4 Agenda Ethernet overview ENC624J600 overview and features Development Tools Applications ideas Conclusion 2009 Microchip Technology Incorporated. All Rights Reserved. ENC624J600 WebSeminar Slide 4 First, I will briefly present an introduction and overview of Ethernet and why it is a compelling consideration for embedded applications. 4
5 Most Widely Deployed Network Widely Understood Offices, homes, industrial buildings Huge existing infrastructure Interoperable Open standards Leverage existing protocols Leverage existing software Browsers, Clients, etc. Large support community Automated System Management Optional evolving protocols Why Ethernet Low Latency Real Time Remote Delivery 2009 Microchip Technology Incorporated. All Rights Reserved. ENC624J600 WebSeminar Slide 5 So why would you want to choose Ethernet? One major reason is that it is widely deployed. Ethernet can be found in offices, homes, and industrial buildings. It is used to connect devices across the desk or across the building. There is a huge existing Ethernet infrastructure already built, which means your Ethernet device can be easily added without the need to run custom cables or apply special configurations. So once the initial investment is made, minor additions are only minor cost adders, allowing scalability at minimal costs. Ethernet is also extremely interoperable. There are literally thousands of open standards build on Ethernet and its associated TCP/IP protocols. Your application can leverage this existing work, and take advantage of all the benefits. In many cases, this also allows you to only develop one side of an application. The user interface side is already provided in the form of a web browser, reader, or other piece of common software, which means you don t have to spend time developing custom applications or hardware drivers (although you certainly could if you desire). Finally, there s a large support community and field of experts, so you won t be alone during development. 5
6 Scalable Network Inexpensive equipment Automatic configuration Why Ethernet The Internet Same standards, same protocols Standards are called Request for Comments (RFC) Cross-Platform Windows, Mac, Linux, Easy Migration to Wireless WiFi is interoperable with Ethernet Same standards, same protocols Just replace the MAC/PHY layers Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for Security 2009 Microchip Technology Incorporated. All Rights Reserved. ENC624J600 WebSeminar Slide 6 Ethernet is widely deployed, and you ve seen how interoperable it is with other software. Let s look at some other benefits. Ethernet is also extremely scalable. Ethernet switches, routers, and cables are inexpensive, so new devices can be added quickly. Most networks can automatically assign addresses to devices, so there s little or no configuration to handle. And segments can reach as far as 100m without a repeating device. With routers or switches, they can stretch indefinitely. TCP/IP over Ethernet is also compatible with the Internet. Most of the actual data transfer has been abstracted above the Ethernet layer, so it s just as easy to communicate across the room as it is to communicate across the globe. The same standards and protocols are used, so you can go global with no changes to your application! To leverage these capabilities, you ll want to build with web standards. These are documented in proposals known as RFCs, and they describe how to transfer everything from an to a web page. You can integrate into these existing platforms quickly and easily, and your device will be accessible from any other compatible device. Plus, as mentioned, these interfaces run on any operating system: Mac, Windows, Linux, and even many phones and other mobile devices. You ve seen how widely deployed Ethernet is, and that it links easily to the Internet. Here s one last great benefit of Ethernet. If you build an application with Ethernet, migration to wireless will be greatly simplified. WiFi (the kind available in homes, offices, coffeeshops, and many other buildings worldwide) is built to conform to the standard. This standard is similar to Ethernet, and any data that can go over Ethernet could also be sent over WiFi. You can utilize the same standards and same protocols. All that must be done is to replace the MAC/PHY layer (the actual Ethernet cable interface) with a wireless one. 6
7 Agenda Ethernet overview ENC624J600 overview and features Development Tools Applications ideas Conclusion 2009 Microchip Technology Incorporated. All Rights Reserved. ENC624J600 WebSeminar Slide 7 Lets get started with a brief overview on ENC624J600 stand alone Ethernet controller. 7

ENC624J600 is a new stand alone Ethernet controller which is IEEE compliant, combines a 10/100Base-TX physical interface (PHY) and a Media Access Controller (MAC) with hardware cryptographic security engines, and can connect to any microcontroller via an industry-standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or a flexible parallel interface. 8

ENC624J600 WebSeminar Slide 9 While comparing with peers ENC624J600 Ethernet controllers combine a 10/100Base-TX physical interface (PHY) and a Media Access Controller (MAC) and can connect to any microcontroller via an industry-standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or a flexible parallel interface. The configurable, 24 Kbyte SRAM buffer memory provides a flexible, reliable data-management system that enables an efficient method for packet storage, retrieval and modification that reduces memory requirements for the host microcontroller. Many embedded applications require added security to ensure that only the intended users can gain access to monitor and control a remote network application. The ENC624J600 controllers integrate hardware cryptographic security engines that perform algorithm computations in support of cryptographic protocols such as SSL/TLS, SSH and various VPNs. These integrated hardware features enable secure data transmissions with reduced code size, faster connection establishment and throughput, and reduced firmware development efforts. Each ENC624J600 controller has a unique, factory preprogrammed Ethernet MAC address, which is required for every Ethernet device. This simplifies the design and manufacturing process by eliminating the cost of buying an Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI) from the IEEE, and the time required to perform serialized MAC address programming during manufacturing. 9
10 ENC624J600 Block Diagram 2009 Microchip Technology Incorporated. All Rights Reserved. ENC624J600 WebSeminar Slide 10 Referencing the block diagram: The device comes with an on-chip 100 Mbps Ethernet Physical Layer (PHY) and Medium Access Controller (MAC), providing reliable packet-data transmission/reception based on an industry-standard Ethernet protocol. The PHY contains analog circuitry to encode and decode the data on the twisted pair interface while the MAC contains digital circuitry to control when to transmit, handle automatic retransmission when a collision occurs, calculate and validate CRCs (Cyclical Redundancy Check), and do other necessary tasks. A total of 24 kilobytes of buffer is present on the device. The microcontroller can configure how much of the 24KB is allocated to the receive hardware. The unallocated space remains useful as a transmit buffer. The Buffer memory enables an efficient method for packet storage, retrieval and modification, eliminating memory requirements for the host microcontroller. This buffer memory provides a flexible, reliable data-management system. One of the quite unique features for this Ethernet controller is that it interfaces to the host MCU with either SPI or flexible parallel interfaces. ENC624J600 devices implement an optional SPI I/O port for applications where a parallel microcontroller interface is not available or is undesirable. An SPI port is commonly available on many microcontrollers. This makes the SPI port ideal for using ENC624J600 devices with the widest possible range of host controllers. ENC624J600 devices are also designed to interface directly with the parallel port available on many microcontrollers, including the Parallel Master Port (PMP) available on many Microchip PIC microcontrollers. The Parallel Slave Port interface is highly flexible, and can communicate using either Intel or Motorola formats for read and write control strobes. When the PSP interface is enabled, the ENC624J600 functions as a slave device on the parallel bus. The host controller must be configured to generate the destination or target address on the slave device, as well as the necessary port control signals. To reduce the processing requirements of the host controller, ENC624J600 devices incorporate different cryptographic security engines. These security engines perform the types of encryptions, decryptions and mathematical computations that are most commonly used for network security functions. They accelerate the computation of public/private key pair negotiations, message hash authentication and bulk data encryption. 10
