1 INTERNATIONAL STUDIES (INS) (INTERDISCIPLINARY MINOR) COORDINATOR PROFESSOR OF SOCIOLOGY AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES IAN TAPLIN The minor in International Studies consists of a total of eighteen hours, which must include INS 250 Seminar in International Studies, and fifteen additional hours of approved international courses. Of the fifteen additional hours, students must take three courses from the Global Thematic Studies category and two courses from the Regional Studies category. No more than six of the eighteen hours for the minor may be taken from a single discipline. INS 250 must be taken either in the fall or spring semester of the senior year and must follow completion of the aforementioned requirements. Students are also required to have completed an approved study abroad program in which a minimum of three credits are earned. 1. GLOBAL THEMATIC STUDIES: Three courses, preferably selected from two categories. a. cultural studies b. socio-economic studies c. geopolitical studies 2. REGIONAL STUDIES: Two courses, preferably selected from a single region. a. Africa d. Latin America b. Asia e. Middle East c. Europe The international studies minor is designed to prepare students to operate in an increasingly globalized world whose defining traits are a myriad of transnational challenges and opportunities. The minor exposes students to a variety of transregional themes, subjects and particular knowledge of specific regions. Study of a foreign language beyond the basic requirement is strongly recommended. The current list of approved courses is available in the Center for International Studies and on its website. Additional elective courses may have been approved since publication of this document. The program coordinator maintains a complete list of all approved elective courses. Seminar in International Studies Applies theoretical assumptions and methods to the analysis of international issues of contemporary relevance. (CD).
