2 How to Use These Books The Mini Tafseer Book Series is designed to help parents teach their children the Tafseer (exegesis) of the surahs (chapters of the Qur an) studied in Level B of the Ad-Duha Institute Islamic Studies & Arabic Program. Each surah has its own book that contains the following information: Special facts about the surah The Arabic verses of the surah The transliteration of each ayah (verse) to assist non-arabic speakers in correct pronunciation The translation of each ayah Simplified Tafseer for each ayah Highlighted vocabulary A one sentence summary of what the surah is about And a review section at the end of each book The content of this series is based on the Tafseer of Ibn Kathir and the Yusuf Ali translation of the Qur aan. May Allah bless you in your efforts to teach your child about the book of Allah. Quick Facts about Suratul-Fajr What is special about Suratul-Fajr? Suratul-Fajr is special because it teaches us about listening to Allah and doing what we are told. Allah reminds us in this surah of many people that have passed before us who were destroyed because they did not listen to Allah. What does Fajr mean? Fajr means early morning, or dawn. It is the time that we make the first prayer of the day. That prayer is also called Fajr. 2 3

3 What does Suratul-Fajr tell us about? Suratul-Fajr tells us about many things like: The importance of the Hajj and Eid Ul-Adha. If we listen to Allah we will go to Jannah. If we do not listen we will go to Jahannam. The Ad, Thamood, and Phirown all didn t listen to Allah. All those people and their cities were destroyed. Many people like being greedy, taking things from others, and keeping money for themselves. When something good happens to them, they think they are great even though they are really being tested. When something bad things happen, because of the bad things they have done to others, they blame Allah. 4 Now let s learn what Suratul-Fajr says 5

4 By the break of Day (Wal-fajr) In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. (Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem) This is the dawn when we make our first prayer of the day. We start Suratul-Fajr by remembering Allah. 6 By the Nights twice five; (Wa-lay-yaa-lin ashr) These are the ten days of Hajj (1 st 10 th of Dhul Hijjah). By the even and odd (contrasted); (Wash-shaf- ee wal-watr) The even is the day of Eid (10 th of Dhul-Hijjah). The odd is the day of Arafat (9 th of Dhul-Hijjah). 7

5 And by the Night when it passeth away; (Wal-lay-yaa-lee ee-thaa yasr) Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people), (A-lam ta-ra kay-fa fa- a-la rab-boo-ka bee- aad) The sunset time when we make Maghrib prayer. Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, (Ee-ra-ma thaa-til- ee-maad) Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? (Hal fee thaa-lee-ka qa-sa-moon lee-thee hijr) All of these times that Allah swears by are reminders of our duty to listen to Allah. Allah has given us things we must do, like praying, making Hajj, celebrating Eid, etc. We have to do our part if we want Allah to reward us with Jannah. The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? (Al-la-tee lam yookh-laq mith-loo-haa fil-bee-laad) And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley? (Wa-tha-moo-dal-la-thee-na jaa-boos-sakh-ra bil-waad) 8 9

6 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? (Wa-fir- aw-na thil-aw-taad) (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, (Al-la-thee-na ta-ghaw fil-bee-laad) And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). (Fa-ak-tha-roo fee-hal-fa-saad) All of these people (Thamood, Aad, and Phirown) did not do what Allah told them to do. Because of this, they were destroyed. Allah has left us some signs of how great these people were and how they were totally removed from the Earth after Allah decided to punish them. (See the activities section in the lesson manual for information about some of these remains.) 10 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: (Fa-sab-ba a-lay-him rab-boo-ka sow-ta a-thaab) For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. (In-na rab-ba-ka la-bil-mir-saad) 11

7 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honor and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), My Lord hath honoured me. (Fa-am-mal-in-saa-noo ee-thaa mab-ta-laa-hoo rab-boo-hoo fa-ak-ra-ma-hoo wana- aa-ma-hoo fa-ya-qoo-loo rab-bee ak-ra-man) Allah watches everything that we do. But Allah does not punish us right away because He is merciful. He lets us have time to ask for forgiveness for what we have done and to listen to His message. The Thamood, Aad and Phirown were all given time while Allah watched what they did But the time ran out and they still had not listened to Allah, so Allah gave each city its own terrible punishment to fit the crimes that they had done. When we get money or power we are supposed to do something good with it to help others, this is a test. It does not mean Allah loves us more than other people or that we are better than other people. If that were true then Phirown would have been a person that Allah loved very much (because he had such a tremendous kingdom) and the Prophets would be people that Allah did not like (because they were usually poor and suffered a lot). So having money and power does not mean that Allah loves you, it is just a test to see if you will be good or not. The people of Thamood, Aad and Phirown thought that because they had a lot of money, Allah loved them more than anyone else, this was not true! 12 13

