1 January 8 Big Picture Question: Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people. Christ Connection: The calling of Moses points to calling and rescue- the call of Jesus to come to earth to save God s people from their sin. Moses was Born and Called Pre-K/Kinder TEACHER BIBLE STUDY Moses was born into a rough world. The Israelites were so great in number that the king of Egypt forced them into hard labor. The Israelites were ordered to make bricks to build houses and cities. When that didn t work, Pharaoh instituted an unimaginable method of population control: kill all of the baby boys. Pharaoh was afraid the boys would become men who would rise up against him. Moses story is a clear picture of God s sovereignty. Not only was Moses life spared by the Egyptian princess, but also his mother nursed him. He even grew up in the house of Pharaoh. God also planned for Moses to spend years shepherding in Midian before He called him to his task. Imagine the encounter between God and Moses at the burning bush. God drew a curious Moses to Himself, and then He spoke to him: Moses, Moses! God identified Himself as the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob. He testified to His own grace: I have observed the misery of My people and I know about their sufferings. I am sending you so that you may lead My people, the Israelites, out of Egypt (Ex. 3:7-10). Perhaps God s greatest revelation to Moses was His name: I AM WHO I AM. The most basic and important fact about God is that He exists He always has and always will exist. He does not change. God revealed to Moses who He is so that Moses would trust in Him. Help the kids you teach understand that God saved Moses for a special purpose: to rescue His people. Emphasize that the calling of Moses points to a greater calling and rescue the call of Jesus to come to earth to save God s people from their sin. When kids better understand who God is, they can trust in Him.

2 THE BIBLE STORY Moses Was Born and Called Exodus 1:8 2:10,23-25; 3:1 4:20 Years after Joseph died, his family stayed in Egypt and the family grew. They were known as Israelites because they came from the family of Israel (Jacob). A new pharaoh or king came to power. He did not know about the great things Joseph had done for Egypt. The new king did not like the Israelites. There were so many of them! The king of Egypt was afraid; he was afraid the Israelites would fight against Egypt. He had to stop them. So the king made them work very hard. But the harder they worked, the bigger their families grew. The Egyptian king didn t know what to do! Kill all the baby boys! Pharaoh said. Let the girls live, but kill the boys! But the nurses who helped Israelite mommies have their babies did not obey the king. The king was even more angry. He commanded all the people, Throw every Hebrew baby boy into the Nile River! Then a special baby was born. His mother knew she was supposed to throw him into the river, but she hid him instead. For three months, she kept the baby hidden until he was too big to hide any longer. Then she put him in a basket and set it along the banks of the Nile. His older sister, Miriam, stayed nearby and watched the basket. Soon the pharaoh s daughter, the princess, went to the river to take a bath. She found the baby in the basket and felt sorry for him. Miriam offered to find a woman to take care of the baby. Miriam brought her mother. The princess paid Moses mother to care for him. She named the baby Moses because she drew him out of the water. Moses grew up as the princess s son, but he never forgot that he was born a Hebrew. He saw how the Hebrew people were poor and had to work very hard. Moses didn t have to work that hard. It wasn t fair. One day Moses saw an Egyptian hurting a Hebrew. Moses killed the Egyptian. Pharaoh found out and was angry, so Moses ran away. Moses ran to a place called Midian (MID ih uhn), where he took care of sheep for many years. The Israelite people in Egypt still had to work really hard, and they cried out to God. God heard their cries, and He planned to use Moses to answer their prayers. One day after the pharaoh had died, while Moses was with the sheep, he saw a burning bush. The Angel of the Lord was in the fire, and the bush was not burning up. How strange! Moses was curious and he went to look. Suddenly, God called from the bush, Moses, Moses! Moses replied, Here I am. God said, Take off your sandals. This is holy ground. I have seen how My people are suffering. I want you to lead them out of Egypt to a good land I have for them. First, lead them into the desert so they can worship Me. What if they ask for Your name? Moses asked. What should I tell them? I AM WHO I AM, God said. Tell them: I AM has sent me to you. God was saying that He exists, that He never changes, and that He lives forever. God warned that leading the people out of Egypt would not be easy. The king would say no. But God promised that the king of Egypt would one day let them go. Moses still wasn t sure. God gave Moses three miracles to perform to prove that God was with him. First, God turned Moses staff into a snake. Then He made Moses hand turn white with sickness and then be healed. Finally, God told Moses that if he poured water from the Nile onto the ground, it would turn into blood. Lord, Moses said, I am not good at speaking. Please, send someone else. God was angry with Moses for wanting someone else to go instead, but He agreed to send Moses brother, Aaron, with him. God s people cried out to Him, and He heard their prayers. God was sending Moses to save the day. Christ Connection: God saved Moses for a special purpose: to rescue His people. The calling of Moses points to a greater calling and rescue the call of Jesus to come to earth to save God s people from their sin. Moses and Jesus both obeyed God s commands in order to carry out His plan of salvation. Moses delivered God s people from physical captivity; Jesus delivered God s people from captivity to sin.

