Give thanks to the LORD on the harp; on the ten-stringed lyre offer praise. Sing to God a new song; skillfully play with joyful chant. PSALM 33:1 Music Ministry members serve the liturgy through music, adding life and energy to the action taking place and aiding the effective participation of the parish as a whole. Music Ministers must possess a dedication to attend rehearsals and scheduled liturgies, and be able to work with others as part of a team. Are you a person of faith and prayer, who desires to give glory to God through music? Do you wish to minister to St. James the Apostle Parish through music? A variety of roles within Music Ministry do require specific gifts, and each role is covered below. Cantor: From the Latin cantare (to sing), this noun has been applied to the person (1) who intones or begins certain chants; (2) who sings the verses of the psalm; (3) who leads the singing of the people. The role of the cantor is a leader of prayer, a leader who engages the assembly in sung prayer. It would be wise to remember that the singing is thus a doing and not a
7 feeling act. The cantor is a discreet servant enabling the assembly to express in song its own prayer. The qualifications of a cantor include a disciplined and controlled vocal instrument that has been practiced and prepared for the occasion at hand. The cantor should be, as much as possible, void of noticeable nervousness and uncertainty concerning the music of the day, and should be well-versed in the order of the liturgy or service for which they sing. Cantors rehearse on the 3 rd Thursday of the month at 6:30 P.M. Liturgical Choir: The Liturgical Choir supports the worshipping assembly on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at the 9:00 A.M. liturgy, September through May. It is also the main choir for the 10:30 P.M. Christmas Eve Mass and Holy Week celebrations. Aside from leading the assembly hymns and acclamations, the choir presents a wide range of musical repertoire of varying styles and difficulty. Rehearsals for the Liturgical Choir are in the church on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 P.M. and on Sunday mornings at 8:45 A.M. to prepare for Mass. Membership is open to all adults and high school teens who feel the call to serve God and this faith community through song, praise and prayer. Youth Ensemble: The Youth Ensemble consists of singers and instrumental musicians in grades 7-12 who lead the music at the 11:00 A.M. Mass on the 3rd Sunday of the month, with rehearsal immediately preceding the Mass. The group will learn music repertoire in a variety of styles, with emphasis on contemporary music. There will also be opportunities to begin training as cantors through a mentoring process and semi-regular cantor/solo assignments during liturgies as the year progresses. Funeral Choir: The Funeral Choir leads the music at parish funeral celebrations. Funerals usually take place in the mornings during the week or on Saturdays. Calls for funerals are normally a few days ahead of time and musicians are informed of the repertoire as soon as the family has made their selections often from a common repertory. Membership in the Liturgical Choir is not mandatory to participate in the Funeral Choir. Instrumentalist: There is a need for devoted instrumentalists to volunteer their time and talent in service of the liturgy at St. James. Instrumentalists are responsible for much of the unique sound that enhances liturgies. Instrumentalists can include rhythm section instruments such as guitar, bass, drums, and percussion as well as melody instruments such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, cello, trumpet, etc. A moderate to high level of proficiency is required in order to serve in this ministry, including the ability to read music and/or chord symbols. Music is planned 6-12 weeks ahead of time at St. James, so you will have an opportunity to see the music well in advance of any Mass for which you will be playing.
