2 3 types of Traffic Control devices These help guide and control the flow of traffic 1. Signs: These are placed on the sides of the road to inform the motorist. 2. Signals - usually placed at busy intersections to help keep traffic moving. 3. Pavement Markings: They mark where a motorist should be on the road.

3 Traffic Police Officer In heavy traffic or emergency situations without traffic control devices, there will be a police officer to control traffic. When there are no signals and no police officers, treat it as a 4 way stop sign.

4 2. TRAFFIC SIGNALS 1. Vertically When held vertically, the colors are red, yellow, and green, from top to bottom 2. Horizontally: The colors are red, yellow, and green from left to right when held horizontally.

6 Traffic Signals Red Light: Stop Yellow: Motorist has chance to stop safely Green: Proceed through intersection, yield to pedestrians still in intersection Green Arrow: Proceed only as shown in arrow, be cautious or pedestrians

7 Traffic Signals The Meaning of the colors: Green Arrow Proceed only as shown by the arrow. Flashing Yellow Light Slowly proceed with caution. Flashing Red Light Stop, yield to traffic and pedestrian, and go only when safe. Unlit Signal Treat it as a 4- way stop sign. Orange, Steady Raised-Palm Symbol Pedestrians must stop at the end of the sidewalk and must not enter the roadway when facing the light. White, Steady Pedestrian Silhouette/Countdown Pedestrian Sign with Steady Pedestrian Silhouette Pedestrians facing the signal may cross the roadway.

8 Traffic Signs (I) - Signs are divided into three basic categories Warning These signs warn motorists of hazards and dangers ahead that are difficult to see Guidance Guidance signs guide motorists to a destination by clearly identifying the route. Regulatory Signs that regulate traffic speed and movement are called regulatory signs. STOP, YIELD, DO NOT ENTER, etc.
