3 Your doctor has arranged for you to have a prostate ultrasound scan and prostate biopsies. Why do I need this test? 1. Raised PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen) This is a blood test that has been taken either by your GP or at the hospital. It relates specifically to the enzyme levels in your prostate gland. An elevation in this suggests that there may be an abnormality within your prostate gland, but does not distinguish the type of abnormality. 2. Irregular feeling prostate gland. The doctor will have examined your prostate gland by inserting a finger into your rectum. Feeling the gland in this way enables the doctor to detect any irregularities in the gland. 3. Other reasons. Occasionally a prostate ultrasound scan and prostate biopsy may be performed because of problems with infection. Before the test You need antibiotics prior to the procedure to guard against possible infection. If you have already been given a prescription for antibiotics, take them one hour before your biopsy appointment. If you have not been given any antibiotics, please attend the hospital one hour before your appointment time. This will allow time for you to take an antibiotic and for it to take effect before your biopsy. 3

4 How is the biopsy performed? The biopsy is a day case procedure. You may eat and drink normally before and after the procedure. You will be asked to change into a hospital gown prior to the procedure. During the procedure you will lie on your left-hand side on an examination couch. A probe will be inserted into your rectum. This may feel a little uncomfortable but should not be painful. The probe will then be gently rotated by the clinician to obtain varying views of your prostate gland. To take some small biopsies of the gland the clinician will use a guide to insert a needle alongside the probe. When sufficient samples of tissue have been taken the probe is removed. The tissue samples are then sent to the laboratory to be examined. Bladder Pubic bone Seminal vesicle Penis Prostate Rectum Biopsy gun Urethra Ultrasound probe Are there any side effects? It is normal to expect some minor bleeding after biopsy because the needle has entered areas that contain small veins. Blood in the 4

5 urine and with bowel movements may occur intermittently for a few days and possibly for a few weeks. Please drink plenty of fluids, approximately 2 litres in each 24 hour period (unless you have a prescribed fluid restriction) over the next 48 hours. You may also notice some blood in your semen. This is often brown in colour and may take several weeks to clear completely. If you wish to drive to/from your appointment you are advised to check with your insurance company if you are allowed to drive after a local anaesthetic procedure. Risks The three main risks of biopsy are severe bleeding, infection and inability to pass urine. These risks are rare, occurring in less than 1 in every 100 of patients. What happens next? The results take 5-7 days to process. We will then make plans to see you again and you will be contacted with an appointment in the outpatient department. 5
