1 BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS In the educational setting

2 What are Bloodborne Pathogens Bloodborne pathogens are organisms that survive in bodily fluids particularly blood These organisms cause diseases that may lead to disabling medical conditions and..eventually DEATH. 2

3 Blood Borne Pathogens. Are Pathogens (Micro- Organisms) that are found in bodily secretions. Blood Semen Breast Milk Transmitted when infected blood comes into contact with another person s bodily fluid (Must have opening into body) 3

4 What Organisms? The Hepatitis B (HBV) Virus The Hepatitis C (HCV) Virus The HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) 4

5 What Disease? Hepatitis (both Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C) is an infection of the Liver Infection with HIV is related to AIDS (Auto Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) and affects the body s ability to fight infections Both of the above lead to long term disability and may eventually may cause death 5

6 Signs and Symptoms Hepatitis Fatigue Fever Loss of Appetite Jaundice (yellow skin) Urine Turns dark Abdominal pain Nausea HIV Fever Swollen Glands Loss of Appetite Night Sweats Diarrhea 6

7 How devastating are these illnesses? The number of 500,000 ANNUAL NEW 450,000 HEPATITIS B 400, ,000 INFECTIONS in the 300,000 USA is 500, , ,000 ANNUAL NEW HIV 150, ,000 infection rate is 50,000 40,000 0 HBV HIV New Infections/year 7

8 The HIV virus does not survive long outside the human body The HBV is much more hardy and can survive outside the human body for up to one week! Longevity? 8

9 Disease Transmission Bloodborne Diseases are spread by exchanging infected body fluids between persons with infection and persons without infection Bodily fluids that can contain bloodborne pathogens are: Blood Semen Breast Milk (tears, urine and saliva to a lesser extent) 9

10 What can employers do? Each employer is responsible for having and implementing an Employee Exposure Plan (EEP) The EEP will identify those individuals at risk for exposure to HBV, HCV, and HIV and offer appropriate preventative intervention Employees at risk need to be trained regarding workplace safety 10

11 BBP Training Includes Risk Factors Those job classifications at risk Prevention Including Personal Protective ti Equipment Including Preventative Vaccinations Knowledge of Universal Precautions Cleanup 11

12 What can employers do? Employers must make available to employees Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) PPE includes (but is not limited) to: Gloves Protective shoe covering Protective gowns Protective eyewear Protective devises for CPR 12

14 Universal Precautions Assumes that everyone has a bloodborne pathogen (Micro- organism) that can be spread to someone else.. Including YOURSELF!!! 14

15 The easiest way to stop the spread of Bloodborne Pathogens and other germs? WASH YOUR HANDS 15

16 Other ways to stop BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS Wear Gloves when dealing with potentially infectious situations Keep NON-Latex gloves handy Use Personal Protective Equipment according to your job classification 16

17 Keeping the work area clean OSHA suggests using an antiviral i agent when cleaning counters Check with the custodian at your school site for an approved cleanser 17

18 Proper Cleanup? The custodial staff at your worksite is considered an expert on BBP cleanup Use a proper disinfectant as soon as possible OSHA suggests a one part bleach : ten parts water solution for cleanup (1:10) 18

19 What If????? What if I am accidentally exposed to potentially contaminated bodily secretions? Wash with AntiViral cleanser (or soap and water) IMMEDIATELY! Contact your immediate supervisor for further care. It is part of the Employee Exposure Plan! 19

20 File the appropriate follow-up forms with the site supervisor Immediate access to medical services Immunization with HBV vaccination AfterCare 20
