Hoisting from bed to chair using the Care & Independence Sling Select the correct size of sling for the patient. (see sizing guide below and also attached to unit hoist) Care & Independence slings are new to the Trust and their measuring systems are as follows: Care & Independence Sling Measurement Using a soft tape in centimetres, measure: Height: Measure the clients overall height whilst they are lying flat. See diagram. Girth: Generally women have a larger hip girth, whilst men have a larger chest girth. Measure right around the hips on women, (generally in line with the bottom of a zip if they are wearing trousers) and right around the chest just under the armpits on men and children. Glove Sling Sizing Guide Using the table below identify the size of sling required Height cm Girth cm Care & Independence Sling Size cm cm cm cm cm 60-80cm 75 90cm cm cm cm If your client falls between 2 categories, i.e. height falls in a size 6 range and girth falls in a size 8 range, then the girth measurement must be used, so in this example a size 8 sling would be selected
When carrying out measurements for the sizing of a sling, ensure that the tape measure is pulled tightly around the patient. Once the correct size sling has been identified ensure all pre use checks (see checklist below) are completed Pre-use Checklist for Hoists and Slings Boom Spreader Bar Battery Mast Legs This check list must be completed by the user prior to each hoist use: Sling Ensure the correct size sling is used (see above or manufacturer guidelines) Check: Sling is clean Safe Working Load (SWL) Compatibility of sling used with hoist being used General wear and tear of sling Label is clear and easy to read
Hoist: Stitching is intact LOLER tag is present and in date. Check: Hoist is clean Safe Working Load (SWL) LOLER inspection label is in date Wheels move freely and are not loose Legs open and close fully Frame is without cracks Mast is stable Spreader bar is free moving and loop holders are intact Battery is charged Boom goes all the way up and all the way down Emergency stop system Emergency lowering system Remember brakes off at all times when hoisting Brakes on when using a standing hoist unless stated by manufacturer.(consult manufacturers instructions) Portable Hoist Standing Hoist A high pitched beep indicates the battery is low in charge If hoist is faulty, report faulty by calling remember to give serial number of hoist. Attach a do not use label to the hoist
When the correct size of sling has been chosen, place it under the patient by rolling them from side to side Place the leg straps under the Bring the ends of the straps patient s thigh. between the thighs and ensure they are flat and not twisted. Pass the small red loop on the left leg through the modesty loop on right leg strap. (colours of modesty loop vary with the size of sling) The longer leg straps are then passed through the small red leg loops and attached to the hoist using the red loop.
Attach the shoulder straps to the hoist using the side hook attachment on the hoist spreader bar. Lower the bed to an appropriate height and then raise the hoist to lift the patient clear of the bed. Manoeuvre the hoist away from the bed and position it in front of the chair. Open the legs of the hoist to enable it to go around the chair.
Position patient over the chair and lower ensuring that the patient s back is in contact with back of the chair. The chair may tilt backwards as the patient is lowered. If required, gently push the patient towards the back of the chair. Avoid pushing on joints, use the side of the sling instead. When patient is seated in the chair remove the straps from the hoist and manoeuvre the hoist away from the patient. Remove the sling from under the patient by unthreading the long leg loops from the short loops and the modesty loop. Turn the leg strap under itself and gently pull the sling leg pieces from under the patient s legs one at a time. The slide sheet fabric on the legs of the sling enables this to be completed with ease.
Encourage the patient to sit forward to enable the sling to be removed from behind them. Note:- There are no handles on these slings so that the carer can maintain eye contact with the patient at all times and avoid a compromised posture which occurs when pulling the back of the sling Positioning a patient When positioning a patient it is possible to recline the patient by the use of the different coloured loops on the leg. When positioned using the red loop (longest length) the patient will be held in upright seated position suitable for a patient to be placed in a chair. (see picture 1&2) (Picture 1) (Picture 2)
When using the orange loop (medium length) the patient will be slightly reclined allowing them to be positioned on a bed in a seated position. (see picture 3&4) (Picture 3) (Picture 4) When using the green loop (shortest length) the patient will be in a reclined position allowing them to be placed in a laying position on the bed. (see picture 5&6) (Picture 5) (Picture 6)
