smash There may be some students in the class who know a few magic tricks: ask them to explain or show them to the class. test on Unit 2. It is probable that some students may know the story of how the first Harry Potter book was written: ask the class to see if anyone can tell the rest of the students. The Writing task could be set as homework. Unit 5 Lesson 1 Exs 1-8 (Ex 8 could be done orally in class) Lesson 2 Unit 5 Lesson 1 Unit 5 Lesson 2 Unit 5 Lesson 1 Unit 5 Lesson 2 Unit 5 Lesson 3 Discuss ghost stories with the class: ask if they like them and see if anyone knows a ghost story off by heart to tell the class. This helps to keep their attention on the text. Again, an atlas would be useful for this lesson, so that students can identify the places and countries that are mentioned. This type of activity enables students to carry out a more detailed analysis of the text and to achieve a greater understanding of what they are reading. Students work on their own to complete the quiz. The Writing task could be set as homework. Ask your students if they can think of any other good mottos that might sum up their philosophy of life! Lesson 1 Lesson 1 Lesson 1 16
17 Lesson 2 33 Lesson 3 Initiate a class discussion about computers, finding out (discreetly) how many students either have got a computer at home or who are familiar with computers. For those who are not at all familiar with computers, it may be necessary to explain a few basic things to them.
