About us... Torfaen Mind works with hundreds of individuals and many organisations to provide completely confidential counselling services. The counselling provided is based on the needs of the individual to receive it. Therefore, we carry out assessments to initially understand the problem/s being experience and to find the most suitable approach. We are able to tailor our approach to the individual in the hope they respond and recover quickly. Our counsellors are governed by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy s guidelines and receive regular supervision. Why Torfaen Mind Torfaen Mind delivers an accessible, flexible and outcome based counselling service and has done for over 17 years. The team are professional in their approach and only use tried, tested and ethically accepted techniques to get the best results. The Service Counsellors offer support to people with a variety of problems. Depression and anxiety tend to be the lead presenting problems, however, other issues such as sexual abuse, domestic abuse, personality disorders, anger management, OCD, stress management, eating disorders, and childhood abuse and relationship difficulties will be supported The Counsellors use unique therapies such as the Rewind Technique and Emotional Freedom therapy for post-traumatic stress and phobias and are caring and supportive at all times. The assessment tool currently utilised is based on the Human Givens Emotional Needs Audit and has been adapted and updated in its 17 years of existence. 3
Private Counselling The Benefits There are many benefits to Counselling for the individual and the community. These include: Many people are more comfortable using a non-statutory service and so utilise a service they may otherwise not use Clients are able to develop tools and techniques to build confidence, self-esteem and resilience Clients will set goals with their Counsellor helping to give a person clear direction, purpose and meaning which helps lift depression Counselling helps reduce stress levels, reducing the likelihood of triggering a more serious mental health challenge such as OCD or Psychosis Clients develop better communication skills, leading to improved relationships with friends, family and colleagues Individuals can improve their quality of life as problems are dealt with rather than ignored Many of our clients return to work sooner than they otherwise would have Clients are able to gain control of their life by developing awareness of the triggers to their problems, using coping strategies to maintain good mental health Clients can be helped to see their own personal resources and strengths Counselling can improve the Mind and body connection and, as mental health improves, this often has a positive effect on the physical health The counselling relationship can often be the only positive relationship a client may have at the time 4
Therapy Options Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, (CBT) CBT is a therapy that aims to help you manage your problems by changing how you think, feel and act. CBT focuses on the problems and difficulties you have now, rather than issues from your past. It looks for practical ways you can improve your state of mind on a daily basis. Your therapist will help you find ways to change your thought patterns and behaviour so you can manage better any depression, anxieties or emotional distress. It is usual that this therapy works within 6-20 sessions. Human Givens Therapy Human Givens encompasses all effective approaches as an integrative approach to helping people recover a healthy emotional and physical wellbeing. It is holistic, scientific and practical and one of the more positive psychological models. It works in line with human nature by identifying that a person s wellbeing is good when a set of emotional needs are met, for example: safety and security, control, emotional connection to others, connection to the wider community, status, meaning and purpose, being physically and mentally stretched. If these needs are not met adequately, a person can become stressed, anxious and depressed. The therapist works with the client building a good rapport, entering their model of reality and getting emotional needs met in a practical and solution focused manner by identifying and utilising a client s strengths and qualities and teaching skills and techniques. Human Givens Therapy also incorporates a Fast Phobia and Trauma Rewind technique. 5
Therapy Options continued... Humanistic/Person Centred counselling This approach aims to provide an environment in which the client feels safe and not under threat of being judged. This enables clients to become more self accepting and reconnect with their own values and sense of self-worth. The counsellor or psychotherapist works to understand the client's experience, from the client's point of view, to positively regard and value the client as a person in all aspects of their life while being open and genuine. Integrative Therapy This approach recognises that each client is unique. The counsellor/therapist selects from a number of different counselling and psychotherapy approaches that is appropriate to the client s needs. Solution Focused Brief Therapy This is a positive psychological model which is time limited to 6-12 sessions. It focuses on and utilises a client s strengths and qualities, makes use of therapeutic questioning and builds on exceptions to when and where a problem does not occur as a means to seeking solutions. 6
Case Studies Client A: 21 year old unemployed female with a lot of bad childhood memories. She suffered from harmed and attempted suicide. Her traumatic memories were explored and linked to her present feelings to help rationalise her feelings of depression. She worked well with mindfulness and relaxation techniques combined with the Rewind technique. At the end of counselling her panic attacks had ceased her low moods had lifted and her stammer had stopped. She commented, Counselling has made me a lot more confident in myself and has helped me open up about my problems. I would recommend counselling to everyone. Client B: 42 year old female with a traumatic experience and a phobia of using lifts. The Counselor used the Rewind technique to help and following the session she went with the Counselor down from the 3 rd floor to the basement in the life. She did this with no problem and was relaxed and laughing (even though the lift door initially failed to open! ). Client C: 56 year old male who attended Counseling for several issues was shown and given literature on relaxation techniques. Of all the techniques he found that he used the 7/11 breathing the most and gave an example, i.e. He had attended his doctor s surgery for high blood pressure in the past. Merely sitting in the waiting room on previous occasions had caused a certain amount of anxiety and his tests had on these occasions registered as high blood pressure. Having been shown the 7/11 breathing on this occasion he practiced it whilst in the Dr s waiting room and his blood pressure test was normal. 7
Prices 1 hr Counselling session 30 Costs fully inclusive Please note the number of sessions required vary but we always assess counselling needs after 6 sessions to see if progress is being made. This assessment helps us to gage how many more sessions are likely to be required. For further information... Call us on: or Rebecca.griffiths@torfaenmind.co.uk 8

Relaxation technique Tight Fist Method You can also use this simple method (which derivations are from yoga) in order to relax. (This method is not suitable for anyone who has arthritis or any problems relating to their hands). Find a pace to comfortably settle yourself and then tighten your hands into fists (as tight as possible). Or interlock your fingers while clasping both hands together. Focus on your fists and tighten them even more, becoming aware of the pressure in your hands i.e. the whiteness of your knuckles, the feeling of your nails against your palm and feeling of rigidity in your wrists. Also notice this tension moving upwards from your wrists, elbows and shoulders. Focus on the physical sensations being produced while you continue to squeeze your fists. By closing your eyes too this will help with keeping focused. Keep focusing on these sensations then let your fingers and hands slowly unwind them noticing how the sensations are changing to a relaxed state. Keep your eyes closed while you feel the natural and enjoyable relaxed sensation radiating through your fingers, up your arms which replaces the rigid tension. This may take a number of experiences based on what is needed by the body warmth if you feel too cold, cold if you feel too warm or hot or even a tingly, or heavy pleasant sensation. Whatever experience is felt just allow the relaxing sensation to spread through your body. Remain focused on this calmness occurring throughout the body as the stresses fall away. Perhaps you can imagine the stress being drained away from your body through your toes, and it disappearing. Repeat this for as long as you like while you enjoy this pleasant calming sensations taking place throughout your body. You will find that your mind will relax at the same time. 10
Mind reframing Use this technique to change the way you think about things, helping reduce your stress levels and feelings of anxiety. I have to get this done I will do as much as I can in the time I have available I shouldn t have to ask for help Everyone asks for help now and again. I would be happy to help someone else I must do things well I will do the best I can with the experience I have Others cope so much better than I do Everyone is vulnerable to stress. I am not alone in this There is nothing I can do I will start doing some small things first I feel like I am cracking up I just need a break so I will take one I can t let anyone see how I am feeling There s everything to gain by talking to someone I must be a weak person suffering from stress like this Stress is just a response to pressure. What action can I take to reduce the pressure I feel at the moment? 11
