4 2014 Quick Hits Paralympic Sport Clubs at Year End 211 active clubs representing 48 states and Washington, D.C. Unique Participation Through the Paralympic Sport Club network, Paralympic sports were offered to 7,751 youth (18 and under) and 14,539 adults (19 and over). Of those participants, 3,279 veterans/injured service members participated. The total number of unique athletes engaged in programming was 22,290. In comparison to 2013 program participation, there was a one percent increase in the number of unique athletes served within the PSC network. Participant Information 68 percent of participants were male and 32 percent of participants were female. 15 percent of participants were veterans or injured service members. Impairment demographics ranked as follows: 42 percent other/les Autres, 19 percent spinal cord injury, 10 percent cerebral palsy, 9 percent TBI/stroke, 8 percent spina bifida, 6 percent amputee, 6 percent blind/visually Impaired, 0.3 percent dwarfism. In comparison to 2013 program participation there was very little change in demographics served within the PSC network. Department of Education Participation Twenty-one states integrated student athlete with physical impairment into high school and state meet program. Student athlete with impairment participation across the 21 states (These stats are collected from posted state meet results): o In 2013 there were 59 student athletes with a physical impairment competing at state meets. o In 2014 there were 102 student athletes with a physical impairment competing at state meets. o There was a 58 percent increase of participation at the high school level of student athletes with a physical impairment. Competitions There were 175 Paralympic sport competitions, with 24 of the 26 Paralympic sports contested Most competitions offered by PSCs featured wheelchair basketball, track and field, swimming, archery and wheelchair rugby. The majority of the competitions offered by PSCs in 2014 were local to regional competitions attracting athletes from neighboring states Ongoing Sport Programs There were 90,539 participants engaged in ongoing sports programs being offered by the PSCs. The top-three participated ongoing sport programs were: wheelchair basketball, alpine skiing, swimming, cycling and wheelchair rugby. Paralympic Sport Club Network 4

5 What is a Paralympic Sport Club? Since 2007, U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee, has partnered with community organizations from across the country to create a network of PSCs. PSCs are community-based programs developed to involve youth and adults with physical and visual impairments in sports and physical activity. All PSC programs and activities are based in the community and are run by a local organization. The local organization operating as a PSC could be a park and recreation department, non-profit organization, rehabilitation hospital, school system, college or university or other community-based organization that has the interest, expertise and resources to successfully plan and implement a program. With 21 million Americans with physical and visual impairments, including veterans and military personnel who have sustained serious injuries while on active duty, local Paralympic sport programming is an ever-increasing, important community need. The objectives of the Paralympic Sport Club Network include: Developing community-based sports clubs that recruit and involve youth and adults with physical and visual impairments in sports and physical activity Developing a comprehensive, community-based PSC network as a foundation for the Paralympic athlete pipeline Creating a national, unified, community-based PSC network that provides a grassroots branding campaign to educate Americans on the opportunities and benefits inherent in sport and physical activity as practiced by people with physical and visual impairments History and Growth of the Paralympic Sport Club Network 5

6 The PSC network launched in November Through partnerships with community-based organizations, the initial launch encompassed approximately 20 key markets throughout the country, followed by a nationwide roll-out. At the close of 2014, 211 active PSCs existed in 48 states and Washington, D.C. U.S. Paralympics is committed to working with community organizations across the U.S. to ensure PSCs are operating in strategic locations in all 50 states. Many of the PSCs are community based sport programs that were providing services in Paralympic sport before the launch of the program. 7 Gateway to Gold In 2014, USOC sponsors BP, Deloitte and The Hartford continued to work with the PSC network. Through the Gateway to Gold program, these sponsors aligned with U.S. Paralympics mission to identify more athletes with podium potential and provided local support for talent ID initiatives. By providing funding for PSCs to use in execution of sport-focused talent identification days and ongoing Paralympic sport programming, sponsors have continued to help U.S. Paralympics and the PSC network grow the number of Paralympic-eligible athletes competing in sport. Deloitte PSC Technical Assistance Grants Six PSCs received hundreds of consulting hours from Deloitte, a USOC sponsor, as part of the PSC Technical Assistance Program. Selected PSC applicants received strategic planning consultation with detailed modular strategic planning training sessions designed to promote organizational capacity and sustainability via training workshops with Deloitte consultants. In addition, Deloitte created development resources directly tied to the PSC Excellence Program, designed to educate sport administrators on program growth and sustainability. All resources are now housed on the PSC Resource Site, which is accessible by all PSCs. Under the guidance of Deloitte professionals, the program aims to improve PSC s organizational structure and operations, resource development capabilities and organization sustainment. This was the third year offering the program, bringing the total number of grantees to 31. PSC Excellence Program In August 2013, the PSC Excellence program was launched. The goal of the program is to enhance sustainable Paralympic sports programming by improving the organizational structures of PSCs and to increase their role in the growth and development of the Paralympic Movement in the U.S. Through participation in this program, PSCs can develop organizationally and programmatically, strengthen the U.S. Paralympic athlete pipeline, help develop skills within potential athletes and create program sustainability. Through 2014, the program has a total of 51 PSCs who have participated and met a designated level. Of those participating PSCs, 34 attained bronze level, 14 attained silver level and three attained gold level. For more information, click here. Coaching Education Scholarship In 2014, the PSC coach education scholarship was provided to PSCs to encourage coach certification in selected sports. Seventeen grants totaling $14,653 were awarded to active PSCs to attend a coaching education opportunity. 7

9 Coaching and Certification A majority of PSCs offered programming with certified coaches and/or instructors in a multitude of different sports, including coaches certified through NGB certification programs. In 2014, PSCs had a total of 4,769 certified coaches supporting ongoing programming for athletes. These coaches are trained program staff, contracted coaches or volunteer coaches within the program. Athletes grouped in the "other" category may have muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, major orthopedic impairments or neurological impairments not otherwise identified. Participation numbers count the number of athletes attending all scheduled activities (e.g., practices, clinics, camps, open play, etc.) to measure the activity level of each sport.
