1 MEMO To: Organists, Cantors, Choir, Guitar Group From: Stephen Adams, Director of Liturgy and Music Date: November 14, 2011 Re: Advent/Christmas Liturgy Sheets, Friends in Music Ministry: I hope this message finds you well rested and ready for an exciting liturgical year ahead. The revised prayers and music of the new translation of the Roman Missal will allow us all to slow down and take the time to understand and comprehend, I pray, the words of mystery we celebrate each week. I hope you have a fruitful experience from this new translation. Here are a few reminders: PLEASE READ BELOW! Do not assume you can go through a liturgy without the Presider s Book. Organists: I have had quite a few comments from Presiders and parishioners regarding dragging tempos. Please be consistent with tempos that are set during rehearsal. If you are unsure of a tempo, go over it with the cantor before Mass. There are noticeable differences each weekend. Organists: Your introductions should set the tempo for the rest of the piece. DO NOT RUSH through your introduction! Please do not slow down your introduction when you are ready for the Assembly/cantor to sing again, this confuses the tempo you are setting for everyone to sing at. Cantors: Listen to the organist s tempo. They are setting this for you. The organist sets the tempo, the cantor follows. If you are unsure of a tempo, or want to make sure you have the right tempo in mind, go over the tempos with your organist before Mass begins. Do not slow down the organist. GESTURES MUST BE LARGE USE BOTH HANDS TO SIGNAL Assembly it is time to sing. Some of you don t use gestures at all. Some of you use gestures that I can t see! Until further notice please stay at the cantor stand for the following musical moments: o At the beginning of Mass for the Sign of the Cross/Greeting chants o Gospel Acclamation (watch your volume at microphone; let the people sing!) o Presentation of Gifts if sung (watch volume; let people sing!) o Preface Dialogue ( The Lord be with you Lift up your hearts ) o Holy / Memorial Acclamation / Great Amen / Lamb of God o Communion Hymn (watch volume; let people sing!; don t walk away unless you hear people singing very loudly) o Dismissal chants / Closing Hymn (let people sing!) As always, thank you for all that you do and I appreciate your time and patience during this time of teaching and learning about the new translation of the Roman Missal. No, we will not implement it perfectly on the first weekend, it will be a learning experience for us all. However, I ask that we be positive and put our best efforts forward for all involved. And as always Thank you all for everything you do to bring amazing liturgies to our parish. You are the best!

12 Advent & Christmas Music 2011/2012 Alpha. Listing Remember that you will only need the music that is on for the weekends you are scheduled but it is advisable to pull all music in case of a switch in Masses. Music that is listed with a (BB) does not need to be pulled by cantors because it is your Breaking Bread 2012 hymnals. However, organists will need the accompanist version. Cantors should always sing the version from the worship booklet first. Advent uses a booklet. Christmas Season will use one this year too in light of the revised responses. Organists if you are missing a copy of a piece below that is not in the files at Holy Angels in the music room, please contact Amy as soon as you receive this document. Please do not wait until a few days before your scheduled weekend. Thank you!
