2 1. READ AND FOLLOW ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS WARNING - To guard against injury, basic safety precautions should be observed, including the following: 2. DANGER To avoid possible electrical shock, special care should be taken since water is employed in the use of aquarium equipment. 3. Never attempt to repair this appliance yourself. Return the appliance to an authorized service facility for service or discard the appliance. Do not operate the appliance if it has a damaged cord or plug. If cord is damaged, the appliance should be destroyed. A. If the appliance falls into the water, DO NOT reach for it. First unplug the appliance and then retrieve it from the water. If electrical components of the appliance get wet, unplug it immediately and allow the appliance to thoroughly dry. Carefully examine the appliance after installation. It should not be plugged in if water is present on parts not intended to be wet. B. To avoid the possibility of the appliance plug getting wet, position the tank to the side of a wall mounted receptacle to prevent water from dripping onto the receptacle. A drip loop, should be arranged by the user for each cord connecting an aquarium device to the receptacle. The drip loop is the part of the cord below the level of the receptacle or the connector if an extension cord is in use, to prevent the water from travelling along the cord and coming into contact with the receptacle. If plug or receptacle gets wet, DO NOT unplug the cord. Disconnect the fuse or circuit breaker that supplies power to the receptacle then unplug the transformer and examine for the presence of water in the receptacle. 4. WARNING - This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. 5. Always unplug the appliance from the outlet when not in use, before putting on or taking off parts and before cleaning. Never yank the cord to pull the plug from the outlet. 6. Do not use this appliance for any purpose other than that recommended by the manufacturer. The use of attachments not recommended or sold by the appliance manufacturer may cause an unsafe condition. 7. Do not install or store the appliance where it will be exposed to weather or temperatures below freezing. 8. Make sure the appliance is mounted correctly and securely positioned on the aquarium before operating the appliance. 9. Read and observe all important safety notices on the appliance. 10. If an extension cord is necessary, a cord with the proper current (amps) rating should be used. A cord rated for fewer amps than the appliance rating may overheat. Care should be taken to arrange the cord so that it will not be tripped over or pulled. 11. This appliance is intended FOR INDOOR HOUSEHOLD USE ONLY. 12. This appliance is for use with saltwater only. Not for freshwater use. 13. (For North America only) This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). As a safety feature, this plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If the plug will still not fit fully into the outlet, contact a qualified electrician to inspect the outlet and make the needed alterations. 3 IMPORTANT DOS AND DON TS a. Before setting up, inspect your glass aquarium closely for any signs of damage that may have occurred during transport. Congratulations on your Biota Aquarium purchase! You have now entered the ocean realm and are one step closer to having a living ecosystem in your home, school or business! Please read the instructions that follow to maximize your new Biota Aquarium experience. 120 lbs b. Place the tank on a level surface capable of supporting 120lbs or more. A solid piece of furniture or a countertop are good options. The location must be stable and able to tolerate water or damp conditions. c. Avoid placing the tank in direct sunlight, for example near a window. Direct sunlight will cause temperature swings and algae growth, and stress your animals. d. Avoid drafts by placing away from direct heating and air conditioning vents. e. Do place the tank near an electrical source. f. Never use household cleaning products, including window cleaners or other chemicals on the tank glass or surrounding areas. g. If you have young children or large pets you should consider this in the placement of the aquarium. We strongly advise against any stressful impacts such as young children banging on the glass.

6 STAGE 2 Set up your aquarium For full video support: Optional item: Protein skimmer Step 1: Connect the flexible hose to the output of the pump, making sure to push the tubing all the way down onto the hose barb fitting (1). Next, place the other end of the flexible tubing over the hose barb on the elbow fitting. Make sure you carefully push the hose fitting over at least 3 of the hose barbs of the elbow to ensure a lasting connection (2). It is helpful to have the elbow facing to the left of the pump to align with the hole in the black filter wall (3). Carefully lower the pump into the back of the filter compartment of the aquarium as shown. Next, place the Y return nozzles through the filter wall hole and thread clockwise into the elbow fitting until hand tight (4). (1) (2) (3) Step 2: Rinse the carbon and BIOMAX media insert under cold tap water for 30 seconds while gently moving the media around with your fingers to ensure dust removal. If optional protein skimmer (2) is purchased, place heater (3) in pump compartment and protein skimmer into surface overflow compartment. 8 Step 4: Place aquarium in its final resting position, as we are now ready to begin filling with water as we prepare to make seawater. Carefully rinse out a pitcher or other water holding device to ensure no detergent residues are present as these are toxic to all marine life. The vessel should have never have been used for household cleaning with chemicals like bleach, etc. Begin to fill the aquarium with reverse osmosis/deionization (RO/DI) water, bottled water, or other filtered freshwater. If this is not available, water from a carbon filter, such as a refrigerator dispenser, can be used. If only tap water is available, this can be used on the initial set-up but is not encouraged due to excessive nutrients and chemical treatments such as chlorine or chloramines. The water conditioner/dechlorinator additive (1 cap full) included with your Biota Aquarium will make the tap water immediately safe to use. Slowly fill the tank halfway with filtered freshwater and add the two (2) included sea salt mix packets into the aquarium. Gently move your hands back and forth for several minutes and add the salt and the salt will dissolve and the water will begin to clear. Mix until salt crystals are almost fully dissolved. This process takes no longer than 5 minutes and it is normal for the water to remain slightly cloudy. (2) Sea salt (1) half way

9 Seawater can also be made in a clean bucket (if available) and then added to the Biota Aquarium. Next, the live sand (3) should be added to the aquarium. Don t worry about the tank becoming cloudy as this will clear up overnight. Use your hands to move the sand around so that it is evenly distributed so that the glass bottom of the aquarium is not visible through the sand. After adding the sand, proceed with filling up the aquarium until the water level in the pump compartment is 2-3 below the return elbow of the return nozzles. (4) (3) Live sand (4) Water level Tip: Aim the return nozzles so that one is directed just below the surface of the water across the front of the surface overflow while the other is directed downward towards the front of the aquarium. This keeps fish food from going into the surface overflow/filter before having a chance to slowly sink and also provides a visual movement of the surface water to easily monitor the pump water flow.

