4 What is UEFI Ever since computers first came about and the introduction of microprocessors there was BIOS (Basic Input/Output System). At the start there was processors running in 16 bit mode, with RAM typically 1MB in size. As the amount of RAM increased in systems and the processors went from 32 bit to 64bit a new standard interface between Operating System and Hardware/Firmware was introduced called EFI (Extended Firmware Interface). EFI was different from BIOS as it offered a wider variety of functionality before the Operating System was loaded. It was modular and you could add custom code and drivers. It could be run on various platforms. Applications and drivers could be written in C and were more portable. EFI 1.10 was the first adopted version released for EFI in 2005 and it has gone on to be widely referred to as UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). Detailed information on UEFI can be found here What is Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool for UEFI Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool for UEFI (IPDT.UEFI) is a tool designed to validate the presence and functionality of Intel silicon in your Platform. IPDT.UEFI runs in the UEFI environment and hence can be used to validate your Intel Silicon prior to your platforms Operating System boot process. In order to run IPDT for UEFI on your platform you will need to create a bootable UEFI USB and put all IPDT.UEFI files on this USB. Note: For platforms with no video display that can boot IPDT UEFI USB, test results from running IPDT.UEFI will be generated via text files: SmbiosData.txt, pci_result.txt, nic_result.txt, isvt.txt, Summary<date.time>.txt and ipdt_result.txt. If platforms have a Piezo speaker, IPDT.UEFI tool will Beep once to indicate that IPDT.UEFI has started and Beep twice to indicate IPDT.UEFI has completed. Page 4 of 8

5 Hardware Software Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool for UEFI Requirements You will require: A Platform that supports UEFI A platform built using Intel Architecture (IA) A USB thumbdrive You will require: Intel Platform Diagnostic Tool for UEFI (IPDT_UEFI) Zip File 32bit or 64bit Download the latest IPDT.<Version.32b>.UEFI.zip and IPDT.<Version.64b>.UEFI.zip files here: Login Password intel ipdt321* Creating Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool for UEFI Bootable USB Step 1: Format USB Format your USB thumbdrive using Fat32 format. Step 2: Unzip IPDT_UEFI zip file to UEFI USB For UEFI x64 USB (64 bit) Unzip the contents of IPDT.<Version.64b>>UEFI.zip file to the root folder of your UEFI X64 USB thumbdrive. For UEFI x86 USB (32 bit) Unzip the contents of IPDT.<Version.32b>>UEFI.zip file to the root folder of your UEFI X86 USB thumbdrive. Page 5 of 8

6 How to Run Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool for UEFI Step 1: Insert IPDT UEFI USB into a USB port of your platform Ensure you use the correct IPDT UEFI USB. IPDT UEFI x64 USB will only boot platforms that use a 64 bit processor. IPDT UEFI x86 USB will only boot platforms that use a 32 bit processor. Step 2: Power on your platform Step 3: You may be required to select the IPDT UEFI USB as first boot device. If so, go to your BIOS setup or and select to boot from UEFI USB. Step 4: Platform will boot from IPDT UEFI USB and launch validation. Note: For platforms with no video display that can boot IPDT UEFI USB, test results from running IPDT.UEFI will be generated via text files: SmbiosData.txt, pci_result.txt, nic_result.txt, isvt.txt, Summary<date.time>.txt and ipdt_result.txt. 8 Optional Make USB UEFI Bootable using EFI Development Kit (EDK) If you wish to use the EFI Development Kit (EDK) to make a USB UEFI bootable. Step 1: Download EFI Development Kit (EDK) Download EDK here: Step 2: Make UEFI bootable USB Create UEFI x64 USB (64 bit) Note: A system with a 64bit processor will only boot using a UEFI x64 USB. Unzip the EFI Development Kit (EDK) zip file to a folder on your PC From the unzipped folder, copy the file EDK\Other\Maintained\Application\UefiShell\bin\x64\Shell_full.efi to your USB folder \efi\boot. Rename the file on your USB thumbdrive \EFI\BOOT\Shell_full.efi to \efi\boot\bootx64.efi Create UEFI x86 USB (32 bit) Note: A system with a 32bit processor will only boot using a UEFI x86 USB. Unzip the EFI Development Kit (EDK) zip file to a folder on your PC From the unzipped folder, copy the file EDK\Other\Maintained\Application\UefiShell\bin\ia32\Shell_full.efi to your USB folder \efi\boot.