8 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), My Lord hath humiliated me! (Wa-am-maa ee-thaa mab-ta-laa-hoo fa-qa-da-ra a-lay-hee riz-qa-hoo fa-ya-qooloo rab-bee a-haa-nun) Just like having a lot of money and power is a test, not having money and power is also a test. Allah wants to see if we will still listen and be good even if we are having a hard time. But the bad people who are tested like this say that Allah is being mean to them, that is not true! Allah is not being mean; Allah is testing them. If they are patient and good then they pass the test. 14 Nay, nay! but ye honor not the orphans! (Kal-laa bal-laa took-ree-moo-nal-ya-teem) Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor! (Wa-laa ta-had-doo-na a-laa ta- aamil-mis-keen) And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, (Wa-ta-koo-loo-nat-too-raa-tha ak-lal-lam-maa) And ye love wealth with inordinate love! (Wa-too-hib-boo-nal-maa-la hoob-bun jam-maa) 15 ~

9 They did not pass the test because they did not do the things Allah wants them to do. They did not 1. Take care of orphans. 2. Feed poor people or tell other people to do it. 3. Give people the money that they were supposed to get when a person died in their family. 4. Share their money with anyone. Nay! When the Earth is pounded to powder, (Kal-laa ee-thaa dook-ka-til-ar-doo dak-kan dak-kaa) And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, (Wa-jaa-a rab-boo-ka wal-ma-la-koo saf-fun saf-faa) And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? (Wa-jee-a yow-ma-ee-thin bee-ja-han-nam yow-ma-ee-thin ya-ta-thak-ka-rool-insaa-noo wa-an-naa la-hooth-thik-raa) ~ ~ 16 17

10 Allah tells us about three things that will happen on Yowmul-Qiyaamah 1. The Earth will be pounded to powder (mountains will be flat, earthquakes, etc.) 2. Allah will come with His angels to judge everyone. 3. Jahannam will be brought close so everyone will see it. Allah says that when these things happen Then the bad people will remember Allah. Then the bad people will be sorry for what they did..but then it will be too late. 18 He will say: Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life! (Ya-qoo-loo yaa lay-ta-nee qad-dum-too lee-ha-yaa-tee) The bad people will wish that they had done something good so that they could show it to Allah. The bad people will wish that Allah would not punish them for their bad deeds. 19

11 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, (Fa-yow-ma-ee-thin laa yoo- ath-thee-boo a-thaa-ba-hoo a-had) And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. (Wa-laa yoo-thee-qoo wa-thaa-qa-hoo a-had) (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! (Yaa ay-ya-too-han-naf-sool-moot-ma-in-na) Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! (Ir-jee- ee ee-la rab-bee-kee raa-dee-ya-tun mar-deey-yah) ~ Enter thou, then, among My devotees! (Fad-khoo-lee fee ee-baa-dee) Allah will give those people a terrible punishment This punishment will be worse than any punishment that anyone could give. And they will be tied in Jahannam so tightly, tighter than anyone could have tied them. 20 Yea, enter thou My Heaven! (Wad-khoo-lee jan-na-tee) 21

12 Suratul-Fajr Review But the good people who shared their money, fed the poor people, and gave everyone what belonged to them Allah will be happy with those people who listened to His message! They will have nothing to be scared about. Allah will tell them to come into Jannah! 1. What is Suratul-Fajr about? The people who have come before us had a lot of wealth or power, but they were destroyed because they did not listen to Allah. 2. Why are the Ad, Iram, and Thamood people mentioned in the Surah? These are groups of people who did not listen to Allah so they were destroyed. 3. What can we learn from this surah? Allah will punish people who do not listen to His message and treat others well. 4. What are some of the things that Allah tells us not to do in this Surah? Don t love money and don t take other peoples inheritance. 5. What are some of the things that Allah tells us to do in this Surah? Obey Allah and feed hungry people