10 Step 5: Place the cover of the aquarium on first and run the electrical cord of the LED light through the cut out in the lid while placing the LED light into place. Next place the filter cover on while running both the LED light, pump, heater and optional skimmer cords through the appropriate cut outs. A strip plug/surge protector is recommended. Plug in the pump to the electrical outlet. The light can remain off until your fish arrive, at which time the timer will need to be programmed for an 8 hour period that meets your schedule. 11 STAGE 3 Request your live rock: biotaaquariums.com/register-product/ Please allow up to 14 days for live rock delivery once ordered. Live Rock Addition (after 48 hours of the tank being set up and running with live sand and seawater) When your live rock arrives remove the aquarium cover to carefully place it into the aquarium. Before doing so, you will need to remove 1 gallon of seawater from the aquarium to account for displacement and to prevent the aquarium from overflowing. To do this, decant water using a large clean pitcher or measuring cup into a bucket that has no soap or chemical residues. Using TWO hands place the live rock into the aquarium, making sure to position it in the middle (away from the sides of the glass). Do not allow the rock to make contact with the glass as this can cause permanent scratches to the aquarium. Once in place, add some of the seawater back to the aquarium so that the water level returns to 2 below the elbow in the pump compartment. ADD SLOWLY as it takes a moment to go through the overflow and reach its new water level. SAVE ANY SEAWATER FOR YOUR FIRST WATER CHANGE. You are now ready to initiate your fish and coral (if purchased) to be shipped overnight. Make sure someone will be home to receive the delivery of fish/corals so they can be safely added to the tank in a timely manner (within a couple of hours) and be kept from being exposed to harsh outside temperatures. Tip: Use caution not to drop the rock as this can break the bottom of the glass aquarium. Do not allow the rock to make contact with the glass as this can cause permanent scratches to the aquarium. When adding seawater back into the aquarium it is best to pour the water on top of the live rock to prevent stirring the sand.

12 STAGE 4 Request your fish: biotaaquariums.com/register-product/ Please allow up to 14 days for fish delivery once ordered. Fish and Coral Acclimation Acclimating Fish 1. Remove the filter cover and place the aquarium cover SIDEWAYS on the aquarium leaving enough open space to float the fish and coral (if purchased). Remove 1 gallon of seawater as described for live rock addition to account for displacement. Float the bags (with the fish/coral still inside) in the aquarium for 20 minutes, allowing the temperature of the bag water to acclimate to the tank water. Slide the aquarium cover up against the floating bags to hold them in place and keep them from obstructing the surface overflow during this process. Allow 40 minutes approximately

13 2. Carefully cut the top of each bag with scissors and add a small amount of seawater (~1/2 cup) to each bag. Rest open bags over the end of the aquarium and use the cover once again to keep them in place for 10 minutes. 3. After 10 minutes, add another small amount of seawater (~1/2 cup) to each bag. Rest open bags over the end of the aquarium and use the cover once again to keep them in place for more 10 minutes. 4. ADD from the bag as much of the water as possible into a pitcher or bucket while keeping the fish in the bag with your hand. The water the fish have been shipped in should not be added to the aquarium (if at all possible). It is normal for a small amount to enter the tank with the fish. As long as your hands are clean of any lotions, perfumes/cologne or other chemicals it is safe to touch the fish to gently place them in the aquarium. 5. Corals (if purchased) should be placed into the aquarium by hand. The green polyp leather is best placed under the light on the live rock by carefully finding a suitable crevice for the base to fit into so it will not fall down. The long polyp leather can go on the live rock or in the sand as long as it is receiving direct light. Other coral placement suggestions can be found on our website. 6. Fish can be fed with 1 measured scoop (included) after 6 hours of being acclimated or first thing the following day.

14 Care and cleaning Daily Feed fish one (1) measured spoon (included) in the morning after the lights have come on, and again in the evening before the lights go off. Check for any signs of pump malfunction by ensuring there is visible water circulation. Check thermometer to ensure optimal range (76-80 Fahrenheit, Celsius) is being maintained. Weekly Change 10% of the water with premixed saltwater or natural saltwater from Biota Aquariums. Clean the glass using the magnets (included) as needed (usually every 2-3 days) while being careful when near the bottom of the tank so that sand is not picked up and allowed between the magnet and the glass, which can cause the glass to get scratched. Periodically Clean Foam filter block and BIOMAX media insert once a month by rinsing it thoroughly with saltwater that has been removed for a water change. Replace BIOMAX media insert once a year. Replace Carbon media once a month. Replace Foam filter block once every 6 months. Clean foam sponge on pump intake at 3 months and at 6 months and EVERY month thereafter.