3 SUNDAY MORNING: Welcome & Free Play [9:45-10:15] Welcome parents and kids. Always greet each child at the door. Allow children to play with toys for the first part of class. NOTE: Be sure to engage the children in conversation and play. Begin forming relationships with each child. Clean Up & Snack [10:15-10:25] Have children clean up the play area and direct the kids to sit down at the table for snack. Children will have animal crackers and water. Before the kids eat, lead them in prayer or ask a child to pray for the snack. NOTE: Be sure give each child a hand wipe and have them clean their hands before and after snack. Engage Activity [10:25-10:40] Make the Burning Bush A large outline of the burning bush has been provided for you. Pass out pieces of yellow, red and orange tissue paper to the kids. Smear glue for the kids in the inside of the burning bush outline. Instruct the kids to put small pieces of tissue paper in the glue to make fire. (They might enjoy tearing the paper) Take the burning bush with you to use during large group time. Say: Have you ever seen a campfire? When you roast marshmallows or hot dogs over a campfire, what happens to the wood? (It burns up and turns black.) In today s Bible story, we will hear about a bush that was on fire, but didn t burn up. Think about why it might not have burned up. (God used it to attract Moses attention.) Transition to Large Group [10:40-10:45] Line the kids at the door and announce that it is time for the Bible story. Help the kids travel to the Large Group Room. NOTE: Please have assistant sit with the class on the floor to help with wigglers. Try to congregate them all in a compact area. Large Group & Worship [10:45-11:10]

4 LARGE GROUP [10:45-11:00] Worship- God s Perfect Words Mystery Bag (clue for our Bible Story today): (today s clue is the burning bush you created in class) Tape the picture of the burning bush for kids to see as you talk about the Bible story. Point to the Bible story and say that it comes from Exodus, the second book in the Bible. Say: In today s Bible story, we will hear about a great leader named Moses. We will hear about when he was a baby and later when he grew up. God saved Moses to rescue His people. In the story, God told Moses to take off his sandals because Moses was on holy ground. The ground was holy because God Himself was right there talking to Moses. Let s take off our shoes. You may hear some new words in today s Bible story. Do you remember the pharaoh for whom Joseph worked? [Show the timeline picture Joseph s Dreams Came True. ] The pharaoh was the king of Egypt. He was very powerful, and everyone had to do what he said. Some people who worked hard for him were called slaves. They could not go where they wanted to go or do what they wanted to do. God s people were slaves in Egypt. You will also hear different words for God s people. They were sometimes called Hebrews. Often they were called Israelites. Do you remember whose name was changed to Israel? (Jacob s name) The nation of God s people was named for him. Bible Story Video- Moses Was Born and Called Talk About the Bible Story Look at the Timeline and point to today s Bible Story. Ask: The pharaoh was afraid of the Israelites. What did he say to do to baby boys? (throw them into the Nile River). What did Moses s mother do to save him? (put him in a basket at the Nile River) Who found the baby and adopted him? (Pharaoh s daughter) When Moses ran away from Pharaoh, what work did he do? (took care of sheep in the wilderness) What unusual thing did Moses see and hear in the wilderness? (God speaking from a burning bush) [Indicate the bush picture.] What did God say His name was? (I AM WHO I AM) Say: God saved Moses when Moses was a baby. God spoke to Moses in the wilderness and gave him a job. Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people. Key Passage: You will know(point to head) that I am Yahweh(sign for God-hand moving down dividing face), who delivered(break chains) you from the forced labor(lashing a whip) of the Egyptians. 5 Sink In Activity [11:10-11:25] Sort Bag Pictures Pull out of a bag pictures of the following items or find items to represent them: basket, baby, stick (like a shepherd s staff), sheep, bush, sandals. Sort the items into two sets the Baby Moses part of the Bible story and the grown-up Moses part of the story. Talk about each item and how it fits the story. After all items are sorted, older kids can arrange them according to which came first in the story. (Moses mother, baby, basket, Pharaoh s daughter, sheep, bush, sandals, staff) Some things, such as the staff, could appear in the story in more than one position there could be more than one right answer. Say: Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people. Extra Activity A color sheet has been provided for kids to color that goes along with the Bible Story. You can also have kids work on memorizing their Key Passage as they work! Offer a reward sticker or stamp on their hand for anyone who can say the key passage without looking. **THE HANDOFF** As children are picked up, briefly state one of the things that were talked about in class today. You can do this by asking the child a question in front of their parent, or remind them of something they learned.
