3 MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR To the Graduands of 2016: Congratulations! I am proud to join you on this extraordinary occasion and wish you well as you move forward as leaders in our global community. Convocation marks a day when the whole University turns its focus to its reason for being. This is a university where the next generation of leaders is born and where students from all walks of life can achieve their dreams. Every one of you has much to be proud of today and I encourage you to take great satisfaction in seeing the results of your hard work. You are the stars of the show; relish your accomplishments! Today we look to the future with great anticipation and optimism. The University of Winnipeg graduates have much to offer Canada and the world beyond our borders. Be persistent, pursue your goals, and know that you will have our continued support along the way. ROBERT SILVER, BSc (Hons) CHANCELLOR THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG 3
4 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It is my honour, on behalf of The University of Winnipeg community, to offer sincere congratulations to each of you on your achievements. Today we gather to celebrate your success and to pause and reflect on where you will go next whether you are launching a career, pursuing further studies, or taking off to explore the world you have reached an important milestone on your journey. This is also a time for us to recognize and value the support and encouragement you have received from professors, family, friends, and fellow students who have helped you realize your dreams. It was Rudyard Kipling who said He travels the fastest who travels alone. A wise person adds We who travel farthest, travel with others. UWinnipeg is located on Treaty One land in the heart of the Metis nation, and we are a richly diverse community. It is our underlying strength. We are deeply committed to reaching out to all students, including those who have traditionally faced barriers to participating in postsecondary education. I hope you have been enriched by the exposure to the many ideas and cultures and life experiences that flourish here. You are now members of the extended UWinnipeg family, joining more than 50,000 people who have passed through these doors as students. I am one of those graduates, and I attribute my academic and career successes to the solid foundation I received at UWinnipeg and the dedicated professors who inspired me to continue to strive and learn. It is our sincere hope that your time at UWinnipeg has allowed you to realize your unique talents as you move forward to create a difference in your community. On behalf of our faculty and staff, congratulations once again and please accept my best wishes for your adventures ahead. DR. ANNETTE TRIMBEE, BSc, MSc, PhD PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG 4
5 MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Dear Graduates, I am delighted to bring greetings on behalf of The University of Winnipeg Alumni Council and the more than 50,000 alumni we represent. Today, you officially join this illustrious group after years of hard work, dedication, coffee, sleepless nights, multitasking, sore eyes from staring at computer screens, sore fingers from typing your many papers and theses, fast food wrappers, hair loss, and missed parties. You are now among a group of graduates that includes world-renowned scientists, paradigm-shifting politicians, community-building activists, captivating entrepreneurs, teachers, artists, changers, leaders, doers, and makers. It has been my absolute pleasure to have been connected to this institution for nearly 20 consecutive years as a student, a volunteer, a staff member, then as Alumni Council member and president, and finally as an instructor. Needless to say, The University of Winnipeg has been enormously influential on my life and contributed greatly to the person I have become. If you are as lucky as I have been, your time here will have had as much of an impact on you. The Alumni Association and the Alumni Affairs office strive to keep the relationship between you and UWinnipeg alive and strong through coordinating engaging events, providing volunteer opportunities, and via ongoing communication about campus activities, news, and updates on the various successes of your peers. We strongly encourage you to show your pride in the institution by purchasing a UWinnipeg license plate if you have a car, buying a branded frame for your degree or diploma outside at the alumni booth, and keep connecting by following us on social media. You will also receive an alumni pin, which we hope you will wear with pride. When I was much younger, I learned something that has shaped my outlook on life and I will share it with you in the words of Leonardo da Vinci: It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things. All of you have the potential to happen to things. All of you have the potential to change the world for the better. Never forget that while few if any great things happen from the labour of one alone, every great invention, social movement, inspirational song, or great play on the soccer pitch started with one person. You can be that one person. Thank you all for your time and effort, thank you for your dedication to making yourself a more rounded and educated person, and thank you for choosing The University of Winnipeg. Congratulations to you all and I look forward to following the impact of the class of KEVIN FREEDMAN, BA, MSc PRESIDENT THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 5

Shepherd Memorial Scholarship (2015); the Dr. C. J. Robson Scholarship, Psychology (2014); and the Dean s Honour List-Student of Highest Distinction (several years in a row). Along with his academic work, Decter-Frain worked at the Public Interest Law Centre of Manitoba (PILC), which provided him another venue for intellectual growth. PILC is a government-initiated, independent, non-profit legal organization that takes a multidisciplinary approach to representing the public in cases deemed critical to public interest. While there, he worked on projects spanning the fields of biology, economics, law, and psychology. The experience taught him to synthesize problem-solving methods from multiple disciplines, and translate the results into clear policy recommendations, linked tightly to empirical evidence. Decter-Frain will continue to passionately delve into the areas of equality and social justice while pursuing his Masters of Inequalities and the Social Sciences at the prestigious London School of Economics, in the United Kingdom. This Spring Convocation is a family affair: Ari Decter-Frain s mother, Dr. Jennifer Frain, is receiving UWinnipeg s Distinguished Alumni Award. 53
