2 T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 2.6 THE BIBLE IS POWERFUL AND ACTIVE: LESSON OPENER (5 MINUTES) OPTION 1: INSIDE PICS Notes: WHAT YOU LL NEED: Images of X-rays or sonograms, computer, digital projector (optional) LEADER PREP: Search online for images of X-rays or sonograms. You or your family members may also have these images from a doctor. Print out images or prepare to display the images in club on a computer or large screen. ACTIVITY: STEP 1: Display X-rays and sonogram images to kids. As time permits, have kids try to identify different bones or organs in the pictures. STEP 2: Ask the kids: Why do doctors need X-rays? (Help kids see that X-rays and sonograms are used to see if certain parts of the inside of our bodies are healthy and strong or if there are any problems.) (Hold up your Bible.) Explain that just like an X-ray, the Bible shows us exactly what is in our hearts and minds! Christians often need to take a look inside to make sure that they are spiritually healthy and strong. STEP 3: Transition to the main lesson by saying in your own words, Let s see what the Bible can show us about what s inside ourselves today and how it can help us with any problems so we can be healthier spiritually, the way God wants us to be. STEP 4: Open in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you and the kids into God s truth through the lesson activities. 3 T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 2.6 THE BIBLE IS POWERFUL AND ACTIVE: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES) OPTION 1: GOD KNOWS WHAT YOU LL NEED: Seven Face Expressions (Resource Bundle), whiteboard or posterboard and appropriate markers, sticky notes, masking tape, Bible bookmarked to Hebrews 4:12, Bibles for kids LEADER PREP: Print the Seven Face Expressions from the Resource Bundle. Tape the seven faces on one wall of the classroom. Leave adequate space between each face on the wall so kids will not be too close to each other as they are attaching sticky notes during the activity. Write on a whiteboard or posterboard the words God knows ACTIVITY: STEP 1: Give each child a sticky note. Instruct kids to write their names on their sticky notes. Point out the facial expressions on the wall and have kids stick their names under the picture and number that closely resembles how they are feeling today. Call on a few kids to explain why they chose a particular expression. STEP 2: Explain that God already knew how the kids were feeling today. Discuss these key concepts: A. God knows and cares about what goes on inside us. He knows if we are sad or worried. He knows if we are happy. He knows if we are frustrated or angry. B. He knows even the secret thoughts in our heads that no one else knows. He knows what we think when our parents ask us to do something we don t want to do. He knows if there is sin in our heart, like disobedience, or a lie or not forgiving someone. C. When we read His Word we will be able to tell that God knows what we are thinking and feeling inside our hearts. attitudes of the heart. Thoughts and attitudes are the things you secretly want or want to do. STEP 5: Share that we can never hide from God when we read His Word, because He created us and He knows us better than we know ourselves. Have kids use Bibles to look up and read the following verses: Psalm 139:1-6, Psalm 139:7-12, Psalm 139:13-18, Luke 12:6-7. After each passage is read, ask: What does God know about us based on this passage? Have kids record the answers on the whiteboard or poster under the statement, God knows STEP 6: Discuss these key concepts: A. God knows EVERYTHING about us. He knows when we sit down and rise up. He knows every detail of our bodies because He formed them before we were born! He knows where we are at all times, and we can never hide from Him. He even knows the number of hairs on our heads! B. God told men what words to write in the Bible over 2,000 years ago, and those words were important for the people living back then. But God also knew that someday you would read those words, and they are just the words He wants to tell you today, and right now! C. When you read the Bible, God will help you see what s inside your heart, and if there is a problem, His Word is alive and active to help you with it, so you can make a good choice and be healthier spiritually. D. (Hold up your Bible.) God s Word can help us with EVERY situation we face. Notes: STEP 3: Read the memory verse, Hebrews 4:12, aloud from your Bible. Then read it a second time slowly, letting the kids repeat each phrase after you. Ask them what they think the verse means when it says the Bible is sharper than a sword. STEP 4: Explain that swords cut into things and allow us to see what s inside. The Bible doesn t cut us like a real sword does ouch, that would hurt! But the Bible is able to show us what s inside ourselves when we read it. 18 T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 2.6 THE BIBLE IS POWERFUL AND ACTIVE: LESSON OPENER (5 MINUTES) OPTION 2: SHARP AND POWERFUL Notes: WHAT YOU LL NEED: Plastic knife, tomatoes, apples, or other fruits and vegetables to cut open, video of a chef cutting vegetables or fruit, fruit that you precut with a sharp knife LEADER PREP: Set up items on a table in front of the classroom. STEP 2: Hold up the plastic knife and ask kids to predict the outcome of using that knife to cut an apple and a tomato. Cut apart a tomato or apple using a dull blade, such as a butter knife. Then show the video of the chef chopping vegetables or fruit with a sharp knife. Show the results of all the fruit and vegetables. Note the cleaner cuts of the sharper blade. STEP 3: Have kids identify the different parts of the tomato (the skin, flesh, juice, seeds) and the apple (the skin, flesh, core, seeds). Share these key concepts: A. A sharp knife helps us cut through to clearly see the inside of something. B. God s Word works in our hearts in a similar way. It doesn t actually cut into us like a knife, but you can imagine it invisibly cutting through to who we are on the inside to show our thoughts, feelings, and what we want everything about us. STEP 4: Open in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you and the kids into God s truth through the lesson activities. 19 T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 2.6 THE BIBLE IS POWERFUL AND ACTIVE: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES) OPTION 2: SITUATIONS AND BIBLE TRUTHS Notes: WHAT YOU LL NEED: 3 x 5 (8 x 13 cm) cards, container LEADER PREP: Think of common situations your kids might face (e.g., a bully who teases them, a younger sibling that annoys them, an older sibling who picks on them, a difficult homework assignment, a difficult time obeying parents). Think of Bible verses to share with kids that could help in these situations. Write five scenarios on 3 x 5 cards, one scenario per card, and place them in a container. STEP 1: Encourage kids to work in pairs or groups (samegender groups may be best due to the age of kids). Have each pair or group draw a scenario from the container. Give kids five minutes to prepare to act out the scenario by answering the following questions: What emotions might a child feel in that scenario? What Bible verse or Bible truth would help the child respond the way God wants in that situation? (Ask leaders to be prepared to offer Scripture verses or truths that apply to each scenario.) STEP 2: After pairs or groups have acted out their scenarios, read Hebrews 4:12 aloud. Discuss the verse together, emphasizing that God s Word discerns the thoughts and intentions of our hearts. Share these key concepts: A. God knows all things. He created us, and He knows EVERY situation we face. B. God knows and understands our thoughts and our inward responses to our outward circumstances. We cannot hide our thoughts or secret feelings from God. C. God s Word is powerful and gives us everything we need to handle the situations that we face in a way that pleases God. D.
