2. Ensure that the InterWrite PRS voting receiver is plugged into the computer (either serial or USB connection).

1 Troubleshooting InterWrite PRS voting handsets A. Checking the voting setup in Easiteach v3.3 or Open Easiteach. 2. Ensure that the InterWrite PRS voting receiver is plugged into the computer (either serial or USB connection). 3. Click the 'voting button' on the extended Easiteach toolbar. 4. Click the Handsets button. 5. Click the Setup button. 6. Click on the entry for InterWrite PRS. 7. Click the Detect button. 8. Press any button on a handset while pointing it at the receiver. 9. The Handset ID, Button and Port information should appear on the screen. If the handset is not detected and information does not appear on screen, click Cancel, then Exit, and go to the next section "Checking different handsets up close to the receiver". If the handset is detected then the Handset ID, Button and Port information will appear in the boxes on screen. Click OK, then Apply, then Exit. 10. Click on the image of the voting tools on the right hand side of the Easiteach voting window and drag the tools onto the screen. 11. Click the green Start Voting button to open voting. 12. Using the same voting handset, press the 1A button while pointing the handset at the receiver. If you see the message "1 vote received" appear in the centre of the Easiteach Voting window, beneath Vote Now!, then it is working as expected. If the handset was detected (as in step 9 above), but no votes register, check that you have started voting. When voting has been started, the green button should change to red and the Easiteach Voting window says "Vote Now!" instead of "Voting closed". If no votes are detected even after voting is started, continue with the rest of this troubleshooting document.

2 B. Checking different handsets up close to the receiver 1. Try the "Checking the voting setup in Easiteach v3.3 or 3.4" with other handsets. 2. If other handsets do not work, hold them right up close to the receiver and try again. This is to see if distance from the receiver, the angle or other obstructions are the cause of the issue. 3. If Easiteach will not detect any handset right up next to the receiver, we need to check the software drivers. If you are connecting the InterWrite PRS receiver to the serial port on your computer, you do not need to install any drivers so please go to section titled "Testing the handsets in the InterWrite PRS software". If you are connecting the InterWrite PRS receiver to the USB port on your computer, you need software installed for the USB serial adapter so you should follow these instructions in the next section "Checking the installation of the Keyspan USB serial adapter software". C. Checking the installation of the Keyspan USB serial adapter software If you are using a USB serial adapter, so you can connect the receiver to a USB port on your computer, then the USB serial adapter software needs to be installed. How to install the Keyspan USB serial adapter You will need the Keyspan USB serial adapter software. If you do not have this on CD, you can download the high speed USB serial adapter for the USA-19HS from the Keyspan Web site: 1. Ensure you are logged on to the computer as a user with system administrator privileges. On a Community Connect 3 workstation, this would be a systemadmin user. On an RM Window Box, this is Manager. 2. Unplug the voting receiver from the computer. The receiver should not be plugged into the computer while the Keyspan software is installed. 3. Insert the Keyspan USB serial adapter CD into the CD drive of the computer. 4. If the CD does not run automatically, run Setup.exe. 5. If the software is installed, you will be given the option to Modify, Repair or Remove. Select Repair and click Next. Ensure that the receiver is unplugged from the computer and click OK.

3 6. If the software has not been installed, you will need to click on Install Software and then Install Keyspan USB Serial Adaptor Software. 7. You will be reminded about being logged on as an administrator, click Next. Click Yes to agree to the License Agreement. Click Yes to accept the default Destination folder. 8. Click Finish. Return to section A "Checking the voting setup in Easiteach v3.3" to see if installing or repairing the Keyspan software now allows Easiteach to detect the voting handsets. If Easiteach still does not detect the handset, continue to the next section "Testing the handsets in the InterWrite PRS software". How to install the Lindy USB serial adapter 1. Log on to the computer as a user with system administrator privileges. On a Community Connect 3 workstation, this would be a systemadmin user. On an RM Window Box, this is Manager. 2. Insert the Lindy CD into the CD drive. If you do not have a Lindy CD, you can download the drivers from listed as "Windows XP Drivers for the USB to Serial Converter Cable". 3. Plug the receiver into a USB port on the computer. 4. Follow the Found New Hardware Wizard that appears to install the drivers for the Prolific USBto-Serial Comm Port from the Lindy CD. 5. When asked if Windows can connect to Windows Update to search for software, select 'No, not this time' and click Next. 6. Click Next to allow the Wizard to install the software automatically. 7. If a prompt appears saying that the software has not passed Windows Logo testing, click on Continue Anyway. 8. Click Finish when the Wizard has finished installing the software for the Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port. D. Testing the handsets in the InterWrite PRS software To narrow down whether there is a hardware issue or a configuration issue, we need to see if the

4 handsets will work in the InterWrite PRS software. If you do not have the InterWrite PRS software installed follow these instructions to install it. How to install the InterWrite PRS software 1. Ensure you are logged on to the computer as a user with system administrator privileges. On a Community Connect 3 workstation, this would be a systemadmin user. On an RM Window Box, this is Manager. 2. Insert the InterWrite PRS CD into the CD drive. If you do not have an InterWrite PRS CD, you can download the software from and then Support, where you will need to register before you can download the software. 3. If the CD does not automatically run, double-click on the setup.exe file. If you have downloaded the software, double-click on this exe file. 4. At the Welcome screen, click Next. 5. If you accept the license agreement, click 'I accept...' and click Next. 6. Accept the default install location and click Next. 7. Click Install. 8. When the installation is complete, click Finish. How to configure the InterWrite PRS software The InterWrite PRS software needs to be told which COM port the receiver is connected to. 1. Open the PRS software, for example, Start, InterWrite PRS, PRS. If you get a message from Windows Firewall about Java, click Keep Blocking. 2. From the Connections Menu, select the COM port the PRS receiver is connected to. If you are unsure which COM port the receiver is connected to, you can just select one and see if it is the correct one when you run the Port Check next. 3. From the Connections menu, check one of the ports is selected and click Port Check. 4. Turn on a PRS handset by pressing the power button on the handset. You should see a green power light (LED) at the front of the handset. If the green power light is dim or does not come on, you should change the batteries. Each handset takes two AAA batteries.

5 5. Press any number button (not the arrowed H or L buttons) on the handset while pointing the handset directly at the receiver. 6. If the receiver is connected to the COM port you selected in the Connections Menu, then a Transmitter Identified message will appear in the black Port Check window. If the Port Check window remains blank, select another COM port in the Connection Menu and repeat the Port Check process. If after trying all the COM ports listed on the Connection Menu, the Port Check does not identify the transmitter, check that the transmitter is connected to the computer and that is shows a red power light.