54 Adam Bergman BBA (4 Year) VALEDICTORIAN As Adam Bergman graduates with his 4-year Bachelor of Business Administration degree, he is already taking what he learned in class and applying it in the real world with real people and real money, as he says. A double major in marketing and human resources to his credit, Bergman is employed at his friend s construction company, a small business that allows him to have a hand in everything. Bergman says that small class sizes and one-one-one relationships with professors in UWinnipeg s Faculty of Business and Economics were highlights of his educational experience. There is an open door feeling, where you can drop in and have a coffee. He also values the interdisciplinary approach to business that allowed him to take courses outside his majors, such as computer science and nutrition. Bergman is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, which supports and rewards top academic achievers. He has received numerous academic awards, including: Chancellor R.O.A. Hunter Scholarship in Business & Administration, Dean s Honour List-Student of Highest Distinction, Academic Proficiency Scholarship, Grace O Farrell Scholarship, Academic Proficiency Scholarship, R. Fletcher Argue Scholarships, The Robert Lothian Human Resources Award, and the Buhler Business and Administration Major Scholarship. Outside of class, Bergman is a drummer in a band and dedicated humanitarian. He has worked abroad in Africa and the Philippines, serving communities in need. Bergman is considering pursuing a Master s degree in the next several years, with a career goal that blends business and humanitarian work in the non-profit sector. His advice to fellow graduates is to continue building people networks, while staying connected with professors and staff in the business faculty. 54
55 HONOUREES (CONTINUED) Brenna Pomanski BSc (4 Year) VALEDICTORIAN Brenna Pomanski is graduating from UWinnipeg s Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health with a 4-year BSc in Athletic Therapy, having earned numerous awards for her committed academic performance. She was inspired to choose this field after experiencing and recovering from injury as a high school student athlete in volleyball, and credits her parents for setting a fine example of what hard work can achieve. Awarded a Special Entrance Scholarship from UWinnipeg upon her high school graduation in 2012, Pomanski was named to the Dean s Honour List and received an academic proficiency scholarship in each subsequent year of her studies. In 2015, Pomanski received the Dr. Henry Woltman Scholarship in Kinesiology and Applied Health, awarded by the Gupta Faculty to the most promising student entering the final year of the Kinesiology and Applied Health major. The previous year, she received the Chuck Badcock Scholarship in Athletic Therapy, which is provided to a deserving UWinnipeg athletic therapy student entering third year of studies. Pomanski is currently working in her home town of Selkirk, Manitoba, as a strength and conditioning specialist at a physiotherapy clinic. She also plans to pursue a master s program in physiotherapy, a next step she began to consider while completing clinical work for her UWinnipeg studies. She says a big highlight of her time in the program was practicum placements with sports teams, including the Selkirk Royals high school rugby team, the Interlake Thunder midget football team, and most recently, the Selkirk Steelers Jr. A Hockey Club. In addition to what she learned at UWinnipeg, Pomanski says she values the close, supportive relationships she formed with her peers and faculty members. 55

Trujillo ACADEMIC DRESS Academic dress originated in medieval times to provide warmth in the damp halls of learning. In its present form it includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders) and a cap or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive dress for each degree offered, which explains the variety seen in the academic procession. The University of Winnipeg academic dress conforms to the North American Intercollegiate Code. All graduates wear a black gown which varies according to the degree conferred. The bachelor s gown is worn closed in front and is distinguished by its pointed sleeves. The master s gown is designed to be worn either open or closed in front and has closed sleeves with an opening to free the hands. The front portion of the sleeve below the opening has a long semi-circular cut-out. Doctorate gowns also may be worn open or closed. They are faced with velvet. The edging colour on the hood indicates the faculty in which a degree is conferred: Graduate Studies red; Science gold; Education blue; Arts white; Business & Economics brown; Kinesiology - green. The width of edging is determined by the degree: three inches for doctors; two inches for masters and bachelors. Hoods are lined in red with a white chevron. Honorary doctors gowns are red in colour and are faced with white velvet. They are worn with red Tudor bonnets. The hood colour signifies the honorary degree: white for Laws; golden yellow for Science; admiralty blue for Letters; purple for Divinity. Hoods are lined in red and white The University of Winnipeg colours. Fellows wear a gown of blue with neither hat nor hood. Members of The University s senior administration wear gowns of varying colours. They do not wear hoods. 66
67 THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG COAT OF ARMS The Coat of Arms of The University of Winnipeg was officially adopted by the governing bodies of The University during the academic session of The elements found within the Coat of Arms have been associated over the years with both Manitoba and Wesley Colleges, the ancestors of United College. The bunch of grapes in the lower portion of the inner shield derives from the Coat of Arms of Manitoba College. The grape symbol has its origin in the College seal adopted in the charter of The cross, the lamp and the open book derive from the Coat of Arms of Wesley College, designed in 1897 by Dr. J.H. Riddell. The cross the symbol of sacrificial service in the interest of humanity was the basis for his design and upon it he placed a shield the symbol of protection. The lamp the symbol of light also represents learning, to which the Colleges have been devoted for over a century in the Province of Manitoba. The open book representing instruction in the way of life and the bringing of understanding to the student symbolizes knowledge in a general sense, although it may carry overtones of the Holy Scriptures in a more limited interpretation. The motto, placed upon a scroll below, is the United College motto, here retained: Lux et Veritas Floreant (Let Light and Truth Flourish). The words catch the central import of the lamp (light) and the open book (truth), and express the hope that both may flourish (as the grape) in our country (the cross). THE BANNER The banner, prominently displaying the Coat of Arms, was unveiled in The volunteer effort of Pat Corner, Fran Farquhar, Susan Ferguson and Sonya C. Wright took more than 1,000 hours. Over 400 meters of thread and 30 meters of wool material went into the project, using traditional techniques such as quilting, embroidery and crewel. 67
